What are the best Marvel comic books? How about DC? Everything else? I read some Marvel in my teens, but otherwise am new to comic books. What have I been missing?

I think the only type of comic book I can read are hipster-ish stuff like Clowes which are probably too entry-level and uninteresting to deserve mention

If you're looking for a start point you should probably read them vertigo comics, you know the ones with all the smokers and shadows and biblical characters

Best Marvel comic actually published by Marvel: Supreme Power
Best Marvel comic acquired by Marvel: Miracleman (aka Marvelman, currently still out of print)

For best DC comic, you're going to have specify imprint, subgenre, style, etc... It's a lot longer list of candidates than Marvel. Unless you'd do the obvious and say Watchmen/V for Vendetta.

You forgot Lucky Luke and Iznougoud you bastard. If you're gonna list a Goscinny comic, you've gotta list the Big Three of them. Don't you dare claim I only read Anglo comics, I own (almost) every volume of Asterix and Lucky Luke!

Personally, I think Asterix is his funniest, and Uderzo was the finest artist he worked with.

My top ten favourite Goscinny comics:

Asterix in Corsica (my #1 Goscinny favourite)
Asterix and the Mansions of the Gods
    Asterix in Egypt
    Obelix and Co.
    Asterix the Legionnaire
    Asterix in Britannia
    Lucky Luke: Tenderfoot
Lucky Luke: Barbed Wire On The Praerie
    Lucky Luke: The Dalton Cousins
Lucky Luke: A Cure for the Daltons

I was more interested in story recommendations than whole series. Is there any particularly good Wolverine story, for example? Or Spider-man, or some other classic character?

This was nice and could interest the "Order over Chaos will prevent the world's moral collapse" codexers, if only to bitch at it.

Someone I've been messaging with had the following to say when the subject came to animations and comics:
"I almost completely avoid American comics and especially abhor the superhero bullshit. They are as deep as neckbeards think themselves intelligent. Greater the delusion, deeper the character, rare exceptions notwithstanding".

What do you say now, Codex? What is the proper reply one gives on this?

Sounded pretty right on the money to me.

Correct answer is to hand him a mirror.

You're generally looking at multi-album series for stories. Individual, fully self-contained single-issue stories are generally rare, and you still need to buy albums. Generally you're looking at a particular story arc or series. Anyway, here are some excellent single-issue stories:

Saga of the Swamp Thing #32: Pog (included in Swamp Thing vol 2)
Animal Man #5: The Coyote Gospel (included in Animal Man vol 1)
Doom Force Special #1 (included in Doom Patrol vol 6)

As for stories that are contained in a single album, here's some:

Kingdom Come (Superman, Batman and co)
Superman: Red Son (Superman is going to dominate this list btw)
    Superman: Secret Origin
    Superman: Ending Battle
All-Star Superman (two volumes, but it's really, REALLY good)
Final Crisis (DCU gets full Grant Morrison magic mushroom treatment, results in best event comic evar)
    JLA: Rock of Ages
Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On A Serious Earth (Batman)
    Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
    Batman: R.I.P.
    Green Lantern: Rebirth

    For Marvel:

    Planet Hulk
    Marvel: 1602

Hmmmm, can't think of any more for Marvel...

Sandman: Awesome, especially if you have an interest in Mythology.
Preacher: Great stuff based on Christian Mythology.
    The Invisibles: Awesome
Elf Quest: I hate to fucking admit this, but for the most part, it was actually good, story wise (and setting). I want to HATE IT...

Bros, the question was for single issues/one album stories. That rules Planetary, The Invisibles, Sandman, Doom Patrol, Animal Man, Swamp Thing, etc out of the question, as many of them are six volumes. Otherwise they'd be obvious recommendations. And of course, he seemed to want superhero comics on classic characters.

Superhero comics have pro-wrestling storylines. They will dissolve your soul. Avoid.

For better results, read Judge Dredd or Hellblazer.

Don't worry, Eyeball, I'm back to novel reading, currently plowing through Signs of Life -- almost done now. I love the dialogues and hate everything else. Trying to focus on the rest of the stuff is like trying to visualise a nine-dimensional cube. That book is like an advanced meditation exercise. Whenever one of those pretentious descriptions comes along my mind begins to wander like a distracted child. But oh God those dialogues, they're hilarious!

    AHAHAHAHA

Judge Dredd is a classic comic, but storyline and writing quality are not the reason for that.

Also, like it or not, Hellblazer is a spin-off of a superhero comic.

Yeah, Dredd storylines are admittedly nothing to write home about. He more than makes up for that by virtue of being hilariously fascist and occasionally dropping all pretense of being a serious series to go amusingly Full Retard, usually by parodying some pop culture fad.

I just love the kind of framework most of the Hellblazer stories seem to follow.

Page 1 Constantine: "Hey, I accidentally stumbled into a sticky situation involving an eldritch horror. I know, I'll summon an even bigger demon to deal with it, that's real sound reasoning!"

Page 2 Constantine: "Oh shit, how could I possibly have foreseen that this would turn out badly? Excuse me while I go sacrifice a friend or family member to save my own sorry ass."

I'd recommend Elf Quest... to an 11-year-old!
