Every once in a while he does some serious series, like Catherine, or when he did Bully, and these tend to be entertaining. His Fridays with PDP are also not bad, until he starts undressing and doing random shit.
If you ignore 80% of his current videos he can actually be pretty funny. Better than GameGrumps, Angry Joe and the likes, at least.

My world is even more twisted than that. Here you need to be good at something that actually contributes to civilisation and generates value to be paid for it, and just "being popular" means nothing in and of itself.

But in all seriousness, the number 1 rule about comedy is timing. You have to know when to make a joke, and when not to.

Adam Sandler's first films are funny, and there's a laugh or two in his comedy CDs from the mid-90s.

Even Rob Schneider can be good in movie roles (Down Periscope is a great example).

But them, plus the other yahoos pictured above, have forgotten the flipside of the rule - when not to make a joke. They're constantly trying to be funny, to the point that they're like that saying about the broken clock being right twice a day. They think that they can attain comedy legend status by the sheer volume of humour they present, and often without any diversity being involved, and hope that some of their material hits the mark. They're devaluing themselves in the process.

It's alright to splurge out on (bad) jokes in the beginning steps of your career, when you're trying to find your "base" in comedy and are doing the small-time club scene, but once you've graduated to bigger things you have to git gud or walk away. Denis Leary's "base" was to steal material from others, then use a rant-like attitude as a delivery medium. That resulted in one hell of a standup routine (No Cure For Cancer) but the rest of his comedic career isn't worth talking about. How much time and kilos of cocaine did it take Robin Williams to become the comedic legend that he was...and where did he end up?

Several comedians know this and are just trying to make a quick buck while they're trending, which is where I believe that pewdiepie stands. I find it unlikely that he'll be able to keep up his momentum for long, to the point that he probably won't be a blip by the end of next year. But he's already made millions, so he's not that bothered.

Can we blame a guy for cashing in on his success any more than we can blame the millions of idiots that are making him rich and famous?
