Several Middle Earth mods for AoE II have been tried but none of them have gotten off of the ground, until now it appears.

It makes the game very different (no shit its a total conversion mod) but its good, insofar as this very early release goes. The mod developers have said that once they can get the final 'release version' done they'll work on porting it to AoE II HD on steam.

I played as Arnor during my first attempt (if you don't know your LOTR lore this will go over your head, so just use Tolkien Gateway you philistine)

What was neat was when you reached 'the imperial age' you had a choice of upgrading to Arthedain, Cardolan, or Rhudaur. I upgraded to Arthedain because Dunedain Purity yo.

And depending on which you choose to upgrade to, in my case Arthedain, you can get special 'extra' Civ bonuses and even unique units, with Arthedain you get the ability to make Dunedain Chieftains (super-pikemen basically) or Rangers of the North (troll slaying specializing unique unit). The same mechanic exists for Numenor as well, choosing to be a King's Man or Faithful, but I didn't get to explore it very much. But it looks good, and I'm hoping they HD Release if only because Steam's multiplayer support is great.
