Ships are commonly females and, depending on the historian, countries can be feminine as well. It varies with Fatherland/Motherland dichotomy.

I remember having to start over in Curse of the Azure Bonds because I took on Zhentil Keep way before my party could handle it :( Loved that crazy beholder easter egg fight though.

Speaking of SSI games, I was a bit bummed the article didn't mention Stronghold! Talk about a lost classic!
