One of the biggest announcements from GamesCom 2014 was Silent Hills, a collaboration between Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and film director Guillermo del Toro. This game may never actually be released, though.

During a panel discussion at the San Francisco Film Festival last night, del Toro reportedly said that Silent Hills was cancelled:

Silent Hills' announcement last summer was accompanied by the release of a short demo called P.T. ("Playable Teaser"). The Fox Engine-powered demo let players explore a home infested with supernatural monsters. It closes with a trailer for Silent Hills starring Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead fame.

Even if you don't believe that Guillermo del Toro said the game's cancelled, you should be concerned that Konami has decided to pull P.T. from the PlayStation Store. A new notice on P.T.'s website says that the game will no longer be available for download after April 29th.

Silent Hills's apparent cancellation isn't because people disliked P.T.. The teaser was widely praised, in fact. Gamers downloaded it over a million times by September, too, so there was clearly interest in a new Silent Hill game.

Instead, the cancellation is more likely due to Hideo Kojima's imminent departure from Konami. Kojima, the director of Silent Hills, will be departing the company afterMetal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain launches in September. Although Konami was quick to assure gamers that the Metal Gear series will continue after Kojima leaves, they were mum about the fate of Silent Hills.

Silent Hills will be the third Guillermo del Toro-helmed video game to be cancelled. His horror game inSANE was scuttled by THQ three years back, presumably due to that publisher's financial troubles. In 2006, he tried to make a Left 4 Dead-like game with Terminal Reality called Sundown. Here's hoping he has better luck with future gaming projects.

Once again, a horror game that Del Toro was working on got canceled. Fuck and PT showed such promise of an interesting story too...

So yes to more Metal Gear cutscene garbage but no to Silent Hill? Haha, Konami.

Why does this retarded company hate money and Silent Hill so much? Let's not forget they refuse to sell PC versions of SH on Steam and GOG too, so they can only be found secondhand or pirated. As community mods have shown with widescreen hacks and fixes; they could easily update and re-release SH1-4 in a collection, and make a killing on Steam if they wanted to. Do they not realize the huge cult following these games still have? Sadly there seems to be some kind of braindead spite going on with that company or they really are that clueless.

All they have to do is announce a new 2D Castlevania game and cancel that too, then their fuckup will be complete.

Yes, because that's totally Konami's fault. It's not like that shit is Kojima's calling card or anything.

Silent Hill doesn't make money.

Good. Let Silent Hill rest in peace.

It's obvious nobody's capable of doing anything interesting with the SH lore - just recycling the same iconic enemies from SH1/2 over and over again like the entire series is stuck in some sisyphean purgatory. The original game was stitched together from a variety of psychological horror and supernatural tropes so there's nothing stopping an ambitious developer from doing the same with a new IP.

It doesn't make money anymore because Konami's been consistently treating the IP like garbage since Team Silent broke up for good after SH4. They handed the games off to nobody third party devs who had no idea what the fuck they were doing and just constantly rehashed the plot of SH2 over and over again (OH WOW I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY AS ANOTHER GUY WITH AMNESIA AND A DARK PAST WHO'S HOUNDED BY A DEMONIC FIGURE WITH A WEIRD THING ON HIS HEAD CARRYING A COMICALLY OVERSIZED WEAPON). Then for the HD collection; which was a great chance to revive interest in the franchise and draw interest from new fans who never played the originals, they made the wise decision to leave the release to another nobody dev team who specializes in fucking mobile games, with an incomplete build of the games because they fucking lost the complete builds they had; and headed by an egotistical fuckwad who was convinced he knew the series better than the original creators of the fucking games and tried to change everything because "NEW FANS WON'T LIKE BAD ACTING". Yeah, because what new fans really want are fucking anime voice actors delivering stilted and over-the-top performances instead. They then released a wonky, barely finished mess, and lost whatever good will they still had from their fans in the process.

This had a chance of working, but now it won't happen because Konami managed to piss off the one developer they still had left who was bringing them in money. They burned the series down on their own. Might as well just let it die in peace.

I'm glad. The game could have been good, but after how Konami let someone rape the dead corpses of Silent Hill 2 & 3 with that 'HD Collection' its obvious they don't give a single fuck about the franchise.

Silent Hill doesn't make money.

Maybe not as much as Resident Evil tank sims but the earlier games sold well enough with people still playing them today (which I recently did as well) and how many fan sites of the series are still going strong? If the IP was of no interest and couldn't make loot, we wouldn't have two hollywood movies either. Plus as Amn mentioned, we got that HD abomination collection cash-in.

If you honestly don't believe Konami updating their PC ports - which fans have done with simple patches - then throwing them on Steam with front page promotion wouldn't make them some Jim Profit, then you are mental.

Someone pointed out that the demo was most likely just a tech demo for the Fox Engine. It was never intended to be a Silent Hill game

Makes sense to me.

Also, tens of millions viewing youtubers playing the demo, yet only a million or so downloading it? Probably not a good sign.

Well, if Kojima and Del Toro really want to make a horror game they can directly collaborate after Kojima leaves and do whatever they want. I think both of them together can easily find enough funding for a AAA game.

Was a demo which, at the end, revealed the development of the game. Probably had a plot relationated with the final game. The demo is available on PS4 until Thursday.

---------------------------------

Even if a Silent hill game as the four originals will never come back, a new installment of the series made by Hideo Kojima and Kojima productions, with the collaboration of Guillermo del Toro and Norman reedus and with a high AAA budget was a very hyping project. Fuck you Konami.
