As for the game itself... The good news is that translating it probably won't take as long as with Sengoku Rance. The script is smaller and less complex than in Sengoku.

On the bad... Well, it is more of a traditional Rance game. I cant say I really like the quest concept - there is no real branching in the story, just a collection of separate quests. No save slots, you can repeat quests as many times as you want (grinders rejoice).

Lots of old friends make a cameo, so those who've played the earlier games in the series will be pleasantly surprised - those who've just played Sengoku won't get so much out of it. Well, Rance is still Rance and most of the jokes are funny even if you don't get the references.

Frankly I am more interested in seeing what they plan to do with Rance 9, this seems like bit of a filler (mainly due to the quest structure, the game doesn't feel so "epic"). But will see, plenty of the game yet to see.

Sucks that they went back to the Rance 6 system. Why can't alicesoft simply milk the great system that they have available in Sengoku? They seem to insist on changing the game up with every iteration, and unfortunately the Rance 6 style is the one I like least.

Are the battles at least tactically challenging? Worst part about Rance 6 was that everything except the bonus bosses were mindnumbingly easy and there wasn't much else left after they removed the adventure game elements.

Oh, that is quite interesting. For the most part what sets Rance games apart from normal RPG's is the anti-hero protagonist. Well, I guess the world can be interesting as well - Rance universe revolves around a rather... well, different God:

Childish and immature in nature, the Whale favors negative feelings and emotion. He finds suffering, hatred, and sadness comforting, and likes death and destruction due to its nature to create negative emotions. He finds entertainment in tragedy and chaos, and likes to keep his world that way.

If you can point out what you find interesting in Rance, then we probably can find you all-ages games with similar elements. For me, I prefer the ones with porn in them as that usually means that they revolve around other mature themes as well. And the fact that they are built without any hope for a console release.

Rance 02 should work just fine if you run it through Applocale. Not doing so causes problems because it can't find the moonspeak files.

Rance is one of the few game characters that truly mature throughout the years. Rance has grown from petty skirt lifting to a man that faces the problems a man does: parenthood, friends passing on and... erectile dysfunction.

Yeah, finished the game. *Quest -style grinding isn't really my thing. There were some tough fights where you really had to think, but mostly the problems were solvable through grinding more. No real C&C, as typical for "normal" Rance games.

The story suffers quite bit from the fractured, quest driven structure. It is still often extremely funny, but not as cohesive as I'd prefer. Rance fucks a lot of women throughout the game (50 or so) but there are only a few story scenes specific for them.

And in addition to that, several of my favourite characters in the series were treated very harshly.

That being said, the new patch makes the grind a whole lot less grindy (you can level up characters several time in the same quest, damage caps were lowered). Still, I would say that this is one of my least favourite Rance games.

Props to Alicesoft for having the balls for going this far with their joke/parody of classic console RPG's.

I went and check with a friend, and it actually means Sparta. Say, like in This.Is.suparuta! followed by kicking niggers into holes.

However, the word is usually used as meaning a hardcore, brutal, insane, and extreme training from hell regime and similar, or related, stuffies.

So, like, think of them like Sardaukar or some thingie along those lines.

Rance 3 is apparently very close to completion. Rance Quest has started just recently, not much progress so far (and they appear to be having a hard time retaining people at the moment). Daiteikoku has a 25% finished patch out (which also translates the entire interface if thats all you want), at the rate they are going that means another 12 months. I'm guessing much less though, they started out slower and have picked up speed since.


I'm going back to play more of the older Rance games and I'm pleasantly surprised. On Rance 4.1 ATM, and while gameplay has still ranged from mediocre to competent but too easy at best thus far as an adventure game w/ Rance being Rance they are still enjoyable. Thankfully in Rance 3 and later games there seems to be none of the bullshit "use every item on every thing, then inspect, talk to, and attempt to rape every person at least twice to find out how to progress the game" stuff.

It's quite funny that at the end of the day Rance comes off as more compassionate and heroic than most protagonists who are written to be like that. Then again, he is an Ally of Justice and Cute Girls.

In fact, didn't Sengoku Rance reveal that Rance does not have any negative emotions or karma at all? Truly a tasteful rapist with a heart of gold.

Rance is a very unique character. His motivations are basically that of an anti-Hero version of a Lawful Stupid Paladin, which opens up all the interesting points of a rigidly principled character without limiting the actions to purely goody goody must do no evil. Its also refreshing to play a character who absolutely doesn't give a fuck, and so Rance himself drives the game based on what he wants to do. How many other games do you really get to see that in? Commander fucking Shepard gets led around like a dog on a leash from plot point to plot point.
