Looks like October is going to be a busy month for RPG fans, as yet another anticipated title hits beta. This time it's Serpent in the Staglands, whose beta is set to be released on October 11th, as explained in the game's latest Kickstarter update. As usual, awesome Darklandsy animated GIFs abound.

We’re very excited to announce that we’ll be releasing the beta to specific backer tiers next weekend, so put on your Spicer boots, grab a torch, and get ready for some adventuring. The initial beta will be for Windows and Mac and will include all the main features in the game to be tested. These maps will have the (beta-stage) version of questing, encounters, town folk, and battles we’ve set up for testing.

It will be primarily low level content for the first grade of skills/spells and aptitude abilities, and we’ll be updating the beta down the road with the second grade of skills/spells for a new content area. We’re aiming to not spoil any of the main quest pick-ups in this combat beta, so we’ve changed certain NPCs and removed some random special encounters. Bandits, Iele gangs, flying imps, possessed children, Padurii and more are all awaiting a beating.

We’ve set up some additional information on gameplay specifics on the game site here you can check out. The forums have been set up with a few specific pages for bugs/suggestions from testers as well, so sign up there to give any feedback, as it will be a hub for general communication.

The night/day system will be included in the beta areas, and will affect a few things including change what enemies dwell in certain areas (bandits during the day could be replaced with a coven at night). Random encounters will also be included in overworld-map travel. These have some pretty heavy quest elements later on in the game that we’ll introduce in the second stage of the beta, but for now are limited to battle encounters.

We will be setting up the beta for download on either platform and will email all the beta backers and paypal backers of that tier with where and how to download. Looking forward to next weekend!
Check out the full update for a few samples of Staglands' soundtrack. And don't forget to vote the game up on Steam Greenlight so we can get the beta on Steam!

Me want.

Music is a bit so-so though. Really like the second track, but the first and third feels a bit too 'march'y for the game style.

It looks good. I hope they have some sort of highlighting for items though. Been looking manually for loot in WL2 for the last couple of weeks which is ok, part of the no hand holding vibe. But Serpents grainy art style (which I do find aesthetically pleasing, don't get it twisted) makes me think it will be a pain in the arse if there is no highlight effect of some sort to show up what is loot-able.

Do all codexers from the campaign get into the beta, or just those who pledged a lot?

Sawyer better find a hiding spot for this is gonna hit hard. Years of talking down and scolding anything that's not The One And Only Divine Design of His ConsHoliness, about to be transformed into a hundred thousand unlubricated barbed giant fists of justice slowly making their way towards his asshole and once the contact is made, there will be no mercy between the rapid push and pulls such that not even the the most hardcore anal pornstar with the loosest asshole could stand a moment of it. The soft tissue of rectum will become a bloody mash and feel like the instant burn of lava when a deep rock excavation hits into a base of molten rock except this will not be over in an instant.

Looking at the GIF above me, I am pretty sure this game's combat is going to receive many of the same complaints that PoE's has.

RTWP will always suck but a game can be good despite it, POE's controversy was that they decided to drastically change all the underlying systems in ways that anger old nerds (like me).

Then again, that's also the danger of invoking spiritual successor status. Serpent can do whatever they want because it's a brand new series with aesthetic elements that inspire nostalgia, not something advertised as a direct follow-up.

MicoSelva Disregard my previous (now deleted) reply. It looks like beta access is only limited to specific (higher) KS tiers. It will be up for Whalenought_Joe to decide whether top Codex backers will get it as well; it wasn't promised during our fundraiser.

Joe said this back in August:

We wanted to extend the invite to the vertical slice playtest which we'll be doing soon, prior to the beta which you'll all be getting.

:greatjob:

Been a while since I heard that said by anyone. And there's news posts that contain the word "yet another".

Truly these are the promised days. Thank you, based Kickstarter God! (and subsequent general resurface of interest in the genre)
