Valve's next project will probably be some kind of F2P MMO/ARPG. They've already seen how much cash they can rake in with microtransactions in TF2 and now DOTA2. What's more is they don't even have to design the stuff, just publish fan made designs and cut them in for like 30% or something trivially small.
