So one of the heroines has an ending where she gets a lesbian harem and plots to conquer the world to expand that harem and is pretty gay throughout.

Any reason to play it beyond that?

It's a jrpg. It's not worth playing by default.

For this specific title, no I dont think so. My brother downloaded and played this in the past but I feel no urge to try it. The thing feel soulless to me.

Amazing game, definitely worth playing. I recommend playing as either Blue or T260G for your first time. The way the stories unfold for some of the other characters is somewhat awkward. Not bad per se, but not representative of the game in general. They've got unique twists to how they work that make them different from the others. Blue's story is pretty straightforward while still being somewhat open, and T260G has a good mix too. And they'll force you to become accustomed to at least 2 of the 6 or so character types.

    As for specific reasons...

Character growth system: Different for each of the 4 different races. Monsters change form depending on abilities they've absorbed and what forms those abilities suit best; all their stats are based entirely on their current form, save for a moderate hp bonus. By contrast, mecs also absorb abilities from enemies, but those abilites have no effect on their stats, which are based entirely on their equipment. Different mecs have different base equipment hardwired onto them to give them certain base stats and abilities, but otherwise mecs can equip anything. For example, you might equip a mec with 4 swords to boost it's strength and quickness, or 4 pieces of armor to boost it's defenses, or 4 rocket launchers to boost other stats... as well as having 4 rocket launchers worth of ammo. Humans learn skills and gain stats gradually through battle; although melee skills are learned during battle in moments of inspiration, which are especially common against stronger foes or in dire situations. Gun and magic skills are learned after combat. Mystics acquire stats and skills in yet another way.

Open world: Most of the world is open to most characters most of the time. You'll generally have certain areas you need to go to progress the story with any given character, while other areas are still accessible, but simply offer the area itself as it's reward; whatever loot happens to be there, as opposed to any plot significance. Though some characters have sidequest type things as far as being able to recruit certain characters in certain places. And there are exceptions as well- mecs cannot learn magic, and therefore have no reason or permission to enter either of the labyrinths in Omble. If you go there as T260G your party will enter without you, if you go there as someone else with mecs in your party, the mecs stay behind.

Overall I'd say the best feature of the game is how interconnected everything feels. Different recruitable characters have their own backstories and sometimes interact with eachother. So one encounter with a character might play out quite differently if you have a certain party member along for the ride. Character plots often intersect with either other character plots or with side stories- Emelia gets one of the 4 runes before doing pretty much anything else for example, as a part of her story, even though she wasn't on an active quest to find them and has nothing to do with them overall. Her story simply intersected with that part of the game world so it got worked into the plot. Speaking of Emelia, if you need another reason on par with lesbian dominatrix hero; Emelia gets to play dressup a lot, including a bunny-girl outfit.

It's a very interesting game, very original.

That being said, it feels very shoddy most of the time and very bizarre. It's the kind of game where there's a million flaws, but there's something that hooks you into wanting to play more.

It should feel shoddy, the bloody fools making it ended up cutting a lot out (including an entire character.) One thing Square was noted for during the PSX era was making incomplete and somewhat shoddy games (see Xenogears.)

I should probably mention I love the SaGa series dearly.

Another saga fan here, the series have a certain apeal and quality that is unique and feels much more western than most modern wrpgs.

I suggest going for romancing saga for ps2 first it is a much more complete title and you can always go back to frontier later.

I tried out Unlimited Saga for the PS2. It seemed like the game had potential, and certain mechanics seemed interesting - definitely intend to come back to the game eventually.

Anyone that played it have any thoughts?

Never played the game? You should give it a try just for Asellus's story. Much GIRL POWAH to be had. By which I mean you devour people's souls and eventually return home to become a tyrant in a bitchin' outfit.

    SFasellus.jpg

    Err, not that one though.

    Apr 30 2007 09-12-55PM.jpg

I think it's closer to this one.

Oh, also, fucking soundtrack man. Holy fuck.

Actually fuck that. Any game can have a nice track for battles. This is the shit that plays when you're just sitting around in (one of the) towns:

Since JRPG's are exploding recently on these boards, can we please have an appropriate subforum?

If we were going to add subforums an ARPG subforum would be needed more badly I think.

Also I just checked and theres like 2 jrpg threads on the first page. Exploded?

Unlimited SaGa is pretty much hated by everyone, even the hardcore SaGa fans. I've never actually played it though.

Oh, and despite me calling the games shoddy, I'd like to emphasize that I do consider myself a fan of them and they are a very unique experience.

Alternatively we could just not click on threads we don't want to read

Having a million subforums is annoying and only serves to please OCD faglords.

Or play it for this guy. Go the usual gun/lasers/bazookas route with him, or toss on some suits for strength and defense, give him a sword with an innate ability (Asura or Kusanagi) and watch him him cleave through everyone while taking almost nothing in damage. Or build him to have a bunch of support routines and load him with secondary ability items. And after a certain point in his story you can modify him to take on most of the other mec's forms.

It's not just him though, pretty much any mec in the game can become badass by throwing random high level stuff on their chassis. And that makes them versatile, because it's simple to switch out their kit and make them fill a different role.

Dunno about this one, but SaGa Frontier 2 was awesome and featured a badass non-mage warrior that kicked ass in a world where everyone were fairy-like people wizards, so I assume this game will be good as well.

I am a very traditional old school RPGer. I typically can't stand JRPGs. No Squaresoft crap. No Final Fantasy. I hate it all. I hate most console RPGs. But Saga Frontier was different for me. My wife bought it for me so I felt obligated to play it. I messed around a bit with Emelia my first time playing. Didn't care for it at first. Then I started over as the robot. It's silly with like some kid finding a killer robot and an octopus named taco rebuilding you. But the game had a charm that I can't explain.

I enjoyed collecting gear and hidden items, figuring out combos and one of my favorite things was figuring out how to turn one of the monsters in the group into a dragon. Monsters could absorb abilities from other defeated monsters causing them to morph into other monsters.

As for Saga Frontier 2, that game had nothing to do with its predecessor except a few of the sword moves. But yes the main character was a bad ass wo could not use magic and was always made fun of because everyone else could. He uses metal to basically wipe the floor with all the hippies. Fun game but I didn't enjoy it as much as Saga Frontier 1. Theres something to be said about a game that primarily features leveling up characters & improving their gear. That was what I enjoyed the most.

It's the one JRPG series that seems like it's trying to appeal to cRPG fans. I tried a couple of them and it just felt like an alpha version of a really good game.
