Well if it's just for consoles as someone suggested in this thread, no problem really. It looks like it's quite a decent UI to navigate with a gamepad. However, if this is what they are using for PC version as well, it's not taking advantage of mouse/keyboard at all. I would prefer a grid-like icon-based inventory (so I can see more than 6 items at once) with drag & drop arranging etc. Think pretty much Morrowind/Twitcher 1, throw in a "Sort by:" dropdown list and maybe even a "Search" function and there you have it.

I'm hoping that smithing includes repairing shit. I couldn't see any health stats on that weapon screen.

Weapons breaking? I doubt it. Smithing is probably just to craft new equipment.

But you can pretend that the weapon had braked, and don't use it until you visit the smith, the game does support this possibility.

OB had equipment breaking over time, but it just got unusable until you repaired it (it's not lost forever). And yeah, I believe Smithing is just Armorer (repair) + crafting.

On it's own, the Armorer skill in Oblivion is fucking boring. I think it's just bad design; your weapons wear down over time and either you fix them or you don't. Nothing particularly interesting about that. I mean, IIRC there was a high-level perk you get that would allow you to repair weapons past 100% so that it would be deadlier, but nothing other than that.

Personally, if I had my way, they'd scrap the current (dull) Armorer skill that they had in Oblvion and they'd replace it with a more developed crafting system, where you'd modify weapons to alter their reach, speed, and damage for extra effectiveness. But considering this is Bethesda and streamlining is the name of the game, there's a snowball's chance in hell of this happening.

From the E3 demo posted in another topic (same video but longer) Todd don't mention repairing weapons when questioned about smithing, just pimping them up. So yeah, I think they got away with weapon condition, now you can only upgrade it.

Todd mentioned crafting & enchanting weapons as well. Guess it's going to be as in Risen.

Oblivion was probably a console -> PC port as well, so that's not that big of a deal. It was released on both PC and 360 on the same day so I imagine that's probably the case.

Am I alone in thinking that even the console fans of the series would enjoy more complex stuff in the game, though? Weapons with more stats, smithing your own stuff, etc. Maybe I'm wrong.

From what I've seen on the internet, people like some complexity, as long as the game doesn't hand out harsh punishments for making retarded choices and / or for not paying much attention.

Like, New Vegas had weapon modification kits and it was a well received feature, but some magazine (EGM?) had a little blurb in their preview saying something like "But don't worry, all mods give only positive effects, so you don't need to think which mod is worth installing :) "

So it's just 2011's version of Oblivion, who would have guessed? Even the graphics are similar, don't know if it's the limitation of the engine or just the same shitty artists.

    Don't forget this part:

“We wanted to take it and make it really accessible,” the producer said.“… We still have the complexity behind the scenes, but we wanted to make it so that you could pick up the controller and play and it was easy; the average person could get into it…We knew we wanted to make the user interface a little bit more open and available … get away from the stats and things like that.”

They are not so much similar as they are same. Technology has stalled. We haven't truly progressed from mid 2000's in terms of graphical sophistication. One part is consoles, another is simply the CPU power-wall that was hit in 04-05, and the subsequent dominance of DirectX as the API of choice. Also, they (Bethesda) probably save a pretty penny by reusing content from Oblivion and maybe retouching it a bit, and make no mistake about it, this is all about pennies, dollars, currency, etc, as far as they are concerned.

Interestingly, they finally got rid of stats\numbers. They were pretty superfluous in Oblivion. I have a character/save game with over 90 hours plus another 30 hours of unsaved replays, so we are talking around 120 hours, dating all the way to 2008. Now ask me for any of the stats, attributes, or skills of this character? No fuken clue. All the numbers in Oblivion are so irrelevant to the gameplay that you don't really need to visit that part of the menu AT ALL. I don't think I peeked "in there" in 3-4 months and I play this character/save on a semi-regular basis. They finally caught on and removed it. That part of the UI/menu will be replaced by a minigame. Space Invaders, except with mudcrabs. About same usefulness as the old stats screen.

Uh... was there seriously any doubt as to that or Oblivion? Just look at the UIs.

Well some devs have done a better job than others; ahem TW2; but I know what you mean. I think that consoles of course are a major force, but also pure economics as you say. The devs even benefit from people whining about how consoles have stifled the graphical advancement of games as it lets them off the hook and they save money by licensing old tech such as UE3 or Fagbryo for every game.

You know, I've just put in 40 hours on and off over the past few weeks into modded FO3 and I also know fuck all about the stats of my character. It's pretty damning for an RPG that such things don't seem to matter in the slightest. I remember even in Morrowind I would actually pay some attention to the stats, never mind proper RPG's from the 90's, but here? I can't even be arsed to rage at the 'streamlining' of stats in Beth games as they mean jack shit as you say anyway. Going full action with major character upgrades is the only sensible path, make ES games eventually into sandbox Dark Messiah(as someone said here somewhere).

Speaking of this, someone noticed the sound clips (death sounds) used in the gameplay videos are the same you hear in many other games and movies. Bethesda cutting corners and using free unoriginal sounds, who would have thought?

So why the fuck are they call it an RPG? I raged. Srsly.
To give an illusion to a retard-gamer-CoD that he is some intelectual elite, because he that plays rpg game?

I didn't raged lately so hard since Oblivion. Games are going to shit (no shit!). And it saddens me.

Those are just rubbish excuses spouted by the devs to save some face. They spend all their time on rendering techniques suitable for low resolutions then complain bruteforcing them on the PC at higher resolutions doesn't give expected results. Or just watch how "well" your CPU cores are used in majority of games...
