It is a good story centric squad TBS. X-Comish but beplace base-building with a requisition map thing. Pretty good character development. Recommended for non-idiots with decent taste.

Am I the only one playing this? Its by the developers of Heroes of Steel. Its good. I can't be the only one here who likes good games.

Looks like a fun game, but nothing like an RPG at all, unless XCOM is an RPG.

I agree with butchy - Templar Battleforce is pretty shamelessly ripping off Space Hulk and 40K in general, but it's actually very enjoyable.

It can best be described as a turn-based version of Dawn of War 2: lead your squad of 6 Not Space Marines through the linear campaign across various planets and spaceships in fights against different types of Not Tyranids and other types of xenos (seriously, that's what they call them).

What sets it apart from Space Hulk is the fact that the levels are far more open and not entirely made of cramped corridors and there are more variety in your types of Not Space Marines, who can be specialised throughout the campaign individually as well as getting new skills and equipment through the game's humongous "research tree", which you progress through by spending points aquired from completing mission objectives.

Gameplay itself is turn-based and revolves around AP management, much like Space Hulk: each character gets 5 AP and 6 movement points which can be spent semi-seperately, making running and gunning a viable strategy in many cases - you can't fire and run indiscriminately, however: Not Space Marine mecha suits are apparently shittily made and overheat quite easily if your troops strain themselves too much gunning down aliens, causing DOTs to your troops from heat without proper management, adding an additional layer of strategy to squad management.

The similarity to DOW2 involves the fact that some missions include Requisition Points, which are basically resource-generating factories you can capture with your engineer heroes to recruit replacement heroes in the field or produce consumable items such as medikits or extra grenades or other weapons. This particular feature is fairly tacked-on, to be frank, and the game wouldn't miss out on much without it.

It has a bunch of problems, most notably that you can't pick which troops you'd like to bring along on a mission but tend to get saddled with at least one fairly useless scout, but it's overall an enjoyable experience. It's not quite Xcom, but I'm having a lot of fun with Templar Battleforce and my squad is progressing nicely. It's worth the 8 euros I paid for it.

The Trese Brothers are a proper bunch of nerds who made a couple of quirky, flawed but interesting games. Space Hulk rip-off, megadrive shadowrun/cyberpunk rip-off, Avernum dark and gritty fantasy rpg rip-off and some Dune 4x rip off. Self indulgent geek stuff with crummy graphics but a lot of love poured into them. Can't really recommend them but I got a sof spot for these games nonetheless.

Especially as these guys started out as a mom and pop photo studio who made a game in the slow hours and just kept at it. I like shit like that.

It shows, too - there is quite a lot of background on their forums about stats and game mechanics, so it's quite obviously Templar is a board game they managed to digitize.

Speaking of Space Marines, steam is having a free weekend. I generally only like rpgs or games with heavy rpg elements, I downloaded and it seems like I have some troops and I watch them fight bad guys. I guess watching a game play itself is fun if your a fucking idiot, but is there anything rpgish to these games? Is it just pure crap RT clock and watch and do nothing?

Lastly, what is it lately with everyone saying everything is a clone or a rip-off? Did warhammer rip off Starship Trooper or a likely even earlier SF work that had people fighting in giant soldier space suits? Warhammer is a D&D rip-off. D&D is a LotR rip-off. Dune is a Moses rip-off. That hasn't been a game that isn't like a bunch of other games since Archon. And Archon is sort of like chess. And who knows, there probably have been a ton of games like Archon I just never heard of.

I just wished everyone would stop this everything is a clone of contentless Legends of Grimlock nonsense, and everything is a rip-off of whatever, when whatever was a rip-off of another thing. Its just silly.

I had more fun with their previous non-space Hulk game (Templar Assault), than with digitalized Space Hulk, so I am definitely getting this. They have a tendency to get heavy handed on the grind side, though.

I've been playing a bit, it's pretty fun. They've also been adding content and feature requests pretty consistently since release, and seem intent on adding a lot more.

Dunno man, the last time I've played Wizardry 7 I've had some party and I've watched them fighting bad guys :popamole:

The last time I've played Quake I was just pushing buttons and watching how my character kills everybody.

Where are those games where you have to take your trusty rifle in your hands, go swim in a mud-rivers in the trenches and rip people's guts out with your bare hands?

We've had it better in my times.
