I usually stay away from those fan mods/patches for existing games, they tend to go overboard and consider themselves "visionary artists", changing too much to their liking. Bloodlines comes in mind...
The fanmade graphics update for System Shock however was a good thing, because it really helps bringing new players to it's goodness, who would normally turn away from those low poly models. Not that SS2 really needs a graphics overhaul, it's atmosphere comes from what you DON'T see, but only hear.
In fact, SS2 became a little less creepy with the upgraded "zombie" models for me, the old ones had a certain charme...
Far more creepy however have the midwives become, because the designer spent far too much time slapping higher res nekkid boobs on that abomination. Eeeeewww. :|
