This is a topic I don't see much discussion about, and that I think is quite important to the genre. There is a pretty vast variety in game pace out there, from the rather quick MoO to the very slow and expansive Civ series. Generally I would regard the pace as the number of hours of play it takes for an average player to hit the end of the tech tree, while games may finish much sooner, I feel like the typically player likes to explore the full tree, or at least most of it, in most games (I'm aware a game may carry on much longer after the tech tree is complete but most games offer technologies that push towards a conclusion). Of course, all of these titles offer options that will make the game longer or shorter, but I think the general categories work.
