Actually, I am happy that they are allowing you to "build" you faction. A lot of people playerd Civs only with their nationalities, even SMAC followed this pattern a bit, with Hive-Chinese, University - Russians, Pirates- Scandinavia etc pattern, only a few factions avoided it. With affinities and stuff maybe they will step away from CivV bane - streamlined build orders for all civs.
Most of all I am interested in this phrase:
Beyond Earth will use the same one-unit-per-tile combat system we’ve seen in Civ 5, but its upgrade system is intended to be deeper and more flexible due to a multi-tiered tree system and - again - to allow you to control its evolution rather than simply progress from spearmen to muskets to riflemen.
If they will manage to somehow fix utterly broken "1 unit per tile" then the game may have potential, otherwise, it'll just repeat CivV failure.

Oh dear. This is deeply troubling. I thought the world forgot that CivRevolution existed?

If the world had forgotten, it would be a bad thing. The atrocities of the past must be remembered, in order to serve as a warning to future generations. Like the Holocaust or the Rwandan genocide, we must NEVAR FORGET Civ: Revolution. :salute:

I don't really thing they can go near anywhere Alpha Centauri, especially when it comes to being a dark, gritty game. I mean them Secret Projects. Not in todays AAA gaming...

This is just going to be some Civ 5 reskinned with space and aliens. Not that I don't like Civ 5 but I don't really think they are capable of creating a new SMAC-ish experience.

Yeah, the influence of Alpha Centauri will be apparent, but it's in winks and nods—it's an homage to that game—this game really is meant to be our version of the place that game sat when it came out. It's our version of this idea of mankind in space, and we started with that perspective of the fiction and the narrative, and also of Civ V. Civ V has enjoyed a huge success. There are lots of parts of that game that people really like, and we're building on the Civ V technology, so we took a lot of influences from that as well. If you're a Civ V player, you'll feel right at home.

Another game that looks like CiV mod, this time because it literally is one. Excitement level: 0

i thought civ5 was worse than civ4, i thought nu-xcom was much worse than the original and i think this will definitly be worse than alpha centauri...

...but i enjoyed civ5 (with G&K mind you, didnt play vanilla), i enjoyed nu-xcom (even moreso with enemy within) and i think the chance i ll enjoy this is fairly high as well.

glad its not just Civ 6 which i was fearing the announcement to be about.

and i m already digging that "puritiy" faction thing they mention - hopefully they have cool looking uniforms to go with ze wunderwaffens.

Aliens in SMAC AC landed several turns later than human factions

Didn't they show up, in like, seven or ten turns? They also came with additional colony pods, better tech and were generally quite imba. They really work better in the Planetfall mod, where you can have the full 14 factions so they weren't as unbalanced.

This is actually good news.

2) They're actually doing the one thing I really wanted to see in 4X for a long time. That is a proper non-interstellar space 4X with a (few) system-sized scale unlike the galaxy scale 4X common since MOO. So shit like wars over resources on moons, asteroids and other fun things only Aurora 4X so far allowed will be available.

Indeed. I would love to see stuff with that scale, but I had a feeling we would have to wait for Beyond Beyaan to attempt to do something like that.

I'm confused, is there an SMAC game with a planetfall mod? The only one I am seeing is a Civ 4 one.

Sadly, this is likely be the case, especially seeing how it's a Firaxis game. A strong hint was the noticeable shift of tone between UFO and XCOm - from a relatively gritty, scary atmosphere to comic book level silliness combined with the WoW big-pauldrons-style art design. Nope, no grittiness in Civ5:BE.

I totally see alien units that are going to be barbarians reskinned with generic alien design instead of the creepy looking things like the worms.
I totally see the diferrence between the paths being just lazy +1 here and -1 there.
I totally see the planet consciousness being reduced to a victory condition instead of WOAH... the fucking planet is talking with me and he isn't happy.
This smells like safe, sanitized and generic version of Alpha Centaury.

Funny thing is that the original UFO had a 90s comics art design

I hear that a lot but except for the intro the ingame art wasn't really all that comicsy. Maybe it's because at that time the graphics wasn't as sophisticated to allow for such nuances but it always seemed to me the game was done by Gollop and the intro was rustled up and slapped to it by Microprose without much thinking.

The Guile soldiers and that first armor you make are pretty early '90s comic booky

You know what's really original: gorilla power armor. where the fuck did that come from

A list of features:
  • There will be Eight factions
  • Leader: Daoming Sochua - A explorer that represents the Pan Asian co-operative
  • Leaders no longer bundled with Factions (Civilizations)
  • Units will still comply to the One Unit per Hex system introduced in Civ 5
  • There will also be extensive Unit Customization that you can unlock
  • Purity units: Flying Fortresses
  • harmony units: Alien Calvary
  • Satellites project coverage across the orbital layer, and this coverage doesn't overlap with other satellites. Securing coverage works on a first-come, first-serve basis
  • However, once you have a satellite in the air it is by no means permanent. Its orbit will degrade over time, and it will eventually crash on the planet below, sometimes leaving behind recoverable salvage. Satellites can also be pulled out of orbit manually or shot down by other players
  • The tech tree is non-linear, instead you will pick branched to go down
  • techs : Advance Satellites, Geoscoping,Terraforming.
  • Tech branches: Chemistry, Ecology, Engineering,
  • Affinity works on a global level from the very first turn to the very last.
  • You strengthen your affinity by doing quests or finding objects from expedition sites or by researching certain technologies.
  • Harmony embraces genetics and alien life forms on the planet and tries to integrate with the planet. If you start down this path your military units will become faster, heal quicker, and take on a Predator-esque appearance
  • Purity is about maintaining the glory of old earth and the tradition.
  • Supremacy takes a cybernetic post human approach
  • Victory Conditions: Harmony - Awaken a semi-sentient super organism within the planet and reach a new level of consciousness
  • Victory Conditions: Purity - Terraform the alien planet into a mirror of Earth and relocate Earth’s populace to this new Eden(Gs) by building a warpgate
  • Victory Conditions: Supermacy - Embrace cybernetic augmentation, then return to Earth by building a warpgate and "free" the people from their bodies
  • Victory Conditions: Contact - Discover evidence of intelligent life and construct a means to establish first contact
  • Purity player tries to push away the alien, they try to make the planet more like Earth, they try to avoid conflict with the alien life forms by building massive defences, by being tough and very hard to kill
  • Supremacy player is very finesse oriented. It's going to be about building units and putting them in a geometry that lets them harmonise with each other. You have units that are very specialised, but if put in the right places relative to others, you get a lot of buffs that way
  • you're not going to get all the technologies in a single game
  • Multiplayer: Up to 8 players can compete for dominance of a new alien world

Sounds like there's more SMAC in this bitch than it seemed at first. I'd rather they'd come up with something original.

They probably going to try too hard to find something original and screw up big time. While I prefer original ideas too, I want to hope this game gets a bit near to SMAC. Even that means they copy cat everything.
Alpha Centuri with a better UI?

Hm, factions lack the Corporate and the UN, seems like.
