Reflex is a competitive Arena FPS that combines modern tech with the speed, precision and freedom of a 90s shooter.

Reminds me of Toxikk.

Looks like this kind of gameplay is proliferating nowadays.

Cliff Bleszinski is returning to the videogame business with BlueStreak, a free-to-play sci-fi arena shooter for the PC.

All of them have been announced within the last 5 months or so.

This one seems like the least gay of all of them.

It looks nice. There seems to be too much air control, though, reminiscent of Painkiller or UDK's default physics.

Props to them for choosing Promode as their inspiration, most fun way of playing Quake 3 ever, even if it's quite popamole compared to the base game. Actually surprised they plan to bother with the textured overlays, game looks very good as is from a gameplay perspective - everything is clean and easy to distinguish, effects look good but don't cover half the screen with decals and shaders. Kind of looks like what Q3 on picmip 5 would look in a modern game engine, which is a good sign.

A multiplayer FPS that actually requires SKILLZ? And no F2P?

Going to die within the first month after launch because it ain't gonna get a critical mass of players. You'd be lucky to get an 8-player match going even on weekends.

See, e.g. Shattered Horizon, Nexuiz, Section 8 sequel, and countless others.

Reflex is based on CPMA, so the air control is intentional. That said, assuming the developers are doing it right the air control shouldn't feel anything like Painkiller or UDK. In CPMA you can turn in midair either by holding forward (no acceleration) or holding the direction of your turn (sharper turning radius, accelerates you), but your turning radius is limited by your speed and you have significantly less control over the trajectory of normal, low speed jumps. It's not like Painkiller where you can pull off 1080° spins while zigzagging back and forth because your inputs map nearly 1:1 to your character's midair movement. There's a much greater sense of momentum.

:argh: The only thing popamole about promode is instant weapon switching, which Reflex plans to eliminate.
