I've been toying with this idea for a while now. I always loved reading CYOA threads, and I especially loved Hellraisers Europareich CYOA (Shame it was abandoned). So after brainstorming about the setting and lore I decided to make this a Steampunk CYOA. I think Steampunk is a somewhat unappreciated genre that would make for a great CYOA. So let's get started shall we?

Introduction (this post)

A quick history lesson:
On the 28th of June, 1919, Germany was forced to sign a treaty which would bring an end to the Great War, one of the bloodiest wars in human history. The treaty, the treaty of Versailles was supposed to bring peace to Europe after years of fighting. Germany, however rejected the treaty, specifically article 231, in which they were required to make substantial territorial concessions and pay reparations. The rejection of the treaty "Exiled" Germany from Europe. Trade with the Empire was forbidden, and instead of simply making the Germans pay for their crimes, the Allies intended to bleed them dry. This would force Germany into signing the treaty anyway, as their economy would no doubt collapse.

However, things did not go as planned.

Germany still had allies in eastern Europe, who kept supplying the German Empire. Still, the hyperinflation of the 20's could not be prevented. Once Britain and France found out about eastern countries suppling the German Empire, they threatened cut all ties with them like they had with the Germans.

While this seemed to work in the long run, things eventually backfired. In the 30's, the German Empire was a shadow of it's former self, barely surviving from the supplies it recieved from it's allies. However, during this time, a German rose to power. His name was Adolf Hitler, he promised to strengthen the economy, provide jobs and make Germany the proud empire it was supposed to be. Although he planned to eventually get back at the Allied forces, as they tried to force Germany into signing the treaty, Htiler recognized that the shaky economy had priority. He built the German Empire (now the Third Reich) by usurping (either conquering or making them an offer which in most cases they couldn't refuse) the eastern countries that had supplied germany for the last decade.

Soon, the Third Reich was born and was establishing itself as a major player in Europe. Their economy flourished, while western Europe was in an economic crisis, as pretty much all of eastern Europe had joined the Third Reich. Faced with a difficult situation, Great Britain decided to take action. They offered the western countries the same choice as the Germans did, become part of a larger unity. Most countries accepted right away, thus the British Institution was born. Europe was now divided in two great superpowers. Both spend a lot of energy in developing new technologies, both for public use and for warfare. This led to accelerated technological development. Since WW2 never occurred, Major scientific breakthroughs were in robotics, bringing about an advanced Artificial Intelligence and computers. There were also some technological advancements regarding items that were created earlier than in our timeline, such as portable devices, Cybernetic Implants (A recent scientific breakthrough) and completely automated security systems.

Now, both nations are at the height of their power. Europe is about to enter a tense Cold War, with the British Institution preparing their massive armies and the Third Reich secures it's domain and prepares for the eventual resumption of hostilities against the allied forces.

Above is some basic lore and history to get you an idea of what the setting is going to be like. Below are very basic profiles of the nations involved in this CYOA.

British Institution:

President:

Eric Watson (Born 1885)

The British Institution is a socialist state that was formally established in 1938 by the British goverment, in order to compete economically with Nazi Germany. The idea for the British socialist state was concieved by Eric Watson, who decided that the only way western Europe could compete with the Germans is that they would also need to form a superpower. Only then would they be able to match and compete with the German Economy. The Institution is governed as a single-party state with London as its capital. It is a union of several western European countries, with its government and economy highly centralized.

Third Reich (Nazi Germany):

Führer:
Av11.png

Dietrich Hitler (born 30 April 1945)

The Third Reich was established in 1933, following a period in which the German goverment rapidly declined. Adolf Hitler soon rose to power and seized control of the state. It is controlled by the Hitler family and its National Socialist German Workers' Party, commonly known as the Nazi Party. Under Hitler rule, Germany is now a totalitarian state where nearly all aspects of life are controlled by the state. Racism, especially antisemitism, is a central feature of the regime. Jews and others deemed undesirable are persecuted or murdered, as opposition to Hitler rule is ruthlessly suppressed.

Mediterranean Republic:
Flag:

Leader(s):
N/A. Members of the Republic keep their own governments and government-controlled organizations.

The Mediterranean Republic is a democratic federation based in Spain (Its capital the city of Sevilla), with holdings in Italy, Greece and Turkey. The Republic operates through a system of independent institutions and intergovernmental negotiated decisions by its member states. It emphasizes many values which they claim have been forgotten by the Nazis and the Institution, such as 'true' democracy, liberty, and most importantly, freedom of speech.

Character Creation:
And now, after this massive loredump, it is time to create our character!

Our situation is this. Our character is an inhabitant of the British Institution, he/she has been relocated from his/her previous location to the city of London, the capital of the Institution. In London, we can either make our fortune or meet our demise... the choice is up to you.

First up is gender, name and appearance. I'm going to allow you pick a portrait from the ones below, or you can choose your own, I don't mind much really. Lastly you can come up with any name you want:

Male:

Av2.png

Av6.png
Av7.png

Female:

Next up is Alignment. This is were character creation gets really interesting! Alignment will not only define our basic personality, but also what choices we have (a neutral evil person might get less peaceful options than someone who's Lawful good.) I'm going to copy D&D on this one. Alignment descriptions can be found at pretty much any D&D site, so I'm not going to bother explaining them. The available alignments are:

Chaotic Evil
Neutral Evil
Lawful Evil
Chaotic Neutral
Neutral
Lawful Neutral
Chaotic Good
Neutral Good
Lawful Good

Lastly, you guys get to decide our basic background (or class if you will)

We are...

A civilian
Civilians make up over 85% of the Institution's population. Most civilians are well-educated and have access to basic needs. As of 1946, all civilians are allowed to possess basic firearms, they are encouraged to only use these in case of emergency however, as all participants of shootouts are prosecuted with no exceptions.

A police officer
Police officers are essentially the Institution's thought police in all urban areas, including London. They possess basic firearms as well as stun batons and pepper spray. They are clad in basic suits of armor. The suits themselves are linked to a network which the wearer can tap into. The wearer can access various profiles of suspicious people, as well as convicts. The network also broadcasts its fair share of ads and propaganda.

An escaped prisoner
Having escaped from one of the many prisons of the Institution, you were barely able to make it into London. As a prisoner, you know a few tricks to keep you out of harms way. You also have some combat skills, otherwise you could never have survived the occasional prison riot.

A bounty hunter
The job doesn't matter, as long as the pay is good. You have grown up on the streets, and learned you had a thing for killing. You quickly decided to make a living out of it. As a bounty hunter, you know how to remain hidden, and only strike when the time is right. You also have access to a variety of firearms and melee weapons, some legally available, some illegally.

A Politician
Although the Institution is led by the president and he rules with an iron fist, he is more than willing to keep up the illusion of democracy. As a politician you are a member of the parliament. While you are unfamiliar with firearms, you know enough people who make a living out of firing them daily. You also have developed social skills and always know what to say, even when forced into an unpleasant situation.

**********

Ok guys, this is my first CYOA. First of all, let me know what you think, submit your character and feel free to ask me questions about the setting, character creation or just say so if you have a suggestion to make this newbie's first CYOA even better!

According to your map, Barcelona (Capital of Mediteranian Republic) is in "British institution". If you dont want to change the map, maybe you could change description of capital and put Granada or Sevilla or hell why not Murcia

Noted. Damn, that is a pretty big and stupid mistake! Thanks for noticing!

Good thing Joan of Arc doesn't have a grave or she'd be spinning in it !

A few questions :

- If this is steampunk, how different is the technology from what truly existed during the middle of the 20th century ? What means of transportation and communication exist ? What kind of weapons do countries use in war ?

- I guess it may not play a role in the story, but could you give a general idea of what the rest of the world is like ? Is Africa still colonized ? How powerful are the US ?

Questions: Are you a fag?
No sir I am not. Would you rather roleplay as a 70-year old virgin? And for some inane reason, all men want to look the same these days, so I had trouble enough finding suitable portraits that depicted different looking men.

- It is different in the sense that is much more advanced than in our world. It is Steampunk because certain inventions like television never happened or are very different from our counterparts (And because the world is influenced by early 20th century culture). For example, television in this CYOA is a lot like in 1984, spread throughout London are giant telescreens which broadcast things like news and propaganda, very few people actually have a television in their own homes. Instead they still rely on newspapers and magazines. Transportation is also accomplished with the giant airships pictured in my first post. because of the giant skyscrapers also pictured, these are the primary method of transportation. Communication is a lot like pre-WW2. People use telephones and tablets (Yes tablets do exist, but they are a lot chunkier and also pretty heavy, so they are pretty rare). Warfare is a lot like WW1, but both the Nazi's and the Institution are developing advanced robots who are very capable in combat. Robots currently are still too 'dumb' and are only used by people for common household tasks.

- I listed Russia, so I guess I owe you an answer. Russia is still a major player in international politics. It is also a major communist state. Russia supplies the German government but remains independent as it is far too large for Germany to conquer. As Nazi Germany never started WW2, the US has very little reason to interfere with European politics. Only when Nazi Germany declares war on the Institution might they decide to interfere.

Bounty huntress
Lawful Evil (most appropriate alignment for that profession, really)

I don't have any good idea as far as the name is concerned right now.

Ok guys, if it continues like this, we'll be playing a female bounty hunter, which is fine by me... I'm gonna keep to voting open till let's say... Monday?
And if your character isn't chosen as the main character, don't worry. I plan on using other submissions later as possible party members who can help our protagonist.

Magnus Magnusson.
Chaotic Evil.
Officer of the concentration camps for political prisoners and people society deems undesirable.
Enjoys fetishes of rape and torture, as well as sodomy.
Allows horrific experiments to go on at his camps, bordering between science and madness.
Has pieces of his office furniture made from human body parts, including skin, skulls, fingers, teeth, and jawbones.
Uses the children of his camps for a large child prostitution and pornography ring, and the older teens as slaves, selling them in high priced bidding contests.

Theodric Rieker
Lawful Evil
Bounty Hunter.
He believes himself to be judge, jury, and executioner outside the normal means of the law.
He has no qualms about murdering a man after he has been tied up, with an icepick, a wire, or a bullet to the head.
Does not believe in killing innocent people, and will always try to work towards the best possible solution if there can be 'collateral damage'.
Enjoys some popularity on the streets with low level police officers. The higher ups see him as dangerous, but ultimately a necessary evil.

Ludmilla Jasien
Chaotic Neutral
Escaped Prisoner.
Raped dozens of times while in prison, she has grown fond of castrating those who anger her or offend her in some way.
Considered dangerous by many, she is not pathological in her killing, but is what prison psychiatrists called an Anger Killer.
Still, she is not without conscience and there are many things she will not do.
Now, she is only trying to survive. Starting a new life is impossible for her, and so she must live every waking day as if it is her last, hoping to somehow get lucky enough to flee the country.
However, she's prepared. If they do catch her, she will make damn sure she won't be going back to prison outside of anything except a pine box.
And she's got enough explosives and bullets to take a police station with her.

What's great is I created all those characters on the fucking fly man.
The fucking fly!

And I am grateful for that! I did say other submissions could be used as future party members, or even antagonists. Your characters are going to be great additions to the story. From the looks of it, it still seems like the female bounty hunter is winning though, unless some miracle happens.

Before we begin, I'd like to present the final character draft. The name is a combination of two submissions.

Rachel Dollabella
Lawful Evil Bounty huntress

Ok here we go.

One last thing: Again I'd like feedback as this is my first CYOA, I've read some here in the Playground, but as English is not my native language, feedback is welcome

Chapter 1: London 13B inbound

steampunkcity.jpg

It was a bright sunny day in May, and a computerized voice coming out of a loudspeaker was busy reciting the times at which the airships would arrive at the main platforms. Next to the loudspeaker was a telescreen which showed the BBC news stream. One by one, news subjects flashed by, "German spies caught at French border." "Production of Androids up 30%." "Construction of new airships halted by activists."

Rachel didn't care though, she had come to London for a reason. A wealthy man, probably a politician, had offered her a job. Normally Rachel would have refused to work for politicians, as she knew they always had their reasons when they placed a bounty on some poor lad, reasons which they always kept to themselves. Most people Rachel went after had gotten themselves into some shady business and were smart enough to make it look legal. Politicians usually sent her after opponents, activists or even ex-partners. Rachel always had her doubts if the target was innocent in her eyes, but politicians always paid generously and rewarded her with diplomatic immunity if they ever had to deal with her. This man was no exception. Like most politicians, this man offered her a generous sum of money, although he didn't give her instructions on the phone, he preferred to do that in person, from his office in one of London's skyscrapers. Rachel found this somewhat odd, most of the time, her contractors gave her very specific instructions right away.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the computerized voice, announcing that her airship, which was headed for sector 13B, had arrived. Rachel snapped back to reality as she opened her eyes, and realized she almost fell asleep.
"Airship 1138 arriving at terminal 1. Destination: sector 13B, London offices and national park."
She looked up from the grass, as she was sitting on a Bronze bench in one of the gardens of the airship station, waiting for her ride. Next to her was a police officer. The man obviously hadn't recognized her. Most officers just gave Rachel a cold and disapproving look. This officer's eyes were bright and seemed somewhat cheery, but Rachel couldn't tell if he was smiling because the officer was wearing a communications mask. Around her were various people, all waiting for their airship to arrive and take them to their intended destination. Rachel was in sector 19G, factories and worker apartments. 19G wasn't a sector known for it's wealth and high living standards, as it primarily housed the many airship factories and apartments of the working class. Rachel could see the chimneys of the factories past the giant skyscrapers. It was a stark contrast to gardens of the airship station which were filled with beautiful flowers and trees and were illuminated by street lights. The police officer sitting next to her finally seemed to realize someone sat next to him, as he looked at Rachel.

"Good morning." Rachel said as she noticed the officer looking at her. The officer nodded and replied "Good morning ma'am." His voice sounded somewhat robotic as his comm mask automatically adjusted his voice to sound more 'imposing'. Rachel thought she could make out the faint radio chatter coming out of the internal loudspeakers, but she wasn't sure as garden was kind of noisy. She quickly got up and bid the officer goodbye. She always felt kind of nervous around police officers. However, she always tried to come across as confident and friendly. Most officers can tell when you're hiding something, or when you're about to do something illegal. The Institution calls it a 'gift' but Rachel calls it a 'curse' as it often forced her to disable or even kill officers who stood in her way.

Rachel was headed for the main platform, which provided access to several terminals. As she took the stairs to the main platform, her eyes were drawn to the passing airships which she could see through the glass window on her right. The airships transported people to the different sectors of London. Only the upper class citizens were allowed to use the airships for transportation, the lower class citizens had to use the trains in the lower city. Rachel noticed she was running late, and quickly ran up the stairs to the main platform. The main platform was big, as it provided access to several terminals, shops and also to the elevators taking people down to the lower levels, although these were seldom used. The floor was made of grey stainless steel and was probably cold to the touch. Rachel however, was drawn to the roof. The roof was big, imposing and made of glass. It depicted Eric Watson, the president of the Institution. Rachel wasn't much of a nationalist, but seeing the president immortalized in glass, his face illuminating the main platform, she couldn't help but feel a little impressed.
"He isn't exactly subtle." She said to herself. She quickly moved on, walking in the direction of terminal 1.

All of a sudden, a big, overweight man, clad in an orange jumpsuit pushed Rachel out of his way, causing her to almost lose her balance. "Hey! Watch it!" Rachel replied, but the man didn't look back. He was in a hurry, as he made a run for one of the shops. In his hands, Rachel spotted a somewhat rusty knife.. "Stop! Somebody stop him!" A police officer shouted. Rachel turned around to see two police officers giving chase to the man. One of the officers was the one Rachel greeted earlier in of the the station's gardens. "Oh Bridget! I am coming for you honey! You hear me!" The man shouted as he held his knife up in the air. Immediately everyone around the fat man backed away and put their hands in the air in fear. The man walked in a circle, his head covered in sweat. "Where's my wife? Where's that whore?!" The man shouted as he looked around in panic. Rachel began to suspect the man was suffering from a major panic attack, as his eyes were almost as red as his face and his whole body seemed to be shaking. Some people tried to approach the man and tried to talk some sense into him. However before they even started talking, the man pushed them away and swung his knife in the air. He shouted at some people and continued asking for his wife. The police officers slowly approached him, their stun batons on standby. Rachel sighed, this was only slowing her down. Rachel slowly got up, adjusted herself, brushed back her blonde hair and decides to...

A) Do nothing, try to sneak away from the scene

B) Fire a stun dart at the man

C) Try to talk to him
