ps4 and xbox one hitting a performance wall

developer on the Unity team raised even more interesting material., we have already peaked on the graphical compute capability of these two new gaming consoles.

The PS4, the more graphically powerful of the two very similarly designed consoles, was not able to maintain a 30 FPS target when rendering at 1920x1080 resolution with Assassin's Creed Unity.

we are less than a year into the life cycle of hardware that was planned for an 8-10 year window and we have reached performance limits

but a R7 260X released in March of 2013, provides more performance than the PS4 and the Radeon R7 250X is faster than what resides in the Xbox One.

Xbox one from get go was set to end up like that at release even not just 1 year. 1,3TF power in 2013 was really shitty hardware and they didn't implement anything that could punch things above its weight like in PS4 case.

At least in PS4 at that time was basically 7850/7870 coupled with R290x compute tech, they added to it solid stack of GDDR5 and full HSA cap some proper hardware for audio and proper API which is confirmed to be good stuff.

I assume that Xbox One will never show anything interesting anymore in therm of graphical tech.
In PS4 case i think it is safe for now to assume games will look more or less the same with PC for next 2 years and after 2 years there will be clear difference in graphic. Though considering progress of graphic tech most of new tech and efficient application of it will be first used on shitty PS4 instead of PC. Especially physic tech which already clubs anything in PC space and anything on horizon for now.

Again with the 7870 bullshit? How do you fathom a "7870 coupled with R290x compute tech" ends up 20-30% worse than a 7870?
And they don't even have the benefit of custom coolling or being boosted by a intel cpu or a 5hz amd one...

AMD trolled them hard, that's all there is to it. And the gamers will suffer cause no way in hell they don't keep this tech at least 4-5 years.

That is how it is under the hood. It is basically mish mash between 7850 and 7870 + R290 compute tech. And it is definetely working way beyond its weight considering what we saw in for example The Order or Driveclub.

I have 7970 and i5-3470 and i am sure as hell it would melt down playing The Order.

Gullible much? It's weaker than a 260x, about half as powerful as your video card and the cpu is probably 3 times worse.
Desktop gaming GPU's haven't broken a sweat in 1080p since 4 or 5 years ago. That should be proof enough how castrated these APUs are.

because it isnt a 7870, it is a 7870M

the M means mobile, or the laptop version. it was released in i think feb 2009, whereas the 7870 was released in like sept 2008.

Do a search in this thread. M was never specified and the numbers thrown around are from the desktop cards.

Wonder why they waste 1/3 of the vertical space when that's the limiting factor for this game.

Most reliable sources seem to put the PS4 roughly on par with the 7850, with the XBone again a bit below that.
There are some hardware differences that might give one or the other advantages in certain scenarios, but that will only ever play a role for exclusive titles from devs that know what they are doing, I think.
With the CPU being based on a CPU design aimed for Netbooks, the only redeeming quality is that they have 8 cores. Which might help if the devs learn to use them one day, but it sure ain't making their life easier.

But Microsoft and Sony knew very well what they were getting themselves into. They wanted a cheap console that could be sold without having to rely subsidising the hardware too much, maybe even at a profit. But even back in 2012 it was clear that such a console will at most sport mid-range hardware. And that's what they have. 2012 mid-range GPUs coupled with a subpar (for the application) CPU.

Consoles are dead in Japan: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...sical-game-sales-at-lowest-point-for-24-years

Japan's console market at lowest point for 24 years
Software top 10 entirely for 3DS and Wii U.

2014 saw Japan's home console and handheld game sales reach their lowest point for 24 years.

Has the sun set on Japanese console giants?

Japanese gamers bought fewer consoles and physical console games last year than in any year since 1990 - when SNES arrived in the country.

Sales figures from Famitsu (translated byNeoGAF) reveal the decline in full - and all despite the launch of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in Japan last year.

2014's total physical game sales for all home console and handhelds generated 369 billion yen (£2bn). Back in 2007 that number was nearly double - 688bn yen (£3.8bn).

The 10 top-selling games in Japan last year were all for Nintendo platforms (eight of which were for 3DS, a reflection of Japan's preference for handhelds in general).

Level 5 role-player Yo-kai Watch 2 sold the highest (just over 3m copies), while Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire notched up 2.4m copies.

Monster Hunter 4, Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Dragon Quest Monsters 2 also charted highly, alongside Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

3DS was, unsurprisingly, the top-selling console in Japan last year. It shifted 3.1m units, making for a 17.8m lifetime total in the country.

PlayStation Vita was the second-best selling console. Sony shifted 1.1m units, out of a 3.4m Japanese lifetime total.

Numbers for home consoles were less rosy. PlayStation 4 launched and sold 925k (out of an 18.5m worldwide total). Wii U sold 604k. Xbox One launched and sold 45.9k.

The following graph lays out 2014's Japanese sales versus data from the last 27 years:

jpg

Digital console sales remain low in the country, while PC gaming has never been a huge force.

So what, then, is happening to game sales in Japan? Eurogamer investigated the country's changing games landscape in detail following Tokyo Games Show 2012 and found that the decline in traditional console sales only part of the story.

"I think the Japanese market hasn't declined - it's just moved," explained Monkey Paw's John Greiner, former head of the now-defunct Hudson.

"We've shifted from a console-dominated market to a mobile-dominated market. That's not necessarily a bad thing - I think there are some great games out there. But it might not be globally oriented games - your RPGs of old that everybody loved, your fighters and things like that doesn't necessarily translate to mobile."

The Japanese games market is now dominated by huge developers such as Gree and Dena which make vast amounts of money via mobile games intended for a Japanese audience.

In other news: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-01-06-playstation-4-has-sold-18-5-million-units-worldwide

PlayStation 4 has sold 18.5m worldwide
PS Plus subscriptions have surpassed 10.9m.

PlayStation 4 has sold 18.5m units worldwide as of 4th January 2015, Sony has announced in a Japanese press release (via Gematsu).

Evidently 4.1m of those sales were made during the period between 23rd November and 4th January.

Sony also noted that PlayStation Plus subscriptions surpassed 10.9m as of 2nd January.

On the software side, 81.8m PS4 games have been sold.

Sony will no doubt be delighted with sales of PS4, which went on sale in November 2013. It's the fastest-selling console ever in the UK, and has continued to outpace sales of the PlayStation 2, which ended up selling over 150m units.

Microsoft has yet to offer an updated sales figure for Xbox One, but in November 2014 Xbox corporate vice president of marketing, strategy and business, Yusuf Mehdi, said 10m units had been sold to retailers.

There is a silver lining to it if it means Japanese devs will become more PC-focused.

You don't see whole picture.

It is not M version. There is not even GPU. It is APU. Which means CPU+GPU on a single piece of chip. Thanks to it and unified memory it has full HSA cap. which is first for any kind of consumer harwdware and something that will come to PC in few years.

Also they really didn't have any choice as only AMD had APUs worth taking. Both Intel and Nvidia are in stoneage with those compared to AMD and no company will now choose separate CPU and GPU if they have APU on table.

I meant that the few devs who will retain a console focus will have to focus more on the west - which comes with a bigger focus on PC as well.

That requires actual PCs sold in Japan. Or you presume that they will now create games for "West" which naturally won't happen as japanese devs simply love their market instead of gajin market

Those Japanese developers corporations disagree with you: :M

fixed that for you. Most of devs in Japan doesnt even know what is steam. Hell even Beyonetta producer didnt know what it is just year ago.

The devs don't need to know. The publisher will tell them what system to make their games for.

And publishers already told them to do mobile games. Biggest japan publisher SE in their earnings said that most of their resources are dead set on mobile market and they will no longer release multiple console games. Just one or two games with high budget, 2 with lesser and rest for mobiles.

Only if people will actually buy games like FFXIII :)troll:) or MGS5 :)popamole:) then they will consider actualy releasing games for PC instead of scraping barrel for additional change by releasing old shitty ports.
