WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?
Ladies and gentlemen, I guess it is that time again.

spekkio said:
Now we need somebody equally stupid to quote Andy's 1st post and continue the legacy in new thread.
I've come to pick up the torch after MicoSelva and his thread. :salute:

As the tradition goes, I will be adding entries to the list once someone replies to the thread and provides me a link. I can't take notice of everything just by myself, so your help is appreciated.

There might be a few changes to the structure of the list, we'll see how it goes. For now, a few guidelines:

- An LP is considered Completed when it reaches a logical conclusion, no matter if it is a victory, a defeat, or even simply 'The End' written in the last update.
- If the LP isn't updated in half a year, there is a good chance it will go under 'Abandoned'.
- If an old (~3 years) LP contains a whole update worth of missing images, it will go under 'Broken' with a comment describing how severe the problem is.

I guess I'll make the changes and gauge people's reactions to them. Hopefully, it'll make the thread better.

Without further ado:

I have thought about it and I wanted to try out something new.

The list of LPs has grown quite large. It is nearly impossible to read all of them. This is why I've decided to introduce a quick and dirty Review system.

Basically, if you come across an LP that you particularly like, and you want more people to become aware of it and enjoy it, write a few words what the LP is about and what made it so special. A recomendation of sorts. It is by no means essential, but I figured the more recomendations an LP has, the more people would want to check it out - and that can only be a good thing.

I can think of a few LPs that captured my attention, myself, but I don't want it to be seen as 'favoritism'. Chances are, if I didn't recommend it, I simply have not had the time to read it. :)

Hopefully, I won't be the only one who considers that feature useful.

For what it's worth, I'm just going to go ahead and say that anyone that wants to change the, I dunno, "layout" or "system" to this thing has my blessing. It should have been done sooner.
Far from all LPs currently jotted down there warrants being jotted down. Frankly, I would suggest dumping the unfinished ones, unless they're still good for a read despite their (totally) unfinished nature, and the shitty joke LPs (my Pokemon Emerald LP comes to mind).

Can't dump them unless the author wants it (I am a curator, not a critic - if people mention it here, on the list it goes), but will consider spoilering them at least.

It is highly unfortunate, but some of the LPs were rendered unreadable with time, since the hosting sites moved or deleted the pictures. Sadly, not many of us want to think about preserving their LPs several years from now. I would highly recomment the authors to use hostings that allow storing the images indefinitely.

I guess I'll have to add a 'Broken' section and move such LPs there.

The goals I tried to pursue:

- Making the list more compact.
- Easily discerning the ongoing LPs at a glance so that people knew which one to watch or join.
- Moving the LPs that got broken with time to a separate section.
- Putting more spotlight on Codexian CYOAs.
- Separating challenge LPs from regular ones, as they are usually more interesting.

The downside is that it is no longer possible to find a game you are looking for with a single Ctrl+F - you have to open a spoiler, first. And if you don't know if the LP in question was completed or abandoned, chances are it might require several clicks. I have not yet decided whether or not this is worth it.

Perhaps ideally I will copy all of the contents to a Google spreadsheet. That would allow finding LPs by alphabet or author, making notes about their condition in case something is missing, make linking to reviews easier, etc. There is a lot of benefits to that approach, but it would be harder to maintain.

I'll probably need to come up with some guidelines what constitutes an abandoned or broken LP, so that there are no misunderstandings. Though usually it concerns old LPs whose authors are no longer around to complain anyway. :)

If the LP isn't updated in half a year, there is a good chance it would end under 'Abandoned'. I'll browse through the ongoing section and move the links accordingly if I find any.

If an old (~3 years) LP contains a whole update worth of missing images, it will go under 'Broken' with a comment describing how severe the problem is.

There is a question if we should give challenge LPs a separate entry. On one hand, they are quite unique and different from regular LPs. On the other, there is a question of what constitutes a challenge. An Ironman playthrough? Sure. A pacifist run? Maybe. A solo run? That's where things start getting questionable.

So, what do you guys think?

I think all the changes you've made are sensible, particularly the spoiler tags. The challenge LP category sounds fun. I'd say a solo run should qualify, since the games were intended to be played with a full party.

Regarding broken LP's, do you intend to separate the completed ones from the unfinished ones? Since they're broken, I suppose it might make sense to lump them together.

Also, here are a bunch of LPs that are missing from the list:
Totally Ongoing:
Dungeon Siege by Jackalope (hasn't been updated after first batch of screenshots +3 months ago, so may be abandoned)

Totally Abandoned:
Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition by Drew
Legend of Grimrock by Mother Russia
Might and Magic Book One: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum by Broseph
Nox by Darth Roxor
Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny Remake by hoverdog
Star Stable by Lady Error

Totally Abandoned, Fell into Disrepair:
Dune by meetdug
Dune by Exmit

???
The Sims 4 by RK47

No, but each entry is supposed to have a descriptor of sorts to indicate how badly it was damaged. I guess I can add whether it was finished or not.

Edit: ugh, looking at some of those I realize that I might need a separate 'never took off' section to place the LPs that were abandoned after the first few updates under. This is like that thing Andyman Messiah was talking about.

Changes:

Added to Ongoing:
Dungeon Siege by Jackalope (hasn't been updated after first batch of screenshots +3 months ago, so may be abandoned)

Moved to Completed:
Crusader Kings 2 The Old Gods by Tigranes. I figured it did not deserve to go under Abandoned.
Silent Storm by Azira

Moved to Abandoned:
Heimdal by Ivar the Boner (more than 50% finished, made it to Iduna's Isle)
Legend of Grimrock by Mother Russia
Might and Magic Book One: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum by Broseph (made it to 5 updates). I figured it had enough content not to be moved to the "didn't even start" section.
Myth 3: The Wolf Age by Ivar the Boner (13 out of 25 missions completed). Sad. It was a damn fine LP and should have taken its rightful place with the LPs of the first two games.
Nox by Darth Roxor (made it to 4 updates). It was off to a nice start, too.
Xenonauts by Undead Phoenix (played until March, 1980, abandoned due to a savegame bug)

Moved to Broken:
Cataclysm (Ironman) by Multi-headed Cow (almost all images missing, but has extensive commentary)
Dune by meetdug (all images missing, rendering the LP unreadable)
Dune by Exmit (all images missing, but the updates have a fair bit of text in them)
Hitomi my stepsister hentai not-really-incest-since-we're-not-related-by-blood game (NSFW) by sportforredneck, continued by Genma:TheDestroyer
Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic - Brotherhood of Shadow by DarthBehemoth (all images missing)

Moved to Never Started:
Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition by Drew (abandoned after the first update)
Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny Remake by hoverdog (abandoned before the first update)
Star Stable by Lady Error (abandoned after the first update)

Added to Ongoing CYOAs
Codexian Play-by-Post Swords & Wizardry Game by nikolokolus

Status Pending:
The Sims 4 by RK47. I think most of ??? LPs belong to RK47. I wonder why that is.

I would leave Ongoing and Completed LPs outside the spoiler tag - other than that, I like the layout changes. :salute:

EDIT: The 'never took off' category is pointless, I would remove these altogether.

Good point. I wasn't sure whether the point of the database was to make it exhaustive or to separate the wheat from the chaff. Some dead-on-arrival LPs I suggested could very well be excised from the list, but I think others are worthwhile for entertainment value, like Andhaira's Grimrock LP.

It's a bit fuzzy. How many updates need to be there for the LP to be considered abandoned rather than 'never started'?

It is clear with the ones that die before reaching the 3rd page, but, for example, Nox LP by Darth Roxor only has 4 updates. Yet those are quality ones that I think are worth keeping.

I would leave Ongoing and Completed LPs outside the spoiler tag - other than that, I like the layout changes. :salute:
Why? Honest question, just want to confirm what people expect from the thread in terms of usability.

I would say more than one...?

Completed and Ongoing are what people are mostly looking for, so they should be visible by default, IMO, for easy eye-scan and search.

Changes:

Added to Ongoing:
Planet Alcatraz by MotherMachinae

Moved to Completed:
Europa Universalis 3: Magna Mundi (Vinland) by Cassidy
Hearts of Iron [Darkest Hour] - Der Untergang: 卐 Germany 1945 卐 by Cassidy
Europa Barbarorum (Sweboz) by Ivar the Boner (95% completed, played up to 171 BC). A shame I had to move it here and not under 'completed', but rules are rules. Maybe an exception could be made in this case? It is tagged as 'Completed', but the author himself admits he was not done yet.

Moved to Abandoned:
Hannibal: Rome and Carthage in the Second Punic War by DakaSha (about 30% finished)
Kentucky Route Zero by Crooked Bee (made it to Act II). How do you abandon a game that is 2 hours long? Maybe someone could pick it up and finish it.
Mount & Blade: The Last Days mod by flabbyjack (made it quite far - 12 updates in total - before having to quit due to a bug)

Added to Abandoned CYOAs
Cloud is Dead (Final Fantasy VII CYOA) by Random
Star Saga 1: Beyond The Boundary by Crooked Bee
The Last Article by WetWorks

Moved to ???
CYOA Circlejerk Round-Robin - Currently Showing: The Adventures of Baron Von Schwarznatter by CYOA celebrities

Not sure about Europa Barbarorum. If anyone thinks it belongs among the Completed LPs (the section that I assume gets checked more often), I will reconsider.

Edit: moved to Completed per the author's decision:
Iver the Boner said:
In Sweboz EB LP I was one settlement short from reaching Sweboz victory condition. It was Boii "capital" which is there to stop AI expansion from east to the west and from west to the east. EB devs said player should cheat their way through this settlement if they want it, it's just there to stop the AI from expanding in weird locations and victory against Boii is almost impossible due to respawning doom stacks. I would consider Sweboz EB LP a finished one due to this, but technically we were still this one settlement short.

Alright, reviews. Here is how it going to work: you write a few words about the LP and what it is about, and I link to your post. It does not have to be anything wordy or thorough, but more exposure never hurts.

I'll guess I'll start and we will see if the practice takes.

Myth - A New Age by Fangshi:
But first, a quick intro from the PC game to set up the mood.

A summary by Baltika9 said:
The ancient balance is shattered.

The Nine Avatara and their rivals, the Fallen Lords, are dead.
The forces of the Light have wrested another dawn from the gaping maw of oblivion.
After two long wars, the realm finally knows peace.
Alric, the last of the Avatara, leads the world into a new age as ruler of the reformed Cath Bruig Empire.

The nobles look upon his throne and plot behind their courteous facades.
His once-allies now look to their own futures, ancient friendships and promises forgotten.
The Free Folk of the North fight their last petty wars and look to new leaders.
And in the East, the Dwarven Kingdom struggles against internal politics and a unified Gholish realm.

In the remote corners of the world, an old enemy stirs and plots from his prison of stone.
The greatest of mortals is finally awakened from his slumber.
The divine powers greedily look upon this realm from their distant planes and bide their time to strike.
And in the Great Devoid, the Leveler dreams and heals his wounds, waiting for the next great hero to corrupt.

The land will run red with the blood of the fallen.
Kings and Emperors will be cast down, their realms destroyed.
Those who dare will take fate into their own hands and carve out their myths in this new age.

Do you dare to take a place among them?
In the grim darkness of the Myth-verse, there is only war. Actually, forget that. This adventure takes place in the world that is familiar to many PC gamers through the series of strategy games by the same name, but it is set up one year after the last war that threatened to destroy humanity. It is still a pretty unsettling place, but there is now an undercurrent of hope as the world struggles to rebuild from the cinders it was reduced to.

The heroes of the CYOA, though, remain largely oblivious to it, as they find themselves to be outcasts, rejects and misfits that have to eke out a living in the shadows and on the outskirts of society, with nothing but ties of camaraderie to get them through the day. The story of the appropriately named Circle of the Lost and its founder, Derryth ó Foghladh will take you to the forefronts of battles that most mortals will never find out about, and uncover secrets that were thought to be long forgotten, as you travel through the most dangerous corners of the world in a quest for riches, glory, and maybe something else as well.

The main heroine, or heroines, as the case may be, are one of the most Codexian protagonists that graced the LPs. Capable of deeds most heroic and villainous at the same time; showing greed, vindictiveness and cruelty in equal measure with selflessness and loyalty; neither heroes nor mercenaries; neither of the Light nor of the Dark; with little respect for rules or authority of any kind and stubborn to the point of recklessness, they truly represent the best and the worst the 'Dex has to offer. It says a lot about them that nine people taking a stand against an army of four hundreds on a whim - and living to tell about it - is not the most insane thing they have done. The situations they find themselves in provide a neverending source of amusement as they step walk dance on the toes of deities and archmages alike without a care in the world, and their sheer tenacity in the face of overwhelming odds remains one of the most attracting features of the LP.

The CYOA itself takes a very setting-based - as opposed to the plot-driven - approach, which means that the players are free to do absolutely anything they wish and pursue their own goals if they so choose. The updates are essentially P&P sessions made into a forum format, with everything it entails. The effort that went into building the game world is very impressing, though the author often takes some liberties, canon-wise, since Bungie left much of the setting's lore to the imagination. It is not afraid to borrow from other sources, like Celtic myths and Lovecraftian books, if they fit in with the rest of the story.

The CYOA highlights include: rat diplomacy, together with dog, ghol, demon and Fallen Lord diplomacy; bodycount in the low thousands; demonic rock offs; pet talking heads; journeys to the land of dreams and into the deepest recesses of insane minds, Inception-style; and unwittingly starting a five-sided free-for-all war while visiting a kingdom on a vacation, after accidentally setting half of its capital on fire. :salute:

Because I'm always right. If you ask me I would prefer to see this list as clean as possible.

No thanks. I already picked up FF7 and we all know how that turned out.

"Hyborian Age" by Kz3r0 is wrongly listed in "Let's Plays" as well as "CYOA".
Also it was sadly :( not "Completed"...
