Tacticals get it easier because of how their skills are not spread all over the place, Hard Mode is Engineers with Science being a bit harder to play but not really, no.

Class doesnt matter as much as ship you use matter or you Bridge Officers abilities, race really depends on what you want and traits you have available on that race, a lot of people go for Alien since they have a large pool of traits but lack the racial traits that current beat every common trait.

Which is the only proper way to do it IMO. If you have 100% customization vs preset, the preset must be better than any combination by customization.

EDIT: Hurray, login problems.

On the upside, so far I've made about 2 mil off the Emergency Maintenance Deadpool.

Just so everyone knows, there are Duty Officer assignments that allow you to make singularity/warp cores.

They show up in random sectors, on your Engineering NPC on your bridge. You can check it without going on the bridge, under Engineering in the Department Heads tab. The Warp Core assignments can be done by Fed/KDF/Rom, but the singularity assignments seem to only show up with Romulans. The Warp Core prices are coming down because of this, but Singularity Cores are still somewhat high. I just sold an ok Purple Mk. IX (yes 9) Singularity Core for 20mil.

You need 2 Matter/Antimatter Specialists, to do the Warp Core assignment. I can't remember what the requirements was for Singularity Cores.

So anyone have an idiot's guide to combat and ship equipment as well I guess. My strategy right now basically consists of set all power to weapons, fire phasers and hope I don't die. All of my fore weapons are those 90' Dual Banks and 1 Torpedo. The aft is made up of 360' turrets. A long pitched battle like the one where you defend New Romulus is basically impossible for me without the magic power of respawn.

The last battle in Devil's Choice is impossible for anything except ships with Enhanced Battle Cloak (which there are a grand total of two in the entire game), due to how Elachi ships become impossible when they show up in sufficient numbers (they are all fun and games in limited numbers, giving a nice challenge, but their abilities have a critical mass where they quickly become a one-shotting stunlocking horde). The trick there really is just to respawn, respawn, respawn, respawn, and hope that you can take out or do noticiable damage to the Command Ship when you drop Cloak right next to its ass (so when you eventually explode you deal some kamikaze damage).

As for weapons, setting full power to weapons with the preset is the right course of action for 99% of ships in the game. However, weapon selection is dictated by your ship type. Escorts are generally the ones who go for frontal load out, with Dual Heavy Cannons + Torpedo in front and Turrets + Borg Cutting Beam/Breen Cluster Torpedo in the back. A cruiser would want six beams, and a torpedo on front and aft, as broadside is the name of the game for them due to turn speed restrictions. Science Ships are a special category, and generally very dependent on the specific ship in question for the optimal loadout (though broadside wth single torpedo is fairly easy for all of them to work with).

EDIT: Also, every ship needs to cycle Tactical Team I. EVERY. SHIP.

yepp... that last battle in devil's choice is a huge pain in the ass... i found that flying in at high speed, while gaining singularity blips and ripping shields from the command ship, then placing a singularity right on top of it, made at least some visible progress (screaming leeeeeroy jenkins optional)

still had to respawn quite often

It's better to cloak right next to it, saves you the trouble of going through 2-3 Viral Matrixes and dodging 10+ cones of death.

Is it just me or did Elachi ships (the bigger ones at least) have some sort of super weapon? I remember the...Monboosh class was it? fired this sort of crescent shaped looking projectile at me. It hit and the next thing I know, I'm down from 100% to 0% in that particular shield section. Either that or my shields are very weak, something I can't dispute. Still running around with a blue shield I got 10 levels or so ago.

Eh, once you get the hang of the system, soloing a Cube in an Elite STF is fairly expectable.
