Uukrul? Have you ever played Uukrul? The only real similarities are a focus on dungeon crawling, but then you may as well name Wizardry or something even older. And that's ignoring the fact that Dungeon Master came out in 1987, a good couple of years before Uukrul.

It did? I must admit to having played a pirated version without any manual, so who knows.

Dude. I saw dungeon crawling and mysterious runes on a wall and some basic puzzle being solved.

    Uukrul is completely different.
And as if being a Dungeon Master clone was a bad thing.

Recreating Black Crypt with this engine would be interesting. The dungeon layout should be easy enough to do with the editor, but then I don't think it supports any of the advanced features like invisible monsters, monsters that steal your weapons, underwater levels...

Saw this in yonder terrible forum:
16 hours to play through is a bit of a bummer, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut $12. Hopefully the encounter and dungeon design is varied enough to make replaying entertaining. What the fuck, I'm in for $12. If I can cough up $15 to the spirit of Wasteland 2 I can cough up $12 for this.

Game bought, code entered on Steam. Masturbating until the 11th. :bounce:
Edit: Although it did occur to me after buying it that since they're selling it through "Humble bundle store" it'll probably end up in a goddamn indie bundle at some point. Buuuuuuuuut what the hell. Guess I won't begrudge them $12 for making a modern blobber.

I have really, really high hopes for modding support here. Seeing how the devs seem to have their heads screwed on the right way, I think they'll recognize the potential in recreating all the goddamn blobbers on their engine. And fans would do all it for peanuts.

Where the hell is Skyway when I need him? I need somebody to tell me it's going to suck so that I wouldn't be so hyped.

Depends on what the toolset will be able to do. Creating new spells for example seems like a necessary feature.

    Uukrul 2 would be nice.

With somewhat better graphics (at least on Eye of beholder level) and somewhat less staggering puzzles.

    I can do that.

Why the fuck are you excited about a console port of an action game with stats?! You bash Diablo but immediately jizz your pants when indie devs make the same game but in 3D. LOL Codex hypocrisy at its best. Also, graphics suck because it needs to run on ipad that's why there's step-by-step movement.

Hope I could curb your enthusiasm somewhat.

    Auch von mir.

Now I see what you mean. This step-by-step stuff puts me off too.

It should have been more of a hybrid between Dungeon Master and Wizardry 8 combat, for me to be really excited.

Apart from that I don't find much to dislike. As it is it looks like a good DM clone with excellent graphics. But it had potential to be much more.

15 bucks is a fair investment for that, great excitement .. not.

LoG is a DM-like game for DM fans. People wanting it to be turn based or free movement or whatever isn't really different from derpshits invading Wasteland 2 forums to demand Fallout-like ot real time combat.

Wizardry 8 came out in 2001 and we get Wizardry-likes to this day. Weaboo ones mostly, that much is true, but still. When was the last time we had a RT blob with decent production values?

16 hours for a complete playthrough is rather disappointing. If a game is good, I like to get immersed in it for long periods of time over weeks or months. 16 hours seems very short when you consider it's a straight up dungeon crawl.

Oh well, I'm sure it will be enjoyable anyway. And no doubt they will release sequels with the engine. I don't imagine it would take long to map out new dungeons with an already complete engine.

16 hours is not much but dungeon master dont take much more to finish . The true problem is the lack of this kind of games released at all, id happily buy 5x this.Years of waiting, the long walk in the rpg desert and finally 16 meager hours of gameplay.

There aren't Wiz 8 clones unless you count Frayed Knights. However, there are a ton of Japanese Wizardry 1-5 clones for consoles. Most of the ones that we got in English are for portable consoles, specifically the Nintendo DS.

I wonder too - why developers stop making this kind of games?

p.s. Instead of waiting for years i advise you to play old classics. Same as i do.

Oh i played them all already and have an extrmely good memory , in fact its reading a review of dungeon master in my chess and strtegy game magazine that really threw me into rpgs, for some here it was wizardry , me i needed the breathtaking environments(for its time) and the perfect interface.I think games like this are not making enough money simple like that, altought it doesnt requires a big budget and a small team can do it.Its either 3D next gear of war like game , or nothing at all.Hope projects like this, wasteland 2 and age of decadence are very profitable to turn the tide.

My completion time was about 24 hours according to Steam, but I took my time and tried to find as many secrets as possible (kinda stopped near the end just because I wanted to finish it up, but I got probably 75% of them).

The game isn't super long and replay value is hampered in part by the fact that it's very heavily driven by puzzles, which all have the same solution each time. However, the developers have all but promised there will be a level editor and additional dungeons at some point in the future, both fan-made and official. When you take that into account $15 is more than acceptable in my opinion.

    Quick thoughts for now:
    • Puzzles are quite tricky. They're never completely obtuse or cryptic, though - if you're not succeeding it's because you're either missing something or looking at the problem the wrong way. They are often more timing-based than classic dungeon crawling puzzles, and take good advantage of the 3D engine, though there are still a lot of riddles to solve and switches to press. That said, more experienced players might have an easier time with this stuff than I did.
    • Combat is challenging, but only in groups. Most solo enemies can be tackled easily by luring them to open areas and then "circle-strafing" in a 2x2 pattern and attacking when you can. When you have to deal with 3+ enemies things get really tough really fast, and if you get cornered you can often kiss your ass goodbye.
    • Character system is decent but not really impressive. There aren't really any non-combat skills except for a few of the mage's spells - would have appreciated crafting, cooking, etc., although that might have only made sense in a bigger game. No lockpicking or trap-finding kinda sucks though.
    • Item variety is pretty good, and more importantly everything feels valuable. I kinda felt gypped by going with axes and maces and then not finding any particularly high-level ones (only swords) but at the same time, it means that when you find a new piece of gear it's usually significant. There are also a lot of single-use items like bombs that add a little strategy and risk/reward to combat.
I'm more just happy the game was made and is as good as it is. I have a feeling some people are going to really despise it because it doesn't really do anything too new beyond the technology, and it's arguably not as complex as its inspiration in a few ways, but judged on it's own it's still a very competent dungeon crawler, and quite a lot of fun regardless of a few flaws.
