To avoid me spamming the random JRPG news thread with random EO5 tidbits, I'm gonna paste EO5 updates here.

I only recently realised that gematsu have been making translated notes of all the EO news, so my speculative posts were moot. Still it's nice to know that a lot of my predictions were accurate.

Playlists of EO5 trailers:

Most of the details were gathered across gematsu and personacentral articles (source, source):

Class Stuff

Class Changing System:
Characters can change classes after completing a “Map Drawing Mission” (sounds like the tutorial mission?) Changing a class will drop you by 5 levels and you will keep your stats and portrait. The big thing about class changing though is that it will allow races to use classes that they normally cannot use.

Masters & Titles:
After meeting certain conditions an adventure will be aknowledged as a master, which will allow them to select from two titles that are advanced skill tress for their class. I'll detail each title skill tree within their respective class skills section below.

Racial skills:
Earthrun (humans):
Fishing – Makes it possible to fish at the fishing spots within the forest.
Taijutsu – A skill that increases resistance with regard to each of your seals.

Lunaria (elves):
Magical Perception – Detects if there are those that can use magic nearby. It further increases INT by a small amount.
Magical Endowment – A skill that increases the damage of battle-use attack items. It further increases LUC by a small amount.

Therian (beastmen):
Hunting Art – Makes it possible to obtain edible beasts in the forest. It further increases STR by a small amount.
Vigilance – Depending on the amount of skill owners, this skill increases the rate of a preemptive attack. It further increases WIS by a small amount.

Bronie (brownie):
Align Art – For each person with this skill, it increases the maximum number of items you can carry by five. It further increases VIT by a small amount.
Herbalism – A skill that increases the HP recovery effects of recovery items when used in battle.

They indicate that there are more racial skills to discover, and that some are union skills.

Union skills:
Union skills are special skills that require building up a union gauge before you can activate them. This sounds similar to previous team skills in EO, but the difference seems to be that they tied in with racial skills.

Fencer
The Fencer is a front row, evasion-type attacker. It is a swordsman class that fends off enemy attacks with quick movements and links together various attacks.

yeah there's been little talk of EO 5 here. I was playing it for a little bit but I couldn't muster the energy to finish b1f, so... I mean, I'm not implying it's bad It's just I've finished EO3 (original) and EO2 (remake), and 5 just does not seem to offer me absolutely any incentive to play it.

I don't even know if it features any additions to the game play or if it has better systems, I haven't bothered poring over details from EO 5, all I know is I'm a bit exhausted of this franchise after 2 games.

EDIT: reading this very thread and this stuff about weapon uprgading might draw me into EO 5. the differing map layouts is not something I consider good since it's always better to just make the best possible map possible, not in wasting resources making optional layouts; but I'm a weapon enchantment zealot so the weapon upgrading sounds like a good addition and something needed.

EO5 is... okayish. I stopped playing after reaching the 2nd Stratum, then picked it up again and went up to the 4th Stratum before finally giving up. EO2 is still the best: improved upon the first without changing too much, unlike the messy EO3.

EO5, currently on 5th stratum. It's fine - to me it actually feels like an earlier iteration of EOU2, i.e. not quite as good but a competent replication of the experience. But playing EOU2 the very first time I think has doomed me. I'd be fine to put down money for a new (last?) EO, I don't think they're actively going backwards or anything and they do try to make sensible variations on the formula with each one.

EO5 is OK. Nothing too much to write home about. It felt really rushed toward the end and the various systems also scream of rushed development. In the overall arc of the series I'd consider EO5 to be above the DS versions of EO1 & 2, but worse than everything else that came after EO3 (which I haven't played). The food system is hilarious bad and the cooking interface is complete garbage, I wish they had just outright scrapped it. aweigh don't get too excited about the weapon enhancement system either. You just grind for the same materials that you needed to unlock and buy the weapon, and use said materials to enhance its damage and bonus stats / skill that is provided by the weapon, but there's nothing fancy here. It's just a new layer of grind that you have to do and a +5 weapon is about the equivalent of any normal store bought weapon in earlier Etrians in terms of power. EO4 had weapon crafting, too, but it had free slots in weapons that you could forge in whatever you wanted, like more HP, damage, defense or a chance to apply an ailment or bind, make it do elemental damage. It was far more flexible and interesting. This is just a grindy piece of garbage.

EO5 also suffers from a lack of content. There aren't many boss fights and after you finish the 5th stratum the amount of quests plummet. The whole game is also populated by these little C&C events and they are completely absent from the 6th stratum, another point that says the game was rushed.

Class balance is mediocre. Half the classes, like the Masurao, Fencer, Harbinger and Shaman, are dead weight until you finish the 2nd stratum and unlock the class specializations, which is why I have made a master save for this point so I never need to go through those two stratums and be bored to tears again. I did it twice and that's enough for me. Furthermore Pugilist is probably the single most powerful class in all of EO. It's ridiculously powerful to the point of being utterly broken. It deals more damage than the Dark Hunter, who used to be the OP class of the series, except the Pugilist doesn't require the same kind of setup and exists in a game where there is less HP bloat, which makes the class even more grossly over powered. A single Impact Pugilist will carry you throughout most of the game. It doesn't even matter what other classes you take. Maybe take two of them and enjoy killing bosses in 1-2 turns with zero effort.

There are some aggravating things about EO5 FOE puzzles that work against the low quality memory chip they used for the game to save money. They cut corners and it shows in the tech of the game. It has a far poorer draw distance than any of the other 3DS EO games. Then there are some FOE puzzles that depend on you seeing which direction the FOE is facing but because of the shit draw distance you don't. It's not a major issue, but it is annoying and shows a lack of professionalism when it comes to designing a game with the tech available to you, unless the dev team had no idea that this is what was going to happen.

Still all in all not an awful game for a team of first timers (it's an entirely new team that made EO5), and I really appreciate them not recycling any old art assets. But the game just wasn't a big hurrah, especially for a numbered title. Etrian Odyssey Untold 2 is still the best game in the series. There's one more EO coming out for the 3DS that will be officially announced during the spring of 2018. Atlus just had their Etrian Odyssey 10th anniversary talk and there they said that this game will be the culmination of the series as a whole and that people should be ready to draw maps (probably means that there's going to be a lot of floors to map out). Still no sign of EOU3.

New Etrian Odyssey for 3DS to be announced on April 10

The "true culmination" of the dungeon RPG series.

EO-3DS_04-06-18.jpg

Atlus will announce a new entry in its Etrian Odyssey dungeon RPG series for 3DS during a live stream on April 10 at 12:00 JST, the company announced. You will be able to watch it live on YouTube and Periscope.

The new Etrian Odyssey title, which was first confirmed in September 2017, is said to be a “festival-like” culmination of the series. In December 2017, series director Shigeo Komori said that it will not be Etrian Odyssey 3 Untold, but rather a “true culmination” with a lot of map drawing and “completely unexpected content.”

Etrian Odyssey X Announced For 3DS As A Series Crossover Title On August 2 In Japan

Atlus announced the latest installment of the Etrian Odyssey series with Etrian Odyssey X [Cross] featuring 19 classes including the new Hero class and more for Nintendo 3DS.

Here’s its announcement trailer:

The game is called a “complete crossover of the entire series” as the very last brand-new title that will be on the 3DS. It takes place in a new land called Remlia, where adventurers from around the world gather on the flying city known as “Magnia.”

There are a total of 19 classes from across the series, including the brand new “Hero” class which we’ll get more information on later.

There are tons of labyrinths in the new setting of Remlia. Etrian Odyssey X boasts more volume than any title before.

The game systems are also crossover from past titles with features including character creation, subclasses, Force Boost/Force Break, and difficulty settings.

First-print copies come with the “New Adventurer Illustration Packs” which comes with five different class illustrations from a variety of artists.

Etrian Odyssey X releases in Japan on August 2, 2018 for Nintendo 3DS.

Well, 19 classes? :shredder:

Can't wait for the Switch EO :happytrollboy:
Though the wording is vague enough to leave them a backdoor for EOU3 on the 3DS first before the series transitions to another platform. Glad to see many of my favorite classes make it into this title. I hope my less favorite ones get fixed so I can enjoy them as well.

Well, why not. It's testament to the robustness of the formula that I could do with another one of these, especially with 19 classes. Not sure how the hell they'll balance it out though.

They are taking all the most OP classes from their respective games and adding them into a game with subclassing and force boost. I don't think balance was ever on the table.

At that stage, you might as well just make it classless, throw in everything into a big pool, and then add in some kind of point buy system and call it a day. It would be a lot less hassle than working out what to subclass to when, and just as unbalanced/powergameparty.

Classless system would get rid of too many restrictions that would shatter the party dynamic that makes party building so fun in EO. Even with subclasses you are still subject to the same restrictions that are present within parties that have no subs.

I've started playing EO1 a little while ago. It's really fun - but man, the Turbo button is a lifesaver...
I don't think I'll be able to play any dungeon crawler without one.

I heard the director of SMT V was in charge of the new EO and it's been almost a year since SMT V came out. EO games are relatively simple so i think they should have something to show after a year of development.

Best place to start this series with a hacked 3ds? the ds titles or 3ds? I don’t care much for completionism when there’s so many entries, so I could use a solid entry-point recc..

3 is regarded as the best DS game and IV is the easiest one on the 3DS.

I would go 3-4-5-U1-U2-nexus (release order). 1-2 you can skip if u want but 2 is a fine game. 3 is my favorite but its also hard and missing some qol features so u can start from 4 also.
