Yeah, that's the one thing that annoyed me about the series.
It always amuses me when they pull the player out of the machine, and tried to show them, 'Hey, there's gameplay here...', hoping the players would dig in.
Except in reality, most players can't wait to skip this part and get back into Animus.

Seems he's expecting far too much from an AC game to delve into the why's and how's of slavery.

Well, as is mentioned in the linked blog, it's not that he expects it to do X or Y, he's just discussing the possibilities. If you want a 'game is good/bad because X/Y' then you're looking in the wrong place.

^So he's saying SR4 is like a Paul Verhoeven or John Carpenter film? That's bullshit.

SR4 is nothing more than "anything goes" meaningless wackiness. It's like Goat Simulator.

GTA, even with its lousy execution, is still genuine social satire.

Preaching teh evulz of Great Man history is a good retard alarm, imo.
Taking credit for his own work, even under a pseudonym, seems contradictory to the idea that is implied in the video: that the achievements of a "civilization" (TROUBLING) are collective.

Was a pretty disappointing video. Even assuming he wants to critique it on the basis of it's social meaning rather than it's value as entertainment, there's plenty he could have said about it that was positive too. He doesn't bother to mention the way various mechanics encourage peace or scientific progress or even artistic achievements, and goes off on some rant about 'great things' being bad that was a HUGE stretch from any real basis in the game. Might as well rant about golden coins in Super Mario encouraging third world exploitation in mines for luxuries.

At this point it seems like he doesn't even give a fuck about the games or mechanics any more and just wants to rant about different ideologies to no real end. The days of talking about game mechanics and design aspects seem to be over. Sad, because his early videos were pretty good. He had interesting stuff to say about Doom. All he had to say about the Civ series was a bunch of lame preaching about (perceived) social ills.

Did this guy go to a U.S. university? Sounds like typical programming. "That thing/person people thought was great in the past wasn't even great yo. Fact!"

...not sure what's the point of talking about that.

Oh god

1:30 and he already lost me

Civ was an idea created with simple mechanics that proved to be addictive enough to get many sequels without changing core gameplay. There's nothing metaphorical about it, just a lot of abstraction.
