Ok, just bought Wizardry VI , VII, and VIII.

Considering the oldest CRPG I've played is the IE engine games, how long would a first playthrough of each of these games take?

And being a novice to completely old school games, should I play Wizardry 8 first before diving into the really hardcore ones, VI and VII?

What version of 7 is that?

Probably both versions considering it is on steam. You should be able to choose which version to play when starting the game.

Also jdinatale while Wizardry VIII is definitely more accessible than VI and VII I'd still recommend starting with VI since VIII has a tendency to get repetitive with it's tedious battles while Wizardry VI' battles are incredibly satisfying throughout the whole game. On the other hand you definitely need to invest some time reading about stuff on the internet before starting out Wiz VI since you could really fuck up your party if you don't.

Should you start with Wiz VIII though at least download Wiz8Fast, it speeds up the battles greatly and is an absolute necessity in my opinion.

Man, I'd kill for a new Wizardry or Wizardrylike on PC :(
Did you try Generation Xth? Was damn good IMHO.

Who owns the rights to Wizardry in the event that anyone wanted to make Wizardry 9 or kickstart a reboot of the franchise?

It's owned by some Japanese company. Gamepot or something. They have released a few Japanese Wizardries (last one on PS3, it got localized even) over the past years and also Wizardry Online which sucks horribly.

Why would they ever do an MMORPG?
Only good thing is that it bankrupts them and forces them to sell to another company, who may make Wizardry games for the US.

Why haven't they made any DS Wizardry games? Free money with all the other RPGs on that system.

Renegen, Dark Spire is a DS game that has a really heavy Wizardry vibe. I've only played it a little, but it's quite good!

The DS has some Elminage games, which is basically Wizardry without the license made by the same company who does the JP Wizardry games.

I'm rolling up a party in Wizardry VII for the first time because I'm craving an adventurous blobber experience with pwetty gwaphics. How is this party setup?

Felpurr/Faerie Ninja
Felpurr Samurai
Mook Monk
Elf Alchemist
Human Bard
Faerie Mage

(I assembled this with help from the cluebook last night. Rolling the faerie ninja is a bitch.)
Also, how does the automap work in this game? I know there is a Mapping skill, but how does it affect the automap? And how is the map accessed (is it an item or part of the UI)?

The only character I would hate in your party is the faerie mage

You have to use the map making kit as an item. The more skill points you put into it, the more detailed the map will become.

HINT: The map making kit is pretty close to where you start, but it's easy to miss it at first.

Would skip the monk, make it a valkyrie instead (Although a monk would be fine too I guess). Would skip the alchemist, make it a true priest instead. Otherwise fine but don't put the faerie ninja in the front row. Also wouldn't advise having two faeries - tbh even the faerie ninja is only really useful if you are planning on importing your party to Wizardry 8 since you will find the best weapon for ninjas there, only usable by faeries.

You can pick it up Wizardry VII too. Faeries are still a decent race for ninjas regardless since they don't wear heavy armor.

Oh, alright, must have forgotten about this then. Thanks for correcting me :)

These Elminage games look kind of cool. Are any of them available in US versions?

Yeah, Elminage Original is on the PSP/Vita as a download only game. Its good but if you have a Vita I am liking Demon Gaze way more than Elminage. DG is the game I've been hoping for from the Etrian Odyssey series since #2 (and 7th Dragon)
