I'll have a look at it next week. I think your current above head bit could get messy as well, although we'll see.

It definitely feels weird, that's for sure. Not completely against the idea, however.

Looking gorgeous Whalenought_Joe. Why the over-the-head selection bracket as opposed to selection circles underfoot? Not enough pixels for circles?

Thanks! I think those have been in since 2.0 — we did that for a few reasons, mainly to be cleaner and less obtrusive. The circles were really heavy for the small unit sizes, and with the new ground terrain we didn't like the options of letting the circles get obstructed all the time or having them clip above everything (made it look like units were floating when there is so much foliage depth they are walking through). In large number combat encounters, like the 15 dog pack fight outside Lumen Targ, the circles were visually getting more cluttered than we'd like. With the bracket we were able to have the bracket itself and the entire character below be clickable, which also seemed more intuitive for targeting and selecting. So besides familiarity, there weren't a lot of reasons to keep them as they were, but we could revise with any beta feedback.

OTOH, IIRC, Darklands managed without any sort of unit indicators (besides active targeting).

Yeah I have to admit, I never had a problem with circles or those squares beneath units feet. Below unit selection just feels right.

Might have to make a video to show how BG1 handles them or something.

I really like the solid < > selection, this is a really good suggestion. I don't see circles working with the art style though.

I've had issues with the title of the game, but I'm kinda curious because it looks great. Eh, I can live without TB as long as the combat isn't like in Darklands, although I hope the character creation system is as involved.

Char creation is not as heavy as Darklands, I'd say, it's- pick race, dump stat points, pick racial bonus. But there are a fuckload of spells and abilities to pick. Combat is RTwP but more manageable, because you have abilities that can be set to fire on certain conditions, like use after 3 hits etc.

What the hell is a staglands?

It's the name of a place.

I like the title, it sounds like the name of some satiric medieval parable in a pamphlet illustrated with woodcuts.

Almost as good as Rodent in the Mattlands.

Selection markers look fine to me, as do the ones Zed suggested.

Always hated big ugly circles, so hat's off for ditching 'em.

I dunno, I thought the title was pretty good. Staglands immediately made me think of a somewhat open forest, the kind where you could, well, hunt for stags. The serpent part, coupled with the visuals and info about the setting, immediately gave me the idea of not an actual serpent, but some kind of demonic corruption. Then again I am not a native speaker, so maybe it does sound goofy for other people.

So if I understand correctly, this is a RtWP BG/Darklands inspired RPG with class-less character progression and the option to create or recruit up to 5 party members.

Colour me interested. At least the "being a God - but whoops I lost my Godness" hook seems interesting. Like the old-school looking graphics too.
Has anyone actually played the game yet?

That's because you're not a Darklands fan.
The way I see it, this style is reminiscent to Darklands's way of doing it.
Not every fuckin game should have selection circles a la Baldur's Gate :)

It also raises the question is the player the serpent or the antagonist who trapped the player.
