Role-playing games could be more realistic to be honest, but only in a specific way. The problem with action rpgs is that everything is linear, you get constant action and nothing else. It would be hilarious to find a completely empty place from a modern rpg, no items or monsters or flashy magic effects. I think pacing is one reason why some older games are good, you had moments of pure exploration without having to fight generic monsters.
