China's content watchdog opposes the last-person standing nature of PUBG.


PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds aims to roll out its long-awaited vaulting and climbing mechanics this week on test server—however it appears the online battle royale game could now face being banned entirely in China, the game's biggest region by player population.

That's according to this Bloomberg report (via Gamesindustry.biz) which suggests the game's last-person standing, battle to the death-style makeup presents a "deviation" from the country's "socialist core values and traditional Chinese culture and ethical norms".

In turn, the Chinese content watchdog reckons PUBG is "not conducive to the physical and mental health of young consumers".

Loosely translated by Google, here's the watchdog's advice to Chinese developers that might echo games such as PUBG: "To this end, I recommend the domestic game companies should not arrange [research and develop], the introduction of such games, do not advocate to test such a way to attract users. At the same time, gaming, live and other platforms should not be such games to provide publicity, promotion and other services."

Recently, a Chinese Terminator 2 mobile game surfaced that includes a suspiciously familiar battle royale mode. The company responsible, NetEase, works in partnership with Blizzard in operating online games such as Hearthstone, World of Warcraft, and StarCraft 2 in the region.

Now that Tencent finally got local publishing rights to PUBG, curious how do they get away with this?

It's a game that's tailor made for attention-addled millenials who can't take personal responsibility for anything, including sucking at videogames - therefore it's mostly dumb luck that determines the outcome of a match.

What are the mechanics and shit that makes this game so different?

All I see in screenshots is an FPS, but everything said about it besides the camping snipers is something that doesn't sound like a FPS at all.

Explain plz.

- Low pressure - only one out of the hundred people in the game will win. So losing is OK.

The game should be played with a bunch of friends. Shit gets pretty intense towards the end. Sure you can camp all game and try to win that way, but it's boring AF and not a guarantee anyway, since some circles end up in the middle of nowhere + your aim will be shaky due to lack of practice.

We usually play really agressively and either get wiped out right away or win with 30+ kills combined. Also the game plays much better on test servers, this major patch fixed a lot of issues with sounds/shooting/cars/movement etc.

And it's popular because the idea is new and relatively well thought-out. It's terrible on technical level, but it's fun nonetheless.

The launch of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds quadrupled Steam's bandwidth usage

In case you somehow missed it, here’s another reminder - PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is actually out. And as it turns out, when one of the biggest games in the world gets its full release, it has quite the impact on Steam’s bandwidth use.

In the hours before the game’s final test server update, Steam’s total bandwidth was sitting at around 3,000 Gbps. When the update went live, however, that number nearly tripled, to a peak of just under 10,000 Gbps.

Some time later, when the actual, full, final launch of version 1.0 happened, the rise was even steeper. Almost instantly, total bandwidth rose from 5,000 to 20,000 Gbps, before finally peaking at around 22,000 a few hours after full release. Brendan Greene tweeted last night with a handy graph to put all that in perspective.



An interesting takeaway from that graph is how much of the bandwidth usage comes from Asia. In a recent podcast with H3H3 (summarised on Reddit), Brendan Greene said that a full 60% of the game’s playerbase comes from China, which accounts for the enormous orange sections of the graph. Trailing significantly are Europe and North America, with a handful of other regions making up the rest of the bandwidth.

Haven't played PUBG but I have played fortnite and Battle Royal is fun. It is kinda weird however that after you die the game expects you to just quit out of the match

As for PUBG, I still don't understand the appeal of watching the matches. Even if I personally don't like the game I can still understand the matches might get tense, but they're tense for the person playing. If you're watching it's always "dude running on grassy hills" or "dude looting a DayZ-like house". ALWAYS. I've lost count of how many times I opened the PUBG page on Twitch, clicked two or three different streams and it's always the very non-content where action takes 30 mins to happen. And yet... right now it's #1 on Twitch with 110k viewers.

People's standards in entertainment are REALLY FUCKING LOW these days. I thought that was obvious, between the minimal talent youtube super-celebs. The many low grade reality TV shows. The shit that passes as big budget movies these days. The AAA popamole. The awful degenerate shit that is mainstream music. And so on...

Corporations and relentless yet intelligent money chasing really did a number on everything the past decade or so. Not that things were ever perfect, but there's a marked, observable decline there.

I played it with a couple friends and yeah fortnite is pretty fun, but the shooting is fucking awful. But why's that kinda weird?
usually speaking, in a multiplayer game if you die you're expected to wait to respawn in the next round or wait till the next match.
This game practically just kicks you out/ expected you to exit
