Will the Oculus Rift kill 2d gaming? Or have a huge negative impact on their future

I highly doubt game companies are going to take the Oculus Rift seriously as a gaming peripheral. It'll probably revolutionize porn but that's it.

If it's good as they say it is I think it will. People who will buy it won't be interested in purchasing 2d games anymore IMO.

Remember when they were saying television was going to kill cinema?

Hell, remember when they were saying the Kinect was going to be the future of gaming?

It actually did cause significant damage to the studios themselves.
It certainly did, but ultimately cinema's still here and arguably stronger than it's ever been. It just adapted with the times. Same thing happened with the piracy scare: at the end of the day the majority of people will pick just spending a couple of bucks to go see a movie at the cinema than watch a shitty cam torrent off of their laptop.

Really, I'd compare the Oculus Rift with IMAX. There'll certainly be developers/publishers out there who'll be interested in making games tailored around it, but ultimately it'll just be another variety of games out there on the market, with traditional, controller-based games still being a perfectly viable option. This might change as VR technology improves, but I don't see that happening for a fairly long time.

Worst case scenario, I see 2D games just becoming even more of a niche genre intended for collectors and/or enthusiasts than it already was.

The occulus rift is either going to fail completely or be resigned to a small niche of games, probably focusing on exploring an environment rather than on actual gameplay. So no, it won't kill off interest in 2D games.

Even if by some miracle it did succeed and became the new must-have peripheral, there would still be demand for 2D games, just like there always has been. There are some styles of gameplay that simply play better in a 2D environment.

Up till now we've had two dimensional 3D. Maybe now we'll get three-dimensional 2D.

You could always emulate 2D in the occulus by having you sit in front of a virtual monitor.

Yeah, and the Ouya was supposed to kill every other console :M
Seriously, the OC is a gimmick, nothing more and nothing less. And we're not counting the fact that there's an important number of people who's not able to see all those fancey 3d effects...
