If you voluntarily join the Order (by not getting captured by them but by working for them in the city) you can become a mage and it is the only way of becoming one. It's actually somewhat interesting depending on your personal ethics, as both sides aren't exactly what they appear to be at first glance. Additionally I found the mage quest line to be the most entertaining option.

Btw my necro shitpost aside, should I eat the str, dex, wis +1 plants or make them into potions instead? Normally in these PB games you should make them into potions for max gains, but I have yet to find any recipes that allow me to do that.

I avoid making potions to increase stats in the good PB games so I don't become overpowered too quickly. I'll usually wait until the final chapter to resort to such methods, and even then I've only really found it necessary for the shitty dragon beat 'em up chapter in NotR Gothic II.
