Popular weapons *PWN* better ones in RPGs

Like, an M16 consistently being more accurate, having a larger range and doing more damage than an FN FAL, or a katana being much better than an European broadsword in all respects. Because of Mythos, or something?

Are there RPGs where the designers do know their stuff? And which have believable combat mechanics?

Things like "heavy" armor dragging you down severely, while you can happily jump and run around with 500 kg of crap in your inventory come to mind.

But good spread of weapon drops and categories is a rarity, really, which always pisses me off. It's especially annoying in fantasy games where you almost always gimp yourself if you don't specialise in swords. Swords swords swords swords everywhere, yeah, okay, how about a fucking warhammer, I haven't seen one for 15 hours already, FFS.

Agree.

Vanilla JA2 the FN FAL definitely was the best weapon if you use it as a battle rifle (which you should)

Eh. Plenty of fantasy game have awesome hammers, axes, and the like though, yeah, usually swords are more represented. BIG FUKKIN' DEAL. And, that's coming from an axe/dwarf fanboy.

Most devs are smart enough to realize that making people drop their favorite gear for something they don't care about is not the best way to make them like the game. Swords are more popular than other weapon types, so you get a shitload of swords.

also katanas tend to be better in Japanese games, for obvious reasons

Cause Most games comes from Kwanzoo or Kwanada so M16/C7 is of course better and thanks to Animu shite being so popular there we have Katana the best sword ever myth too. WTF is Broadsword BTW? Everybody know Longsword was :obviously: Superior to this cheap made sword made for red shirts like men at arms and city guards. Swords were linked to Knights and universal weapon good at everything but not best of while warhammer was specialist weapon designed to fight the full plate donning opponent so of course it is far more rare.

Also when in doubt blame liberals from Hollywood.

Because of Mythos, or something?
yes. most people have no idea about weapons and armor, so popular stuff = the best stuff.

as for games: mount and blade/warband. axes and maces tend to be better because armor does not absorb as much piercing/blunt damage then it does slashing, and mounted knights with lances fuck everything up like they did in real life.

edit: i think with broadsword he means those mid-medieval arming swords that have a broad base but a sharp point.

When fighting enemies wearing plate armor, your sword does decent bashing damage. But I would prefer a morning star.

Which have believable combat mechanics?
Very very few unfortunately.
I recall Teudogar treats equipments pretty reasonably.
Battle Brothers combat and equipment in the demo is very believable.
And Unreal world combat is just as cool as ever.

I can't remember anything else though.

And these long swords are what? They probably predate gladius.
They are of the slashing kind, what became the rapier and such when metal armor happened. Or at least the thin kind (as rapiers are for puncturing as well).

That's mostly why I used "broadswords" and not "long swords".

.

C7 is the best gun. It take five years to make one and it is made from one piece of steel that is folded a million times by master gunsmiths.

In reality, it's mostly regionalism or mystifying things. For swords, people want a fancy looking sword but they also want one that wrecks shit, so naturally the +5 sword will have a massive cross guard with spikes and jewels jutting out from all sides.

For guns, mostly just poor research or unwilling to go to gun forums and listen to Kwas and Russians shit themselves while repeating "NATO IS BETTER CAUSE SHATTER" "RUSSIA IS BETTER CAUSE TUMBLING!" over and over.

It's doubly damning because in fictional setting you can balance importance of different advantages/disadvantages to still make your faves come on top without messing their actual properties (for example you're an absolute weeaboo - add a lot fleshy unarmored targets katana will slice through nicely, if you want M16 to com on top of FN-FAL, make recoil and control prime factors in your combat scenarios and so on).

What's that?
Swords starting with the Roman Gladius, culminating in ye olde longsword.
Wut. A european longsword is nothing like a gladius, I don't see any point in lumping the two together. On the other hand a longsword is very close to a katana in how it's used.

And the celt swords in the image there are not longswords, going by the usual usage of the word.

You means *Angeal's* sword.

...that sword gets passed around more than Zoe Quinn.

Swords were linked to Knights and universal weapon good at everything but not best of while warhammer was specialist weapon designed to fight the full plate donning opponent so of course it is far more rare.

Isn't it the other way around? Anything you hit with a big hammer is going down, while there's a bunch of ways to protect yourself from sword blows.
