Day 3 : My Heart's Desire.

Chapter 7 Soundtrack :

Yet again Gabriel tried his best and Malia turned him down. That's all the begging he can muster at the moment, Malia will have to work this out on her own.

sierra_3982.png

The situation calls for some drinks. Let's head over to the Napoleon House :

sierra_3990.png

Gabriel and the bartender, Stonewall king, are old pals...

sierra_4000.png

barman.png
It's been worse.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Business picking up?

barman.png
Some. Mostly locals, as usual.

We glance around. Two men are playing chess :

sierra_4013.png

Markus.png
You know, Sam, you're just about the worst chess player I ever knew.

sam.png
Shut up, Markus!

Heh, the game is heated. We turn our attention back to our pal :

sierra_4021.png

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Hey Stonewall, know anything about Voodoo ?

barman.png
Voodoo? Don't believe in it myself. I invented a drink once called Laveau's Tomb, but it wasn't very popular.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
I can't imagine why...

barman.png
Some people do believe, though. Even some of our regulars here at Napoleon House.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
So, what can you tell me about your regulars in here?

barman.png
This crowd? The ones you see are mostly regulars. That guy and girl in the corner come here a lot. When they're not fighting, they're all over each other.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
In other words they're in love. What about the rest of them ?

sierra_4051.png

barman.png
Sam...the one with the purple jacket? He's lost every one of those games.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
That bad, huh ?

barman.png
It's not that he's a bad player. I've seen him beat guys twice as good as Markus, but Markus has Sam so psyched out, he loses his nerve every time.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Any other regulars ?

barman.png
I'd call you a regular, Gabe. And one of our local writer celebrities, too. Been coming in here, what, ten years now?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
<groan> Don't remind me.

barman.png
We're still waiting for that best seller.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Don't hold your breath.

sierra_4056.png

Gabe-coat-sm.png
So what has Sam told you about Voodoo?

barman.png
Well, about fifty years ago, Sam was too shy to talk to this pretty girl he was in love with. He went to a Voodooienne and had her make him a love charm. It was a little pouch that he had to bury under the girl's front porch.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Uh-oh.

barman.png
Well, he buried the pouch, and the next day he went up and talked to the girl and--sure enough--she didn't reject him. Now she's his wife, poor guy.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Be careful what you wish for...

barman.png
Yeah. He's a jeweler by profession, but lately he's been spending most of his time here, playing chess.

Well, he doesn't seem like an expert, but it wouldn't hurt talking to him.

sierra_4102.png

Markus.png
What game ? This isn't a game, it's a slaughter !

sam.png
He's right, you know, so lemme die in peace, would ya ?

No one wants to talk to us :( Maybe it's time to head to the university and attend the lecture on African religions.

sierra_4153.png

sierra_4159.png

sierra_4164.png

professor.png
The word Voudoun may sound familiar to you. What is known in the States as 'Voodoo' is actually an amalgamation of African religious systems, Voudoun, and European religions, primarily Catholicism.

sierra_4172.png

professor.png
Some of these spirits are elementals, some relate to specific tasks or places, some represent important tribal leaders who have died.

sierra_4177.png

professor.png
At the height of tribal Africa, warfare was common. One tribe would conquer another, and the Loa important in the conqueror's tribal system would be adopted readily into the conquered tribe's Loa pantheon.

sierra_4184.png

sierra_4191.png

professor.png
Africa is believed by many to be the cradle of the human race. Some of the Voudoun Loa may be as old as the Garden of Eden itself.

sierra_4200.png

professor.png
Now, let's discuss the elements of Voudoun...

Gabe-coat-sm.png
<yawn> Fascinating guy.

professor.png
In Voudoun, the spirits are called the Loa.

sierra_4208.png

professor.png
A person being ridden by a Loa takes on the characteristics of that spirit and becomes, in effect, merely a vessel for the more powerful entity.

sierra_4217.png

sierra_4221.png

Gabe-coat-sm.png
<yawn> I gotta get more sleep at night.

professor.png
Tribe-specific Loa can have as much or more power as the more widely-worshiped Loa. For instance, a particular tribe might revere highly the Loa of an ancestor who was a legendary hunter or politician.

sierra_4231.png

professor.png
In a Voudoun hounfour, there's a ritual circle marked by a center pole called a poteau-mitan.

sierra_4237.png

sierra_4245.png

professor.png
The use of totems, or animal masks and markings, was not uncommon in the original African ceremonies. Now, though, all but the oldest sects have abandoned this practice.

sierra_4251.png

sierra_4253.png

Hey, that looks familiar...

Gabe-coat-sm.png
That knife gives me the chills.

professor.png
...the ritual whip, or fwet kash...

sierra_4260.png

professor.png
These items are often optional, called for by the mamaloa for specific magical rituals.

sierra_4266.png

professor.png
The mamaloa is the supreme woman--she <mutter> butterflies and <mumble> fireflies...

Gabe, can't seem to take it any more :

sierra_4272.png

sierra_4296.png

sierra_4299.png

Gabriel? Get in.

Can't! 's too small for me!

You must get in, Gabriel.

's not mine! Too small!

sierra_4334.png

sierra_4337.png

sierra_4343.png

sierra_4347.png

sierra_4348.png

Whoops.

sierra_4355.png

This Voodoo stuff is getting to Gabriel. Let's hope Dr. Hartridge can shed some light :

sierra_4368.png

Gabe-coat-sm.png
No. My name is Knight. Gabriel Knight.

professor.png
Well, you have walked into my private office, Mr. Knight. I hope you have something worthwhile to do here. If you figure it out, let me know.

Dr. Hartridge is sharp-eyed and even sharper-tongued. When he condescends to look at Gabriel at all, it's with a dismissive glare. Let's try to get on his good side...

sierra_4379.png

professor.png
Oh, you think so? You were snoring so loud, I didn't think you'd heard it.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Uh... I suppose having all this Voodoo stuff sitting around doesn't make you nervous at all.

professor.png
It's 'Voudoun stuff.' And, no. Why should it?

That's what we want to find out...

sierra_4397.png

Gabe-coat-sm.png
What can you tell me about Voodoo?

professor.png
You already sat through my lecture on the subject, Mr. Knight. Perhaps next time you could stay awake and learn something.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Touche. What do you think about the Voodoo murders ?

professor.png
I've read about them in the papers. I must admit to some interest.

sierra_4405.png

professor.png
I'm sure there are many so-called 'practitioners' out there that have no idea what they're doing or the power they're playing with.

Let's ask the million dollar question:

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Do you have any idea what cabrit sans cor' means?

professor.png
It's French, and literally translates as 'goat without horns.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
As in a female goat?

professor.png
No. As in a human sacrifice. Sacrifices in Voudoun are usually of the animal variety--chickens, bulls, goats... If the gods demand a 'goat without horns' it means a human being.

It seems the gods have been very demanding recently. We should ask more :

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Tell me more about human sacrifice.

sierra_4452.png

professor.png
For example, one of the chants I had translated for me from a Haitian ritual went like this :

professor.png
Mistress Erzulie, come and aid us. If a cock is demanded, we will give it... If a bull will suffice, behold it. But if a goat without horns is required for sacrifice, oh, where will we find one?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Is Erzulie fond of human sacrifice ?

professor.png
Erzulie is the gentlest of Loa, so they call on her for mercy. But I have seen grown and powerful houngan tremble before a possession by one of the more violent Loa--such as Papa Nebo. Clearly, they are afraid that something of the sort will be ordered--or that the Loa will simply take it for themselves.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Huh.

professor.png
I wouldn't dwell on it. Most Voudoun sects probably haven't seen a human sacrifice for several generations.

Is that so ? Let's see what he has to say about the murder photo :

sierra_4474.png

professor.png
This is serious Voudoun ritual. Nasty stuff.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
In what way?

professor.png
Let's see, I can't make out much detail from this photograph--except for the corpse, of course... But the wound, the face, and what little I can see of the ritual paraphernalia...

Gabe-coat-sm.png
..Yes ?

professor.png
Hmmm. It reminds me of certain black Voudoun practices. Very rare. I've never witnessed them myself, you understand.

A-ha ! At last someone can confirm that the Voodoo is authentic !
What about the reconstructed pattern ?

sierra_4494.png

professor.png
Wow. Interesting... VERY interesting! Mind if I copy this?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Be my guest.

professor.png
Great! I'll be right back!

sierra_4505.png

professor.png
Here you go. You know, this is a fascinating veve! You must tell me all about its origin!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Actually, I was hoping YOU'D tell ME. Can you figure out anything about it from the symbols?

professor.png
Well, some. That's why I wanted a copy. I want to research the design myself. Each of the symbols in the veve represent something--a Loa, a place... Where did you get this?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Have you heard of the Voodoo Murders?

professor.png
No! You're kidding! Really? Then the Voodoo IS authentic! The newspapers are wrong. Boy, are they wrong!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
You think this...veve...is authentic, then?

professor.png
Authentic? Mr. Knight, that's like asking if the Mona Lisa is a painting.

sierra_4527.png

professor.png
Uh...you ARE associated with the police, aren't you?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Absolutely. But I'm...undercover. You can contact me at the St. George's Book Shop. In the Quarter.

professor.png
All right. Now, I'd like to get started on this, if you don't mind.

Finally, we're getting somewhere ! The other lead we have is this crazy old lady, Madamme Cazanoux. Let's see if we can talk to her.

sierra_4545.png

sierra_4554.png

Sweet-talking an old lady should be easy for Gabe...

sierra_4557.png

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Hi! I'm doing an article on Voodoo, and I heard that you...

cazanoux.png
I'm a good Catholic, young man! Take your evil influence elsewhere!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
But, I just have a few questions...

cazanoux.png
I can feel the evil eye! Go away!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
I can assure you that-

cazanoux.png
I told you NO! This house is under the protection of the saints! Now go AWAY!

:/

Damn. She sure is god-fearing... Hmmm, that gives me an idea. Why don't he head over to the Cathedral :

sierra_4610.png

...And plunder the Priest's chamber !

sierra_4622.png

Let's take it !

Gabe-coat-sm.png
I can't resist black.

We'll burn in hell...

preacher-470x721.jpg

And how about a priest's collar ?

sierra_4633.png

Tru dat. Time to visit the Cazanoux residence as a messenger from god...

sierra_4657.png

We shall see :

sierra_4662.png

Gabe-coat-sm.png
It's Father MacLaughlin ta see ye.

cazanoux.png
Well, Father, you should be ashamed of yourself, being so ill-groomed!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Uh, I-

cazanoux.png
I'm sure the Bishop would never approve! You can just go get a hair cut before you come calling again on me! I know my duty, Father, but a priest seeking contributions should take pains to represent the Church with respect!

SLAM !

Oh shit. I'm sure Gabriel never thought his hair could ever be an obstacle. Is there anything we could do about it ?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
I'm NOT cutting my hair !

Hey, sure, maybe we could do something less drastic :

sierra_4672.png

That's right, the hair gel ! Let's put it to good use.

sierra_4678.png

sierra_4679.png

Now father Gabriel is complete !

sierra_4696.png

gabe-priest.png
Well, when you're right, you're right.

cazanoux.png
Exactly. Come in, Father.

sierra_4715.png

Madame Cazaunoux looks fragile and pale under a thick layer of face powder. If Gabriel is not mistaken, she's a slice short of a loaf.

sierra_4734.png

cazanoux.png
But no, mon pere. I am always happy to see one of the good fathers.

gabe-priest.png
Have you been attending mass regularly, my child?

cazanoux.png
Oh, yes, Father. I attend mass every morning. Many don't these days, you know.

gabe-priest.png
You are dedicated, Madame.

sierra_4748.png

gabe-priest.png
Tell me about yourself, my child.

cazanoux.png
Me? I am Creole! My family has been in New Orleans for over two hundred years.

gabe-priest.png
So your roots are in France ?

cazanoux.png
REAL New Orleaneans are French. These days, the city is overrun with people with no heritage at all--no offense, Father, but it's true! But the French, naturellement, will always be the true blood of New Orleans!

gabe-priest.png
Naturellement. Do you know anything about Voodoo, my child ?

cazanoux.png
People think I'm just a foolish old woman, but I know the things they do! My family's been in New Orleans since 1750, so I know more than most!

sierra_4762.png

cazanoux.png
Spit on your bread at the bakery, take strands of your hair at the store when you try on clothes--you have to be so careful!

gabe-priest.png
Ain't that the truth.

cazanoux.png
But I know their ways, so I can protect myself! I know how to use the magic, too, and I can counteract their evil spells!

gabe-priest.png
Have you heard of the Voodoo Murders ?

cazanoux.png
Voodoo Murders! Hah! They are nothing new to me, Father, they happen all the time! I hardly go out anymore--it's too dangerous in the streets.

gabe-priest.png
Oh, it is, as dangerous as a den full of snakes !

cazanoux.png
Snakes! They're evil creatures! Did you know that evil people can send them into your dreams? They can! That's why I never sleep.

Whoa, this lady is seriously paranoid !

gabe-priest.png
Do you have any idea what cabrit sans cor' means?

cazanoux.png
Mais oui! I know. I bet you do not, Father. N'est-ce pas?

We sure do ! (this nets us a couple of points, we're aiming for high-score after all)

sierra_4791.png

cazanoux.png
Father, you surprise me! You DO know what it means! You know what they mean by 'goat without horns,' don't you? A human being! That's right! Slit your throat, cut out your heart--pure evil murder!

So, the old hag knows her Voodoo. Let's keep probing her...

gabe-priest.png
Do you know anything about Marie Laveau, my child ?

cazanoux.png
She was only a front for the real evildoers, the ones who performed Black Voodoo, and that's the truth about Marie Laveau!

gabe-priest.png
Black Voodoo ?

cazanoux.png
Oh yes, Father! It is the wickedest kind--the kind they practice here in New Orleans! Human sacrifice, father !

gabe-priest.png
What do you know about human sacrifice, here in New Orleans ?

cazanoux.png
Well, my great grandmother could tell stories--she saw it! People say that sort of thing wasn't done in New Orleans, but the REAL Voodoo queens did it! Oh, yes!

gabe-priest.png
Who were the REAL Voodoo queens ?

cazanoux.png
Well, my great grandmother told me that Laveau was just a front--a flamboyant decoy! She distracted authorities from the REAL Voodoo queen of New Orleans.

sierra_4833.png

cazanoux.png
The real Voodoo queen controlled Laveau--gave her a little bit of power and used her like a puppet.

gabe-priest.png
Is there anything else you remember about the real Voodoo queen?

cazanoux.png
Hmmm. Well, my great grandmother said the real Voodoo queen was the most beautiful woman on earth--she had the most incredible copper-colored skin!

gabe-priest.png
Really ? Anything else ?

cazanoux.png
Well, they're all brides of Satan. Other than that, I can't think of anything.

gabe-priest.png
You said there's a secret Voodoo hounfour ?

cazanoux.png
Well, I've never SEEN it--I wouldn't go near it if you paid me! But it's here in New Orleans, I guarantee it! I hear their drums at night, oh yes! That's why I'm so ill, I tell you--those drums!

sierra_4849.png

cazanoux.png
I'll show you something--something secret. You mustn't tell anyone, Father.

gabe-priest.png
I swear on my collar.

Well, that was a solid vow. Let's see what this is all about...

sierra_4856.png

She takes out some kind of bracelet...

gabe-priest.png
It radiates something, all right.

cazanoux.png
It belonged to my great-grandmother! She told my mother that it was a token to gain entrance to the REAL voodoo ceremonies!

gabe-priest.png
You don't say!

cazanoux.png
To tell you the truth, I've always felt nervous about having it in the house--you know, evil influence and all.

gabe-priest.png
I can see how you would, yes.

cazanoux.png
And yet I could never part with it--it's been in the family for generations! Would you bless it for me, Father? I feel strange asking such a thing of you, but surely you understand...

Why not ! Let's have a closer look :

sierra_4857.png

She said that this snake was used as a token to gain entrance to voodoo ceremonies... Maybe we could pay a visit sometime... We must get hold of the bracelet !

Unfortunately madame Cazanoux won't let us take it. All we can do now is "bless" it :

sierra_4880.png

gabe-priest.png
Let it do nobody harm, when they wear it on their arm. Voodoo spirits go away, don't come back another day... And now, let us pray.

:bravo:

At this point we've reached the most frustrating point in the game. The day won't end unless we do something with the bracelet, and this "something" involves pixel hunting and unlikely actions from our part.

We head for the lake and have a look at the banks :

sierra_4914.png

a-cunning-plan.jpg

mac.png
Clay deposits ? You can put some in your pockets, take it to the Cazanoux residence, use it on the bracelet to make a mold and then forge a new one !

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Huh ? No fucking way !

Yes, fucking way !

sierra_4924.png

mac.png
BTW, Gabriel ? My hair is more beautiful than yours.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
No it's not !

mac.png
Yes, it is. Look at this mullet. You don't have this magnificent mullet.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Oh shut up.

mac.png

We head back to madame Cazanoux...

sierra_4960.png

And we now use the clay...

sierra_4975.png

gabe-priest.png
Bless, oh, bless, this circlet of silver !

Masterfully, Gabe applies the clay on the bracelet :

sierra_4985.png

cazanoux.png
A lovely blessing, mon pere!

gabe-priest.png
Yes, I think it made a... lasting impression. (YEAHHH) Here you go.

cazanoux.png
I feel so much better now.

Well, at least we got some funny dialog... and a clay mold :

sierra_5000.png

Now since we have it our minds to infiltrate the voodoo gatherings, we'll need to hide our identity. The professor talked about practitioners using voodoo masks, maybe we should find one. Let's head to the Dixieland store :

sierra_5101.png

A-ha !

sierra_5107.png

Willy.png
Like the ones in the Voodoo rituals they do for the tourists?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Right!

Willy.png
I used to sell a few--as souvenirs.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Have you got any ?

Willy.png
The only one left is 'Willy Jr.' over there. The old crocodile. He's sort of a mascot now, him.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Would you be willing to let him go?

Willy.png
Hmmm. Maybe. For a hundred dollars.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
A hundred bucks? You've got to be kidding!

Willy.png
Me and Willy Jr. are very close, non? I couldn't part with him for less.

Crap. That's one hundred dollars more than what we have... Maybe we should go back to the store and check out daily earnings !

sierra_5137.png

sierra_5139.png

:/

When suddenly !

sierra_5150.png

Grace-sm.png
Bruno.

bruno-sm.png
Gabe, pet, I just popped in to see if you're desperate enough to sell me that painting.

Sadly, this seems like the only way to make some money...

sierra_5162.png

Grace-sm.png
Gabriel, don't you dare sell your father's painting!

Gabe-sm.png
Stay out of this, Grace.

bruno-sm.png
Ooh! You're serious? You'll let me have it?

Gabe-sm.png
Yeah, I'll let you have it, all right. How much for the painting?

bruno-sm.png
Well, I could give you a hundred. That's all I can let go at the moment, you know. My affairs are so tied up...

Grace-sm.png
Gabriel! A hundred dollars for your father's painting!

Gabe-sm.png
Grace, let me deal with this. Fine. It's yours.

Grace-sm.png
GABRIEL!!!

bruno-sm.png
Here! Here's the hundred.

Gabe-sm.png
You'd better take good care of this, Bruno. This is not just another of your hip art pieces, you know.

bruno-sm.png
REALLY? Well, I fully intend to make the most of its display, though not for YOUR sake, I'm sure. At least in MY shop, there'll be a chance of someone actually SEEING it!

Gabe reluctantly takes it down...

sierra_5197.png

bruno-sm.png
I can't BELIEVE I actually got it! Just WAIT until I show Cid!

Grace-sm.png
I don't believe you.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
It's...it's just a painting, Grace. There are things I have to do.

Well, that was depressing. But we'll use our money for a good purpose... To buy an old, ugly, crocodile mask !

sierra_5232.png

Willy.png
That's a hundred dollars, sure enough! The mask, it's yours, Sir.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Good.

Willy.png
Here you go. Careful it don't bite you, now.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Yeah. Thanks.

sierra_5252.png

Master-Gambling-oil , huh ?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
The sign said I could get Lady Luck Oil instead.

Willy.png
Well, I wasn't thinkin' a man as young as you would be needin' that kind of remedying, but if you's havin' problems with your...

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Uh, that's all right. Believe me, I don't need it. I'll just stick with this. Thanks anyway.

Willy.png
Heh, heh, heh. 'Course it ain't none of my business if you DO need it.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
I DON'T NEED IT!

Willy.png
'Course you don't.

Well, we got the mask and a voodoo gambling oil, to boot. Wait a minute, that guy at Napoleon's bar was (a)-having trouble with his game, (b)-a voodoo believer, (c)-a jeweler ! Another cunning plan takes form in Gabriel's mind :

sierra_5300.png

sam.png
I don't HAVE a game. That's my problem. Don't you touch those chess pieces while I'm gone, ya bastard.

Markus.png
I ain't never needed to cheat yet, ya loser.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Thought you might be interested in this gambling oil.

sam.png
Let me see that. Master Gamblin' oil? What's it for?

sierra_5318.png

sam.png
Get outta here! Markus would never use something like this!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Well...if that's what you want to believe... This is a powerful Voodoo oil.

sam.png
...really?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
This Voodoo oil could make a NUN get lucky.

sam.png
REALLY? You think it really works, huh?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
I'd stake my reputation as a novelist on it.

sam.png
Hmmm. And you say Markus uses this? That explains a lot.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Lemme see that bottle.

sierra_5343.png

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Oh, it is.

sam.png
If I could really beat that bastard... Stonewall, gimme a Pimm's Cup, would ya?

barman.png
Comin' up, Sam.

sam.png
How much you think I oughta put in here?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Careful! You don't want to overdo it. Too much luck can be dangerous!

sam.png
Hah! There's no such thing as too much! Now stand back.

Markus.png
Come on, already! I'm ready to checkmate!

sam.png
We'll see about that, Mr. Smarty Bigmouth!

Sam is on a roll !

sierra_5367.png

Markus.png
Sonovabitch!

sam.png
Twenty YEARS I've been waiting to say that! Checkmate, checkmate, checkmate!

Markus.png
You are the biggest butthead, Sam Singleton, that I EVER met!

sam.png
CHECKMATE!

Markus.png
You...you...! You can just put this chessboard where the sun don't shine!

sierra_5393.png

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Nice game.

sam.png
Nice game, hell! I was brilliant! Course, I gotta give some of the credit to that oil of yours.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
We can always use a bit of luck...

sam.png
I've been losing to that guy for twenty years! If you ever need a favor, you come to Sam, you hear?

We'll take him up for that. Let's show him the mold :

sierra_5412.png

sam.png
What is this, a clay mold? Interesting. I AM a jeweler, you know. And I owe you one. Would you like me to cast this for you?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
If you can.

sam.png
You got it, Pal. Actually, it'll be a pleasure to get my tools out--first time in years. I been too busy playing that goddamn game.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Great. Thanks.

sam.png
I'll have the bracelet tomorrow. Meet me here.

Well, it's getting late. Gabriel decides to go home for the day...

sierra_5439.png

As Grace is leaving, someone else comes along :

sierra_5447.png

sierra_5452.png

Malia !

Grace-sm.png
Oh? I'm afraid St. George's is closed for the day.

malia.png
I'm not a customer. I'm here to see the owner.

Grace-sm.png
Why don't you just leave your name and number with me, and I'll tell him you stopped by.

malia.png
Listen, if Gabriel is here, he'll want to see me. Is he? Here?

Grace-sm.png
I really couldn't say for certain, but in the morning...

It seems that Gabriel heard the argument...

sierra_5470.png

sierra_5474.png

sierra_5477.png

malia.png
I didn't think I would either.

Gabe-sm.png
Uh, I could show you around a little. It's not much, but...

malia.png
Please, don't. I couldn't focus on much of anything right now.

Gabe-sm.png
Yeah, I know. God, what IS it about you?

malia.png
Just shut up and kiss me.

:yeah:

kiss.gif

Get a room you guys !

sierra_5507.jpg

And a room, they get.

I'm totally sure that Gabriel and Malia will get to live happily ever after once this game is over !

The proper french for cabrit sans cor' would be cabri sans corne. "cabri" is an old-fashioned way of saying "goat" and "sans" is "without". "corne" is "horn", though abbreviating it to "cor'" is rather confusing.

Another great update with absolutely stunning finale.

Now we just have to wait for Gabriel's soul to be sucked dry.

I've got to appreciate how much research the designers did into the VooDoo stuff and how convincingly they can present it to the player.

Yeah, that clay mold puzzle is rather counter-intuitive, but since everything else is so good, it can be forgiven. Love the "blessings"

After playing ,watching the game you're a voodoo specialist yourself. I'm guessing "cor" is either something Jensen unearthed from her voodoo studies, or she made it up herself so that even French people couldn't decipher the meaning.
Also, I got stuck in the bracelet puzzle in this playthrough and in my first playthrough back in the day. I always manage to forget everything about it . Fortunately day 3 has a nice conclusion.

It just gets better and better. :salute:

It's almost impossible to get across the full depth of interaction available in these games, but you are doing a nice job of it. Keep it up.

Actually the clay mold is not all that illogical, if you can't get the bracelet the only other way is to make a copy, it's just a variant of the usual make a copy of the key.
The whole Gabriel pretending to be a priest is much more contrived considering that he didn't get right one thing in the whole blessing stuff.
In fact would have made more sense for a priest to take the bracelet in custody.

Day 4 : A veil of tears.

Chapter 8 Soundtrack :

What da ya know, a dreamless night ! It seems all Gabriel needed was to vent his frustration :D

sierra_5522.png

At the break of dawn, Malia leaves and Grace comes...

sierra_5534.png

This morning there's an awkward silence between these two.

sierra_5563.png

Grace-sm.png
Don't be silly. I just have nothing to say.

Gabe-sm.png
Hmmm. Did you find out anything about that pattern I gave you?

Grace-sm.png
Yeah. I did find something. I checked the micro-fiche at the public library. I found an article about a murder in 1810. The newspaper published part of a pattern found around the body. It looks damn close.

Gabe-sm.png
You're incredible. All that work-

Grace-sm.png
Forget it.

Gabe-sm.png
...Have it your way.

Whoa, Grace sounds pretty pissed. Suddenly, we realize that some creepy dude is standing outside the window...

sierra_5614.png

Grace-sm.png
Yeah! He gives me the creeps! I wish he'd go away.

We can't have him scare away our customers !

sierra_5622.png

The figure outside does not respond. Something tells me he isn't just window-shopping. Oh well, let him stand there if we wants, we'll read the paper :

sierra_5635.png

Gabe-sm.png
I don't believe this! They've closed the case!

Grace-sm.png
What case?

Gabe-sm.png
The Voodoo Murders case! The paper says that the police have learned that the murders were the result of an underworld cartel war, and that the war is over.

Grace-sm.png
That's not good?

Gabe-sm.png
It's ridiculous! What about the killers? And the Voodoo angle, they never got anything on that!

Grace-sm.png
I know you were into it, Gabriel, but if it's over, that's hardly a NEGATIVE. Anyway, if you're that upset, why don't you talk it over with your pal Mosely?

Gabe-sm.png
You don't get it, Grace. Just...forget it, OKAY?

Gabriel decides to check his horoscope, despite his disgust.

sierra_5656.png

It seems this day isn't going to be as good as the night. Now, let's have a look at that old newspaper clipping Grace found :

sierra_5661.png

Gabe-sm.png
The newspaper clipping describes a ritualistic murder in Congo Square. It includes a rough sketch of a pattern found around the body. The sketch is very similar to the reconstructed veve.

1810, huh ? Well, as we've learned from the graphic novel this thing is running deep into the past. I think it's time we talked to Mosely about him closing this damn case...

sierra_5684.png

mosley.png
Yeah, yeah. What is it, ya wanker ?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
You tell me, Mose, I just know what I read in the papers.

mosley.png
Knight. Hate to tell you this, but you're out of a book. The Voodoo Murders case has been closed.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Son-of-a-bitch! How can you just CLOSE it? It's not solved, is it?

mosley.png
Oh, it's 'solved.' Turns out the Chicago Mafia was tryin' to invade local territory--use the Mississippi for drug running now that Florida's so hot.

sierra_5709.png

mosley.png
Word came in this morning that the Chicago group is giving up and pullin' out of New Orleans.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
But that doesn't bring the killers to justice!

mosley.png
Well, the boys upstairs seem to figure it this way--let the slime kill each other. Better the vermin we know than Chicago vermin, I guess. The attitude in the department is that we've just been done a huge favor--and they're probably right.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
What about the local cartel? Are you just gonna let them go?"

mosley.png
At least they're part of US. We'll deal with them over time--always have. New Orleans is pretty clean that way, you know.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Well, that's the illusion, isn't it?

mosley.png
Look, I'm not totally in agreement here, either, but what can I do? These guys are not about to get caught.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Obviously !

mosley.png
I'm disappointed about the book, too. Next big murder case I get, I'll call ya in and we'll do that one up right, okay? In fact, I could probably dig up some old cases, and you could spice 'em up.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
No thanks!

We can't allow this case to be closed !

sierra_5734.png

mosley.png
Look, the department's not interested.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
So. Couldn't you MAKE them interested?

mosley.png
With what? I've got seven bodies and still no leads! The Voodoo angle's worthless, and besides, these people aren't hurtin' anybody but out-of-town drug dealers and hitmen!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
The Voodoo stuff is NOT worthless--it's the key to the whole thing! And these people are dangerous! They need to be stopped!

mosley.png
Okay. You want me to reopen this case, prove what you just said.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
What do you mean?

mosley.png
You need to...

  • ...prove that there's a legitimate Voodoo cult in New Orleans.
  • ...prove that they're a threat.
  • ...get me a lead on the cult.

In other words we must do all the work. Let's start by showing him the newspaper clipping :

sierra_5790.png

mosley.png
Hmmm. This does sound like the same M.O. 1810?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
1810. They killed then, they're killing now. Isn't that proof that they're likely to kill again--that they ARE a threat?

mosley.png
Sure, if there IS a Voodoo cult, they're a threat.

How about that reconstructed veve :

sierra_5801.png

mosley.png
What makes you think this is an accurate reconstruction?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Well--I...borrowed...the partial patterns from your police file and did my own tracing of the pattern at Lake Pontchartrain. An architectural artist reconstructed it for me from the partials.

mosley.png
Really? So this is the whole pattern, huh? That's pretty good work, Knight. But that doesn't prove that this pattern is really connected to Voodoo.

Dammit, we still haven't proved the most important thing, that the cult exists. I guess we really have to infiltrate one of their gatherings. We should see if Sam has casted the bracelet...

sierra_5840.png

sam.png
This piece was a real toughie--for some reason the metal just wasn't setting. I must be outta practice.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Well, it looks good to me. Thanks, Sam.

sam.png
No problem. By the way, I'm heading outta town tonight.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Yeah? Where to?

sam.png
Markus used to tell me that if I ever beat him at chess, he'd take me around the world.

sam.png
The old bastard has enough money stuffed in his mattress to cover the Federal deficit, and he HATES spending a penny of it. I'm gonna enjoy watching him squirm through every mile.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Sounds like fun. Good luck.

sam.png
Are you kidding? Luck is my middle name.

Two old grumpy bastards around the world... sounds great. Let's have a look at the bracelet :

sierra_5860.png

All right, we're getting somewhere. Now we'll have to wait for the professor to finish his research on the veve. In order to pass the time Gabriel heads for Jackson's square...

sierra_5879.png

Hmmm, we bump onto someone familiar :

sierra_5880.png

I wonder what he's up to. We follow him but he's always avoiding us. He also seems to be somewhat ill :

sierra_5898.png

We reach the western part of the square and we find another person we know :

sierra_5908.png

sierra_5917.png

She's not responding...

sierra_5922.png

ghost01.png

What the ...!

ghost02.png

STAY AWAY FROM MALIA GEDDE...

ghost03.png

OR YOU SHALL PAY WITH YOUR LIFE !!!

ghost04.png

And then she disappears into thin air...

sierra_5947.png

That's a really good question. What Malia could possibly have to do with all this ? It's a mystary. Another mystery is why Crash is suspiciously loitering around the square. You know, there is a way we can inspect him without being seen :

sierra_5983.png

sierra_5988.png

sierra_5994.png

sierra_6008.png

sierra_6015.png

Interesting. He went towards the cathedral. We find him sitting there.

sierra_6030.png

Let's see if we can get anything out of him...

sierra_6038.png

crash.png
I'm prayin'. Leave me alone!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Why are you praying?

crash.png
I'm prayin' for my life, Man!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
You look pretty sick. Shouldn't you be in a hospital?

crash.png
A hospital wouldn't do nothin'! Leave me alone!

sierra_6060.png

crash.png
No way, Man! I'm too sick. Go away!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Come on! I HAVE to know what YOU know about these Voodoo people!

crash.png
You don't know nothin' about nothin', Man! You're so far out of it, you wouldn't understand anything--just like that friend of yours, Mosely! Go away!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
I'm NOT like Mosely. I know more than you think I do. I'll believe you!

crash.png
Forget it, Man! It's not worth my breath! I'm too sick to waste my time. Now go away!

Let's show him our voodoo credentials, we present the bracelet :

sierra_6107.png

crash.png
Where did you get that?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Why? Do you know something about it?

crash.png
Know something about it? Look at this!

Crash opens his shirt and reveals a tattoo.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
It's the same--the same snake!

crash.png
It's their sign...the mark of the snake! Without it, they'll never let you get close!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
The sign of the snake.... Right! Your tattoo, my bracelet. Now do you believe that I know SOMETHING about these people?

crash.png
All right. Yeah. You know about them, I...<cough>...I guess.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Will you answer some questions for me now?

crash.png
Okay, I'll talk to you--a little, but make it fast!

sierra_6142.png

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Tell me what you know about the Voodoo in New Orelans.

crash.png
Look, take some advice. Stay away from this Voodoo shit! You don't really want to know, man! Believe me! Do yourself a favor and leave me alone!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
I want to know about the Voodoo Murders.

crash.png
You're on the right track, that's all I can say. I'm not gonna risk my life by talkin' about it, man!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
What is the significance of the snakes ?

crash.png
The eyes! Snake's eyes! Damballah!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Okay. Calm down. I saw you talking to that drummer. What did you tell him?

crash.png
You saw me with the drummer? Nobody's supposed to see! Shit! I blew it again!

sierra_6187.png

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Okay. But you have to tell me everything I want to know.

crash.png
Okay, okay. I was sending a message, man. They have these Rada drummers posted around the Quarter. They see everything, and they report.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Report? How?

crash.png
The drums, man! It's some kinda code.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Tell me what you know about a secret Voodoo hounfour in New Orleans.

crash.png
All right! There's this underground cartel in New Orleans--a Voodoo cartel.

sierra_6204.png

crash.png
There's supposed to be this temple--what you said, a 'hounfour.' That's their headquarters. I heard people say it's underground, somewhere in the French Quarter--I don't know where.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Have you ever been there?

crash.png
No, no, I've never been in it. I'm nobody. A runner. But I saw them once--out at the lake. They became animals, man--beasts! I remember the eyes! <choke> The eyes!

Whoa, crash doesn't sound good...

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Hey, are you okay?"

crash.png
The eyes...the eyes...of the snake!!

Gabe-coat-sm.png
I think I should go get a doctor!

crash.png
Dam...ball..ah! <gasp>

What the hell ?

sierra_6218.png

crash.png
The eyes of the snake! Damballah! <gurgle>

Gabe-coat-sm.png
What snake? Crash?!

sierra_6229.png

:(

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Oh, God! Poor bastard!

We should inform Mosely !

sierra_6444.png

sierra_6450.png

mosley.png
What? What're you talkin' about? I just let him go this morning.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Yeah, well, that turned out to be a brilliant move--though they probably would have gotten him anywhere...

mosley.png
They? You're losin' it, Knight.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
It was the Voodoo cult--they did it!

mosley.png
You're an amateur, so lemme give you some advice. Crash is--was--a junkie. Ya gotta read through the hallucinations, know what I mean? Where's the body, anyway?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
St. Louis Cathedral.

sierra_6468.png

mosley.png
Guess he was tryin' to get a last minute A-train ticket, eh? Poor bastard.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
I think you should go find the body. He was killed by the Voodoo cult. Crash said...

mosley.png
CRASH said? Did he mention pink elephants, too?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Aren't you going to investigate?

mosley.png
Civilians! Did you actually SEE someone kill him?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
No. Actually, I was with him when he died. Could have been poison, though.

mosley.png
Yeah, well, when they get the body in, they'll do a quick autopsy--standard procedure. If it's anything other than an overdose, I'll get a report. But it won't happen. I know these guys. Lock 'em up overnight, and they tend to overdo it the next day.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Your professionalism is astonishing.

Dammit, Mosely just won't listen to us ! Let's head back to Crash and have a closer look, how the hell did he die so suddenly ?

sierra_6240.png

Crash's body is slumped in the pew. What a place for a violent death !
Reluctantly, we move his shirt to check out the tattoo :

sierra_6253.png

We decide to copy it into our scetchbook.

sierra_6259.png

Gabriel feels overwhelmed. He decides that he wouldn't mind some divine help.

sierra_6269.png

priest.png
Do you feel the need for a blessing, Son?

Gabe-coat-sm.png
You wouldn't believe me if I told you.

priest.png
All right. If it will comfort you.

The priest blesses Gabriel through the confessional window.

priest.png
Peace be with you, Son.

Gabe-coat-sm.png
Thank you, Father.

The horrorscope was right, this was one crappy day...

sierra_6284.png

sierra_6287.png

sierra_6299.png

After Grace leaves, he is restless. He picks up the phone...

sierra_6305.png

Gabe-sm.png
It's me. I can't sleep.

malia.png
<sigh> Me neither.

Gabe-sm.png
Can I...?

malia.png
Yes. Come.

Gabriel doesn't need to be told twice...

I just wonder if this game is oldschool enough that you actually can die in it. :M

Anyway, another quality update. :salute:

Yes you can die, but only in 3-4 situations. We haven't encountered one yet, but we're getting close.

At least Jane has already had her Moebius game kickstarted and it's in the vein of Gabriel Knight, so let's hope we'll see some of that old goodness again.

I rewatched GK2 recently...meh. That was terrible. Skip that shit IMO. Terrible actors. I can't imagine what could make Jane write Grace as such a bitch and turn our aryan protagonist into a whiny pussy.

Oh come on man, It's not that bad. I actually replayed it recently. My main main problem with it is the simplification of interactivity for the sake of being cinematic and some crappy pixel hunting, which is much more frustrating in FMV surroundings.

And here, the Graphic Novel ends.

sierra_6334.png

Day 5 : The white flag had been waved.

Chapter 9 Soundtrack :

Yesterday, as Crash was dying from Voodoo-Vader's force-choke, he told us some interesting things:
  • A powerful Voodoo cartel exists in the city. They control all the local underworld activities and their power extends to legitimate business too.
  • The drummers around the city are their agents and they're using the drums to send coded messages.
  • They're supposed to have an underground Temple/Headquarters somewhere in the French Quarter.

Another day begins, yet this time Grace found the Bookshop empty.

    sierra_6339.png

    Gabriel enters shortly afterwards...

    sierra_6341.png

    sierra_6355.png

    Gabe-sm.png
    <yawn> Sure. Great. Why?

    Grace-sm.png
    I'm worried about you.

    Gabe-sm.png
If I were any better, Grace, I'd be dead. Now what's up?

    Grace-sm.png
You got another package this morning. Fed. Ex. from Germany.

    Gabe-sm.png
I was expecting that. Where is it?

    sierra_6372.png

    Gabe-sm.png
The package just 'came open,' huh? How'd you like the journal?

    Grace-sm.png
SOMEONE has to look after you. You're in trouble, in case you don't know it.

    Gabe-sm.png
Yeah, you've been reading my horoscope again, haven't you, Grace?

    Grace-sm.png
Just read the journal carefully, Gabriel. PLEASE.

At that moment the phone rings. Gabriel enthusiastically rushes to get it :

    sierra_6391.png

His enthusiasm somewhat lessens when he realizes it's not Malia but professor Hartridge. Yet it's a call he was expecting with interest...

    sierra_6398.png

    Gabe-sm.png
You did. Wait, slow down.... The Agris? Really? You think that's them?

    sierra_6409.png

    Gabe-sm.png
Damballah, the snake? That's the wavy pattern at the bottom. Okay.

    sierra_6420.png

    Gabe-sm.png
Okay. Okay. Okay. Look, I'll come over as soon as I can. Okay. Relax, Professor! I'm excited too, but you're going to give yourself a heart attack!

Damballah the snake huh ? This is what Crash was mumbling while he was chocking to death. And Ogoun Badagris, the loa of destruction, both parts of the veve. A veve that has been known to appear in San Domingo, Haiti, during the slave revolts two centuries ago. Interesting and dangerous stuff, we'll have to talk to professor Hartridge as soon as possible. Grace thinks so too :

    sierra_6430.png

    Gabe-sm.png
Don't look so worried. No one knows what I'm doing. I'm perfectly safe, and I'm getting some GREAT stuff for the book. Besides, there's something about all this. My dreams...

    Grace-sm.png
    What ABOUT your dreams?

    Gabe-sm.png
Nothing. I'll be careful. I promise.

We better be careful, things are starting to get really strange. That creepy man is still outside watching...

    sierra_5618.png

    Grace-sm.png
He hasn't moved an inch since he showed up.

We decide to forget about him and have a look at the delivery from Germany. Along with the journal, there's also a letter :

    sierra_6670.png

  • Dear Gabriel
Please read the enclosed journal carefully. It might help you understand your family's special obligations and our current predicament.

God be with you, Uncle Wolfgang

We open the diary and we come across a familiar story :

    sierra_6499.png

He reads about Gunter's meeting with a beautiful slave woman, Tetelo, and of Gunter's tormenting urges for her.

    Gabe-sm.png
    Poor bastard!

He reads of their physical union and passion, and of Gunter's investigation into the murders. The victims were all crew members on a certain slaving expedition to Africa, it seems.

The second-to-the-last entry describes Gunter's plan to set a trap for the coven committing the murders. He'd found the name of one of the surviving members of the crew--a man now living in the West Indies....

Gunter has spread a false rumor that the man is returning to Charleston. He, himself, will impersonate the sailor and allow himself to fall into the hands of the coven. Naturally, Gunter has arranged for able-bodied assistants to follow and attack the coven before they can do him harm.

    Gabe-sm.png
    Ballsy son-of-a-bitch, wasn't he?

Gabriel turns to the last page of the Journal :

Gabriel is shaken. The similarities between Gunther's story, his nightmares and his current situation here in New Orleans, are unsettling. Nevertheless, he feels that he has to keep on pressing with his investigation.
It's time we learned more about those rada-drums that the cult is using to spread their messages :

    sierra_6546.png

    Grace-sm.png
Rada drums? Sure. I don't think we have any books on that topic in the shop, but I'll contact our suppliers. Assuming any of them will extend you any credit.

    Gabe-sm.png
    Tell them it's an emergency.

    Grace-sm.png
Uh-huh. I can see where a Rada Drum book would be incredibly urgent.

Reluctantly we also have a look at the paper :

    sierra_6561.png

The Shadow upon you is no longer reversible.

Wonderful. With that, we decide to leave the shop and head for the unviersity.

    sierra_6579.png

    sierra_6583.png

Hmm ? Hartridge seems strangely silent...

    sierra_6585.png

    sierra_6588.png

    sierra_6590.png

And now we know why... He's dead !

    sierra_6596.png

    sierra_6604.png

DAMN ! The cricle is closing fast around Gabriel. We must find what Hartridge learned !

    sierra_6614.png

    sierra_6628.png

It's not much, but it's something. Gabriel notifies the campus authorities and heads for Mosely.

    sierra_6698.png

Huh. One of the rada-drummers is now watching the Police station. We head quickly to Mosely's office :

    sierra_6716.png

    sierra_6735.png

    mosley.png
Oh, Christ! You're not gonna to start this again!

    Gabe-coat-sm.png
Just listen! This guy's name is Hartridge. He was a professor in African studies at Tulane. Yesterday, I went to see him about the Voodoo Murders case. He agreed to do some research for me! He calls me up this morning, tells me he's onto something big, and when I get over there, the guy's dead!

    mosley.png
You know, you're really gettin' your ass in a sling over this thing, Knight.

    Gabe-coat-sm.png
It's not about ME! Look, Hartridge's death looked just like Crash's. I'm telling you, they were both murdered--and by the same people who did the Voodoo Murders!

    mosley.png
Did either Crash or this new guy have their hearts ripped out?

    Gabe-coat-sm.png
    No.

    mosley.png
Then there's nothin' to link either to the Voodoo Murders' M.O. Besides that, the case is closed, Knight.

    Gabe-coat-sm.png
    But it's murder !

    mosley.png
If the coroner's report asks for a homicide investigation on either of these guys, fine! But it's not gonna be related to the Voodoo Murders case unless WE find damn good reason to do so!

    Gabe-coat-sm.png
But I'M the link to the Voodoo Murders case, don't you see?

    mosley.png
Look, if I were you, I wouldn't repeat that to anyone, because if I weren't an old friend of yours, I MIGHT take you seriously and lock you up. As it is, maybe you should start keeping your mouth shut and not involve other people with this shit, if you think it's so dangerous.

Maybe Hartridge's notes will change his mind :

    sierra_6781.png

    mosley.png
    Yeah? What about them?

    Gabe-coat-sm.png
They confirm that the pattern from the murders is of African origin.

    mosley.png
Really? That's incredible, isn't it? Somethin' like that showin' up here?

    Gabe-coat-sm.png
It's been 'here' for quite some time, so it seems.

    mosley.png
I'm impressed. Okay, you've convinced me. The murders were done by a legitimate Voodoo cult. But you still need to get me a lead on the cult.

Yeah we need a lead, but we have nothing at the moment. Hey, maybe the Voodoo museum could help us with Hartridge's notes !

    sierra_6815.png

    sierra_6818.png

    This doesn't look good...

    sierra_6825.png

    sierra_6834.png

    WHAT THE ...!

    sierra_6844.png

    sierra_6849.png

    sierra_6854.png

    FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

    sierra_6861.png

    sierra_6872.png

Let's try to pull the damn thing off !

    sierra_6875.png

    Nothing works !

    sierra_6884.png

    sierra_6887.png

Ahhh, at last, a death scene. I really like those, you know.

    sierra_6890.png

    We sure can.

    sierra_6916.png

This time we somehow recall that we read that snakes respond to sound and light...

    sierra_6928.png

    sierra_6937.png

As the ventilation fan sets into motion, the python loosens up a bit...

    sierra_6940.png

    sierra_6943.png

And guess who suddenly shows up.

    sierra_6947.png

    sierra_6952.png

    DrJohn.png
He did? I AM sorry. The museum is closed today, you see, and we were not expecting visitors.

    Gabe-coat-sm.png
And you just set it loose to roam around here ?!

    DrJohn.png
If you will excuse me, Mr. Knight, I must go look for him. He IS incredibly valuable.

    Gabe-coat-sm.png
You don't need to ask twice. I'm outta here! By the way, you might want to lock your door next time you're 'closed.'

    DrJohn.png
Not a bad idea. Good-bye, Mr. Knight.

What a fucking bastard. We head back for the bookstore to take a breather.

    sierra_6980.png

    Gabe-sm.png
    Who, me? Nothing. Why?

    Grace-sm.png
You're kind of a pale green color. Come here.

    Gabe-sm.png
    Pale green, you say? Charming.

    Grace-sm.png
    What's that on your face?

    Gabe-sm.png
    I'm sure you'll tell me.

    Grace-sm.png
Looks like a sparkly or something. Got it.

    Gabe-sm.png
I love it when you pick stuff off my face, Grace.

    Grace-sm.png
    Hmph. Well, excuse me.

    A sparkly or something ? Interesting. Let's have a look :

    sierra_7006.png

We grab it with the twizers and guess what we find... a snake scale ! We use the magnifying glass to take a closer look :

    sierra_7020.png

    Gabe-sm.png
It's hued with purples and greens. It matches the scale from Lake Pontchartrain !

At last we found our lead on the cult ! Dr. John and the Voodoo museum !

    sierra_7028.png

Well, it was kinda obvious, but this is REAL evidence. Next stop: Mosely.

    sierra_7051.png

    mosley.png
Is this common? Do they all look alike?

    Gabe-coat-sm.png
Not at all. They're both constrictor scales and the coloring is the same. A python's coloring is quite individualistic.

    mosley.png
    A PYTHON?

    Gabe-coat-sm.png
That's right. Hardly an indigenous snake to Louisiana. Somehow, some way, the Voodoo museum's python was at the scene of the Lake Pontchartrain murder.

    mosley.png
Well. I'd call that a lead all right. It certainly suggests certain lines of inquiry at the museum. Not bad work, Knight.

    sierra_7062.png

    Gabe-coat-sm.png
And don't forget about the murders with the same M.O. from 1810 and professor Hartridge's notes. I've already proven that the cult exists and that it's a threat !

    mosley.png
Okay. I'll reopen the case. I hate to admit it, but you've done some pretty good detective work here, Knight.

    Gabe-coat-sm.png
Well, you know what they say. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

    mosley.png
<ahem>, point taken. Glad I could inspire you.

    ...

    mosley.png
I'll check around the department, but I have a feeling I'm on my own. In fact, I'd better lock up this office just in case I step on a few toes. Come on.

    sierra_7086.png

Now that this on Mosely's able hands, Gabriel can finally sleep peacefully !

    sierra_7099.png

    sierra_7104.png

After Grace leaves, Gabriel picks up the phone and dials Malia's number...

    ...

    ...

    ...no one answers.

    sierra_7112.png

I guess Gabriel won't sleep peacefully after all.

I wonder why Jensen never wrote a standalone graphic novel. The short ones that where shipped with GK1 and with GK3 are both pretty awesome. Not only she chose the artists well, but everything works great.

Actually, she would have probably have done better in that field than she did with her novels(Dante's Equation and the GK adaptations).

Oh BTW, It's safe to assume that Gunther hanged himself after writing that last diary entry and sending it to Germany.
