It's only a matter of gameplay - if it's popamole invincibility mode as in certain modern shooters, then it's stupid.
If you have the possibility to flank the enemy, use suppressing fire, grenades, etc., it's an addition to gameplay.
As long as you can also destroy the cover with suitable weaponry.

Eh? Are Haemimont not cool? Omerta was decent and worth playing.

It's mediocre IMO. Not horrible but there are too many annoyances about it, plus Haemimont hasn't shown the same attention to detail in their games that is needed for a Jagged Alliance game. With JA2, Sir-Tech not only carried over what worked from JA1 (which was not perfect, but still very good in what it did), but went full autismo on refining both the tactical and strategic layers, which is why till today, people still remember areas like Drassen Airport and Alma.
