it happens every time you load the game after getting the skill, monkeys get killed when they are caught stealing by armed guards, and the bug sometimes prevents you from learning the skill again, rendering you unable to get replacement.
then there was a bug with crew members sliding off of the ship and into the sunset on some islands, making them effectively unavailable (happened to me with that voodoo chick) plus several quest bugs.

it is bug-ridden, just not as bad as a troika, pre-ds3 obisian or one of the other pb games.

I agree, the year is two thousand and twelve. We get embedded scroll lists, it is an insult. Yes, we really need all that space to see how our character looks. It's not like we don't see him the entire game in third person view. Fucking consoles.

Goddamn this game is so crap. I'm simply not getting any enjoyment out of exploring Nicaragua because it's all so fucking samey, dull and half-empty (and button mashy). Hey, warthogs! Hey, claw monkeys! Hey, warthogs! Hey, claw monkeys! OMG A CRAB! Back to warthogs.

    what the fuck pb, himmelherrgott

Just finished it. It's less fun that Risen and less fun than Gothic 3. All in all it's not worth the full price - 20EUR tops.

If you don't enjoy it up to this point, I don't think it'll get any better for you. You might try out the Sword Coast, the next area, but that is pretty much the high point of Risen 2. The areas that come afterward are either much smaller (Antigua, DLC islands) or more linear in their exploration (Maracai Bay, which has many narrow passes with mountainous areas around them that you can't climb over).

Just prepare for the latter half being less good than the first half. The rather linear design of parts of Maracai Bay made me go "what the fuck were they thinking" because corridors aren't usually PB's style.

I think the publisher had more influence on this one.

I think it was probably one of those focus group situations where navigating the island without a map at first was too difficult for their precious selves, so they made the section you have to go through blind basically linear.

Or maybe they didn't want to fuck up the console port again so they decided on a less demanding level architecture from the start.

I still liked Tacarigua best, despite the corridors. It had a certain Monkey Island "do stuff until you get a ship and can leave the island" vibe to it.

Isn't this how it was in Risen 1? The monster variety seem about the same to me, though I'm restarting the game.

That stupid quest for Largo's clothing. For some reason if you don't challenge the guard with his bandanna, you can never get it apparently. Stupid!

Now that I checked how dodge works, I really feel condifent it was cut before release and just reintroduced now, it works too well to have been hastily developed right now...

That first half of Maracai Bay was as bad as Mass Effect planets.

Seems like I'm late to the party, but I finally bought Risen 1 and started playing it. Made it into the harbor city.

So far, it reminds me very much of Gothic 2, which is a very good thing. Wondering which course is gonna be more rewarding? Siding with the Inquisition, or with the bandits?

As for Risen 2: Seems like it's getting a lot of flack. Is it because of console popamolification, or due to rushed/bad content?

You can do the majority of the Bandit quests if you head to their camp before the city w/out joining them, so Inquisition probably has more gameplay. Sword + Shield is way better than staff for combat though.

Moreso for the latter, though I wouldn't call it rushed exactly. More like poorly thought out. There are some aspects of it that are dumbed down compared to previous PB games, to the game's overall detriment. I still find it pretty fun though.

Or you can side with mages, and be a mage with a sword.

Yeah the character specialization isn't the best in Risen. As far as who to side with it's pretty irrelevant after Act 1, maybe extending as far as midway through Act 2ish. You have to voluntarily join the Inquisition if you want to be a mage, though. Although, that just means you kill shit with ranged fire/ice/arcane bullets versus a bow or a sword. Everyone has use to scroll spells and they are plentiful.

Am I supposed to win that pistol from Henri via the shooting minigame? 8 hits out of 10? I'm luckly if I even hit once. FFS

Use the monkey. Turning the difficulty to easy also makes the shooting game a lot easier.

OK, the Maracai bay is very badly designed as an area (+ the lack of fast-travel location at Valdez' camp is ridiculous), but the quests there (voodoo path) are not bad. And the way the plot unfolded had me surprised.

I managed to find one treasure 'blindly', because the red "X" didn't display at all (even after I used the map) ;) The cunning potion now works, even though it has no icon.

Speaking of potions: I managed to create those for melee combat, cunning, and voodoo, after buying recipes from the women in Antigua and Blade Coast (eh, I don't know where I got the third one). Is there someone selling a stat-increase recipe in Caldera? Is there, in fact, a vendor for all the recipes?

Yip, but you can use fast-travel to the ship as a workaround for this bug.

Yeah, figured this out in the meantime, and wanted to go back to edit the post.. but you were faster ;) So, I only recently figured out the map has a "go back to ship" option. And I always used the fast-travel locations near the coast wondering why there are no locations on the ship...

edit: does the sugar supply you can buy in the tavern on Tacaringua replenish?

I´d guess so - read that it behaves like ammo (buy whole stock, re-open trade session and the stack is refilled)

Thanks. If it does, then the recipe for grog may be worth it.

What do you mean "blind"? Among the first items I have found in Maracai Bay was a treasure map which also gave me a map of the whole island. From all the talk about obtaining the map from the Inquisition boss later I have figured that it probably isn't a working as intended feature, but whatever.

I've run into a bug which has filled me with raeg. It's one of those that might just be enough to make me stop playing. This is in the MAIN QUEST; this makes me seriously doubt PB's current abilities as designers.
