Hello Gabe,

My name is Barney Cumming, and I make a little indie game called Crawl which is currently on Early Access.

I am writing to ask permission to use your likeness in my video game.

I recently realized my silly fantasy of animating you as a powerful god in the game.

You can view a GIF here: http://imgur.com/w6HAVEH.gif

This ended up reposted by some games websites, so it seems only proper to ask for your permission.

If you find this low-res incarnation of yourself objectionable, I will of course not put him into the game.

I have a few points for your consideration before making a decision:

1- You will be the most powerful character in the game, effectively building a perception in Crawl players that you would be a formidable opponent in combat. This would surely reduce the desire to battle you among our players, barring edge cases in which the player is incredibly powerful himself and is looking for a worthy opponent.

2- The transformation implies your more recent bearded look is actually your Super Saiyan form (see http://dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Super_Saiyan) Once again, this inflated perception of your combat abilities (in this case having your power multiplied by 50) should serve as a deterrent to Dragon Ball fans who may also have planned to battle you, but who fear being annihilated by a Super Saiyan energy attack.

3- I will of course supply images of myself to enable your retaliatory usage of my likeness into your own video games.

4- I know the guy who made the art for Crossy Road, and I can ask him to put your favourite animal in the game, even if it’s a wolf!

5- Please.

If you’re still not convinced then of course I will respect your wishes, but please keep in mind any time spent battling your likeness in a game of Crawl, is time not spent making terrible jokes about Half Life 3.

If you see no problem with use of your likeness, do you have any requests for what you’d like him to do for his spawn or death animations? It seems only fair to let you choose

Thanks for your time

-Barney Cumming

Wow, GTA V broke Skyrim's record for most concurrent players on Steam (among non-Valve games).

Its peak for the release date is just over 300K players and Skyrim's record was almost 250K. And it may be way more successful given that while Skyrim is Steamworks only, every GTA V copy selling outside of Steam is not redeemable on Steam.

Maybe, like Bethesda did, they'll learn to respect PC more now.

Limited User Accounts
Note:

CD Keys, retail purchases, and gifts do not remove limited user restrictions. See How do I gain access to these features? below for more information.

Steam Support cannot remove this limited user status from your account.

Why can't I access certain Steam features?

We've chosen to limit access to these features as a means of protecting our customers from those who abuse Steam for purposes such as spamming and phishing. Read more...
How do I gain access to these features?

You will need to spend at least $5.00 USD within the Steam store.

Some examples of purchases that grant access to these features are:

  • Adding the equivalent of $5 USD or more to your Steam Wallet
  • Purchasing game(s) that are equal to $5 USD or more from the Steam store
  • Adding a Steam Wallet card to your Steam account
  • Purchasing a Steam gift from the Steam store (Receiving a Steam gift from a friend doesn't count)

Each Steam purchase total will be tracked in USD. If your Steam store's currency isn't in USD, it will be tracked and converted to USD automatically using daily exchange rates.

What features are unavailable to me?

Limited users are prevented from accessing several features on Steam, including but not limited to:
  • Sending friend invites
  • Opening group chat
  • Voting on Greenlight, Steam Reviews and Workshop items
  • Participating in the Steam Market
  • Posting frequently in the Steam Discussions
  • Gaining Steam Profile Levels and Trading Cards
  • Submitting content on the Steam Workshop
  • Posting in an item's Steam Workshop Discussions
  • Accessing the Steam Web API
  • Using browser and mobile chat

What will not grant me access to the above features?

The below actions will not remove limited user restrictions:
  • Activating a retail game on Steam
  • Playing free demos
  • Adding a non-Steam game as a shortcut
  • Adding/playing promotional trials like Free Weekends
  • Free to Play games (Examples: Alien Swarm, free versions of Portal and Team Fortress 2)
  • Activating promotional CD Keys from hardware or graphic card manufacturers

I received my game(s) as a gift, will I gain access to all features?

No, games that have been received as a gift or via Steam Trading are not eligible.

What if a purchase is refunded to my bank or my purchase is disputed/chargeback?

If a purchase amount is returned to your bank, the amount will be subtracted from your account's total purchase value. If the refund or dispute amount brings your account's total purchase value below $5 USD, then your account will lose access to these features.

For example, if you purchase a game for $5 USD, your account will gain access to these Community features. If you open a dispute with your bank, these funds will be returned to the bank and you will lose access to these features because Steam never received the funds.

What if a purchase is refunded to my Steam Wallet?

Refunds credited to your Steam Wallet, such as pre-order refunds, do not modify access to these Steam Community features.

What if my Steam store currency isn't in USD?

If the Steam store isn't in USD, we will track the purchase amount in USD by converting each purchase total made on Steam using daily exchange rates. Once you have made the equivalent of $5.00 USD or more in total Steam purchases, you will gain access to the restricted Steam features.

I think that the requirement is what changed. Previously, it was something like you had to spend money on the Steam store at least once a year, with no minimum dollar value.

I like how this indirectly fucks over DOTA 2 smurf accounts.

Any exemptions for ancient steam accounts? I don't often spend money on steam, but I've had my account since HL2.

Apparently while Gaben nefarious paid mod scheme may have failed due to those damn :argh: entitled gamers, he have a new evil scheme in hand.
Now people can ask Steam to ban anyone from opening their game in Steam.
The short version is that the new scheme allows publishers, game devs and the person in charge of their customer service the ability to ban paying customers from the Steam version of their games if they so damn pleased.
There is totally no way on Earth that this will not blow up in Gaben's face considering how some indie devs and certain infamous people in charge of customer service in certain games behaved.
I totally can't wait for the first person to ban someone from opening their game in Steam due to perceived slights and insults on social media.:troll:

Now, I wonder how do Bethesda staff feel about all those recent bad reviews on the Steam version of Skyrim.

The ban is for online/multiplayer games, they block the account you use to log into those. You only have to worry about your bad review for TESO. :M

http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/...were-at-pong-level-only-scratching-the-surfac

Valve's Chet Faliszek has been in the video game industry for a long time, and his writing has been instrumental for games like Half-life 2, Portal, and Left 4 Dead. Valve is now developing a virtual reality headset, and Faliszek was on hand at a VR-centric conference where he spoke about how the technology is coming along. He said, "None of us know what the hell we are doing. We're still just scratching the surface of VR. We still haven't found out what VR is, and that's fine. We've been making movies in pretty much the same way for 100 years, TV for 60 years and videogames for 40. VR has only really been [in development] for about a year, so we're at Pong level." One of the obstacles holding VR devices back right now is getting the hardware up to snuff. Faliszek says, "There's one thing you can't do and that's make people sick. It has to run at 90 frames per second. Any lower and people feel sick. Telling people they will be ok 'Once you get your VR legs' is a wholly wrong idea. If people need to get used to it then that's failure."

Pong level huh? Looking forward to play Half-Life VR in 2070. "Meanwhile enjoy our DOTA2 mods"
