Oblivion must have mods.

If you would start a first playthrough of Oblivion (Goty with the expansions and DLC) what mods would you consider to be must haves? I never ever played the game but want to give it a spin and preferably with improvements but not too much hassle. Anyone got any solid recommendations?

Personally I found the POOP collection to be pretty good for starters. Fixes most of the stuff that is shit and has a few minor content mods, too.

Might be that it's very hard to track down nowadays, though. The site seems to be down but some google searching might make you find it. It's a great modpack, with gameplay and graphics overhauls and a very good step-by-step installation manual.

And installing all the mods in that pack is almost more fun than playing the actual game.

EDIT:
Found the site.

Try to download it from there, it's a torrent, so I hope it still has seeders.

Yeah, oblivion must have mods in order to be considered even remotely playable.
:smug:

You will need some level scaling abolisher and some mod adding extra items to the levelled lists (to offset fucking lack of diversity) - many mods combine both functionalities.

You will need some combat overhaul, like Deadly Reflex, because combat in vanilla is atrocious and people considering it to be improvement over Morrowind's clunky clusterfuck are inbred morons.

You will need a mod to somehow handle the fact that unique quest rewards are scaled to your level.

Lastly, you will need any and all unofficial patches you can get your hands on.

Some head depotatifier would also be handy.

Ah, one more thing - you need to remember to click through dialogues as fast as possible - you have a quest compass to show you where to go, a journal and popups to tell you what to do and any exposure to oblivious dialogues *will* result in permanent SAN hit.

Satisfying these requirements, oblivious may be a decent mindless slaughter simulator for those days when you feel angry and need to vent, but too drained to play anything decent.

Also, try to stay in SI, rather than Cyrodiil, at least it's visually interesting and somewhat non-generic.

The previous link I posted was for the old version of POOP. This should be the right one. I have no idea if the torrent linked there still works, though. If not, just check the list of mods in the first link I gave you and download them individually. Using POOP is better though because of the amazing install manuals.

So, POOP? Found V2.1 and downloading now. Can't find any info on it so will see what's included. Hopefully at least a readme. Will look for deadly reflexes and unofficial patches.

There must be more out there though. Is Obscuro's Overhaul considered to be mandatory? Help plz.

EDIT: Thanks Jarl!

I heard that the uninstall mod is pretty awesome.

Five posts before someone laid down this ole' chestnut.

Honestly longer than I thought.

Anyway, I suggest 'The Blackwood Company' and 'The Lost Spires' for sure. One of about a dozen different versions of 'Tamriel Travelers' to liven up the roads (or even a couple of them, they work together and you get a better variety), and there's a couple mods that make lock-picking script based again. You'll need the OBSE (Oblivion Script Extender) for that one, though.

As far as I can remember, FCOM Convergence enhances the crawl(it makes use of several mods like marts monster mods, oscuros oblivion overhaul and so on). You can try the graphic extender and there are a few mods, that will place unique Landmarks.

Oh and I nearly forgot a witty remark: Sexblivion of course

POOP includes Francesco's which is a level scaling adjuster/remover too. The package includes most of the gameplay changes that remove the worst suck from the game, but I still had to manually track down in order to fix some other stuff:

a unique item level scaling remover
a sneak fix (mod's called attack and hide as far as I remember, it allows you to shoot someone then hide in the shadows/behind a pillar and the hit enemy comes looking for you instead of automatically knowing where you are; improves stealth gameplay tremendously)
a mod to make enchanted items restore their charge like in Morrowind; less micromanagement for magical items

Then I used the Lost Spires as a good content mod, and Integration: The Stranded Light, which is a content mod with the goal to build a "bridge" between Cyrodiil and the Shivering Isles, as in, a quest line that plays in both worlds.

Cool, thanks. Beside's Poop v2.1 I now have the following list.

unofficial patches
deadly reflexes
thieves arsenal
unique landscapes
natural enviroments
qarls texture pack
Darnified UI
Oblivion Mod Manager
Francesco’s Leveled Creatures and Items Mod
Attack and Hide

Will wait with the extra content and quests mods. Anyone got any other solid recommendations?

UOP
(Texture Pack) <- not necessary, but sure looks better
Darn UI
and Francescos are the most important for a first playthrough.

For the others I would at least start playing to identify what you dislike about the vanilla system.

Usually I try to at least play through once without mods, but in Oblivion I could not get myself to do it. Level-scaling proofed to be too much for me.

Half of these are in POOP already, namely the unofficial patches, unique landscapes, Darnified UI, OB Mod Manager and Francesco's.

Oh and Reneer's Guard Overhaul is pretty much needed, too. Description from the readme:
This mod changes the Guard behavior by modifying how Guards react to player crimes. If you attack a guard, only that Guard will defend himself (no other Guards will attack unless they see the fighting.) If you manage to outrun the Guards, they will no longer chase you to the ends of Tamriel. If you are sent to jail, the guards will kill you rather than trying to put you back into your cell if you escape.

If you manage to kill all the Guards that witnessed your crime, that crime gold will be removed.

If you attack a Guard from long range and they do not immediately see you, they will begin to search for you. While searching they will recruit other Guards to help them search. If any of those Guards finds you (and you have your weapon out,) they will try to arrest you.

If a Guard notices that you are sneaking around, they will follow you closely until you stop sneaking around.

Each city now has its own crime gold - meaning that if you attack someone in Chorrol, the guards in Cheydinhal will not attack you because they do not know about the crime in Chorrol.

Different crimes will be remembered for different amounts of time (typically anywhere from one game day for stealing to seven game days for murder.)

Get Integration: Stranded Light which is an AMAZING quest mod with dialogue trees, race/class-dependant quests and dialogue and tons of choices and consequences.

Hey, at least something good came out of Oblivion

Get this to improve the level-up system by removing the need to grind. Instead of the tedious "get 10 skill raises to get a x5 modifier" you just need 1 skill raise in a governed attribute.

i´d suggest getting Oblivion Xp instead which replaces the skill use system with an experience based one.

seconded. really great mod, even though it has its own set of shortcomings (no voices, typos and funny character visuals here and there).
no quest markers, skill checks, some C&C, multiple quest solutions, no unbalancing rewards, shitload of well researched lore, strong emphasis on exploration, questing and lore gathering (instead of combat), reacts and gives more depth to vanilla world/quests, no bugs, roughly 100 hours worth of content.

edit: I think this one is more up to date - it uses scripts, though, so the other may be faster

Does ii really remove quest pointers and ad written directions? It seems kind of hard to believe.

The author is a codexer :)

It adds changes to the mage and fighters guild questlines only, I believe.

I don't know if Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul is still en vogue, but it's the one mod that I needed to unretard the game enough to continue playing it (along with The Lost Spires, which is fun and very high quality -- its voiceovers are actually professional quality).

So OOO maybe, Trash.

Nearly 130,000 downloads for this crap but only 20,000 dls for the finest (IMO) quest mod for Oblivion - Windfall http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21989 - severely shakes my faith in humanity.

There are millions of pages with porn featuring real women out there and still those pathetic wankers are obsessed with pixelated versions of fake breasts. It's so udderly sad... :(

There are two fundamental problems with installing Oblivion and the 200+ mods you need to make it a supposedly "good" (but in fact grossly mediocre) game:

a) Mod Paralysis. This is a name for the bizarre condition that occurs after one takes the time to download, install and properly load order the 200+ required mods. You will find that you will play the game for maybe an hour or two before becoming bored and uninstalling it. So far as I can tell, the reason behind this condition is the fact that it soon becomes apparent to the player that the effort required to install the mods etc. is nowhere near compnesated for by the atrocious quality of the game even with the mods installed;

b) The fact the game still sucks with mods. Even if you somehow avoid Mod Paralysis, you will eventually come to realize just how crap the game is even with the 200+ required mods. It is an awfully hollow, sterile, boring game that is not fun in any sense of the word. Once you realize this you will be pretty pissed that you took so much time to try to play the game.

Seriously, having done the 200+ mods thing myself, all I can say is don't do it. If you must have an open-world game then play Morrowind or some other game, just don't do Oblivion. You will thank us for it in the end.

What Varn says is true. No matter what you will install and how hard you will try to like this game - even as just action game or action dungeon crawler - it will still be mediocre at it's best with hundreds of mods.
