The NDP numbers came out a couple days ago, and although they only stated that the Ouya's sales were 'light', rumor is that the Ouya sold between 10,000 and 20,000 in its first two weeks. Has there ever been so much hoopla surrounding nothing?

The backer version comes with a "Thank you for believing" insert in the box, while the retail version is supposed to have an "And so Begins the Revolution" insert. The funny thing is that several people who bought the Ouya in retail stores received the "Thank you for believing" insert in their box, and several backers have since received the retail version. The company used Ouya backer versions to fill store shelves.

Meanwhile there are still thousands of backers who haven't even received their Ouya's yet. A few days ago, here's what one backer received inside his shipping box:

Isn't it easy for developers who have already android games to port them? Not being able to play every android game on the console sounds like a dead sentence to me. The reason I think the console is interesting is because it sounds like a cheap and easy way to play mobile games on a TV/monitor with proper controlers at home from your couch instead on a tiny display with a fiddly inputdevice.

mindx2 I have a Gamestick and am porting to that and Ouya. It should be pretty easy to add gamepad support to my menuing system. The only thing that wont work well will probably be the hunting system. I'll probably make it so you just push a button to hunt.

Do you have any expectations that the Ouya will be a good system for you to sell your game on (especially compared to the PC)? What is your overall thoughts on the Ouya? Me, I'm not at all impressed with it or it's selling points (i.e. "We're so Indie and hip").

There is a good way to make an open-source console, and that would be making it Linux-based, not god-awful Android. This would have the bonus effect of making Linux more of a viable gaming OS for PCs, too. This Ouya thing is just pointless.

I remember reading about a developer opening a kickstarter to port their iOS game to Android, and the goal was something like 100.000$. And this for a game that costs a couple of bucks on the Apple store. Unsurprisingly, they failed. For some of the bigger games, i even smell some foul play from Apple's part. Like in Plant vs Zombies, where it took them two years to get the complete version (with Zen Garden and the various mini games) on Android.

iOS and Android are different systems. That porting is more difficult or time consuming is a given. What wonders me is that the many android games you can buy e.g. at google store aren't available for ouya. Are the developers simple not interested? If I were a developer I would make my game available in as most places as possible. Is the ouya company to blame?

What sounds interesting for me are the available emulators with the option to play snes, genesis and dos games, too.

Android apps are built in Java, while I believe iOS apps are primarily written in C/C++. Beyond that, both Android and iOS are completely different operating systems. So porting a game from one system to another not only involves changing operating systems, but writing for different hardware, and in a different language. Changing operating systems alone involves making changes to any code that uses system calls, and replacing any libraries that aren't ported to the new OS, or possibly having to rewrite those libraries from scratch on the new platform. And changing languages pretty much means the entire program has to be rewritten from scratch anyway. So sure, they have the complete assets and all the design work for the finished game, but porting between the two platforms isn't at all easy.

On the subject of the Ouya, it's doomed unless it can get some exclusive games that people actually want to buy. Right now it's pretty much only selling on novelty appeal, and that will wear off soon.

I'm not sure that the games have to be exclusive. When I could have the same or equal selection of games I have for my mobile I would be fine.
The ouya is appealing to me as a way to play the - mostly simple - games from my phone comfortably from my couch and on a big TV/monitor.
But the selection currently available is very very limited. At the moment it's only interesting because of available emulators for me.

I know I can install some games for my phone on ouya too but why aren'T they available there in the first place?

We will support any Android Console we can easily get our games on, its neat seeing them on the TV and playing with a controller. But its got to be easy or it wont be worth the investment as I don't expect sales to be through the roof. Luckily Tales of Illyria was built very smartly and adding Gamepad support to the menus shoudln't take much work as I only need to add code to a couple areas.

I personally think Tales plays best on a Tablet but want to add support for PC.

As far as porting games go, Apple uses Objective C its an older language and doesn't support automatic garbage collection. I have heard some compilers will attempt to add it in for you. Anyways its a bit more old school and is more difficult to work. To do Apple development you have to have a Mac because they are dicks maybe some Game Engines like Unity can get you around this.

Options for porting Android to iOS as far as I know.

- Google actually has made a program the ports Java to Objective-C this will get you started
- Switch to a multiplatform GameEngine, but this may require you port all or some of your code. I found a Java one http://libgdx.badlogicgames.com/ which uses Java but they do things a lot different from core Android.
- Go Native and port all the code yourself.

Its been difficult for me to find the motivation to port the game to iOS its like writing a thick novel for years and then being told you need to translate it into a foreign language you don't know.

Thanks,
Chad

Whoa, that was dangerous. What if it got stuck in the toilet? Shit flooding out isn't fun, I'd know. And his pee isn't yellow enough to be considered very healthy.
Lastly, he didn't wash his hands on video, which is a major offence.
4/10 at best.

Eh, I'll give him a pass on the rim piss job. He's holding a camera, trying to piss directly on a console, and while trying not to get his obvious massive american consoletard junk on camera.

I still don't get the pure hatred for this thing though. There are so many other crappy products out there and this one has people literally...LITERALLY... pissing on it. Sure it sucks and is pointless...but my god, thats true hate dedication. Has any one here pissed on Fallout 3 yet? If not.....

I think the reason the Ouya gets more hate than similarly shitty products is because of hype backlash. Despite being a transparently bad idea, their were legions of fanboys who thought the box that would let them play cell phone games on their TVs would be the most amazing thing ever...and when people get that annoying, they're going to cause a lot of spite.
