Primer is a slow burn and don't expect to love it instantly. But don't be surprised when you start looking up FAQs to explain each of the various time loops and how its actually even more convoluted than you thought it was

Andromeda Strain - one of the few hard sci-fi movies out there. I don't know about its assumptions, it is just a realistic portrayal of a first contact with non-sentient life form.
Its just one of my favourite movies so I need to recommend it.

Well this isn't really a "scifi" list more a very particular sub-genre that I am fascinated by, but you mentioned Coherence so:

Movies that deal with doppel-ganger issues and (often) time-travel:

    -Coherence
    -Primer
    -Triangle
    - +1
    -Time Crimes

The first 3 are EXCEPTIONAL imo. +1 deals with the same theme, issues, eeriness but the setting is a drunk college party and tone is lighter, so I'm not sure it belongs on the list. Time Crimes is also good but doesn't give me the same eerie sensation. I consider Coherence, Primer, and Triangle all spritually connected and if you like one I think you will like the others.

I watched Time Lapse last night, which is a well executed time travel film but doesn't actually deal with doppel-ganger issues since only information is being relayed through time. Still very good and I recommend. Like the earlier movies I mentioned it avoids time travel pitfalls, everything makes sense at the end of the day.

I am fascinated by time travel and doppelgangers separately and its intriguing that they seem to coalesce so well. Would like to be recommended movies in a similar vain.

I pity anyone relying on films for their Sci-Fi fix.
The good ones are just too few and far in between.

It's like trying to filter food out of fucking thin air - not even landwhales can accomplish that.

If you consider this an "interesting assumption" then you can practically recommend the entire science fiction omnibus. Andromeda Strain is indeed amazing but there are many similar movies like Phase IV for example, or West World, or the Stepford Wifes etc ..

These are movies with premises I find interesting, but some of the movies aren't that interesting themselves:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

    The Discovery (2017)
    Abres los ojos (1997)
Back to the Future I, II, III (1985, 1989, 1990)
    Blade Runner (1982)
    Her (2013)
    The Final Cut (2004)
    Twelve Monkeys (1995)
    The Adjustment Bureau (2011)
    Demolition Man (1993)
    The Lobster (2015)
    Total Recall (1990)
    Dredd (2012)

So basically it's like trying to filter good RPGs, good games, good TV shows, good books, good etc. etc. etc.

    Especially on the Kodex.

Metropolis (1927) made the, depressingly accurate I suspect, assumption that the first role of an indistinguishable from human android would be as a sex bot.

The Quiet Earth - Everyone is dead except the protagonist. Don't watch the trailer first, watch the whole movie. There's a censored version on youtube.

A literal bug flitting around a office is swatted by a bureaucrat into a machine and creates a figurative bug, causing the arrest of the wrong man. As for the issue of whether Brazil is SF, the genre includes not only speculation about scientific and technological developments but also about political and sociological developments, and Brazil fits in nicely with the dystopian branch of SF.

To propose another film that hasn't been mentioned yet: THX 1138, the first film directed by George Lucas. Starring Robert Duval as a titular drone in a dystopian, underground society where emotions are repressed by the mandatory consumption of pharmaceuticals. His female roommate eventually halts not only her own but also his consumption of the drugs, giving rise to illicit emotions (and sexual desire). Also features a good performance from Donald Pleasence as a stalker-ish would-be roommate, and the best prison break in all of film.

The first and forth episodes of the first season are definitely worth a watch and work on their own as a full movie. There are several extended wordless scenes following strange machinery or medical procedures, daring you to deduce their grisly purpose before revealing the insane payoff. The whole thing provokes a kind of morbid fascination.

It is. It's also the reason I refuse to use iris recognition technology.

Pontypool. Single-setting disaster/sci-fi. Describing its unique assumption is a spoiler so I recommend watching it without doing research.
You should watch I Origins. :D

Here a few more films that are from the golden era and very enjoyable

    Demon Seed

    Brainstorm

And I also threw in Flatliners (1990) - I got to watch this again myself, it was a quite good when I saw it 20 years ago

Oh hey, I just realized that no body mentioned The Terminator yet. Well there it is.

Yup. Speakin of which, are there any other scifi horror creature flicks that come remotely close to these two in terms of quality? Only one I'm aware of is Cronenberg's The Fly. If anyone knows of others I'd love to hear about them.

    The Black Hole?

It's considered quite badly by many critics but I always liked it.

Paycheck? Engineer accepts loadsa money in exchange for working on a secret project with a mandatory memory wipe afterwards, except that instead of a wad of cash he bequeathes himself and envelope with assorted knicknacks. Turns out the secret project was a machine allowing one to see the futute, and he's been using it to plan out in advance an elaborate plan destroying it by using the right item at the right time despite forgetting what goes when. Interesting premise, somewhat shit execution starring Ben Affleck but works as a popcorn movie.

The Man from Earth is not really sci-fi but the premise certainly is interesting and sci-fi-ish.

The action consists almost entirely of dialogue between professors from different fields who got together for the retirement party of one of them. At one point, the guy being celebrated makes a rather wild claim about his past and how he might be, let's say, different. I won't go into other details because it would spoil the fun in case someone actually wants to watch this.

Edit: Missed J1M's post above that mentioned this, sorry.

In this case, since somebody already mentioned the Terminator, I'm going to add Predator. :)

Oh, and maybe Black Mirror? It's a TV show actually but each episode is self contained so you could treat them as short films. Not really that great but has some funny and, occasionally, interesting ideas. I would start with the Christmas Special in season 2 since it's the longest, almost movie-like and is one of the better episodes.
