We don't normally expect Jackie Chan to deliver a soliloquy on mortality or Schwarzenegger to wax nostalgic on the struggles of his life. Nor should we, since that is not their niche.

All the same, the likes of Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love or Robin Williams in Insomnia can surprise us by entering into their serious or sinister roles so smoothly, fitting like a glove.

So what has been your favourite scene of comedy or action heroes moving out of their niche and bringing powerful, heartfelt drama?

I propose Steven Seagal in On Deadly Ground as the best contender in this category.

Jack Black as Carl Denham in Peter Jackson's King Kong. Not exactly a "serious/dramatic" character but I still wasn't buying it.

Jeff Daniels, best known for costarring alongside Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber, played Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain in Gettysburg.

Sad but true, considering Daniels have actually done more drama than comedy.

Speaking of Carrey, The Truman Show and Man on the Moon.

On Deadly Ground was powerful, heartfelt drama?

It was just a jest. The scene is ridiculous, although unintentionally so.

Yup. I almost posted the scene at Little Round Top where he makes the decision to fix bayonets and counterattack. I decided not to because the youtube video included the charge itself, and in all honesty the sight of overweight, 50-something reinactors shuffling down a hill is more comical than heroic. I love Gettysburg, but unfortunately it has some pretty big weaknesses.

This may not say anything to non germans, but Dieter Hallervorden in "Das Millionenspiel" is a perfect example.

    Would brofist.

How about John C. Reilly in Gangs of New York? He was kind've playing the same routine, but with more of a dark streak. I was surprised by his performance being pretty decent.

If you don't think this was a serious performance in a serious movie then maybe you need to....

A certain scene in this movie becomes the highlight of his career. I do not think he will ever top it again.

Until the director took a risk with him in Joint Security Area, he was known only for derivative soap opera male heartthrob roles and practically blacklisted from any serious role.

He gave so much in his performance, that the movie killed him.

Jim Carrey is actually better in his serious roles. Then again I hate most comedies, especially the cheery ones.

Jack Lemmon often played a silly motherfucker but he could act with the best of them. I can't recall any "serious roles" but he did some serious drama scenes in The Apartment that I remember very well. He did do drama movies... But I haven't seen 'em. Yet.

Hard to think of any good ones that haven't already been mentioned. Favorite was Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, what a great movie.

Jeff Daniels was already mentioned for Gettsyburg, but he was perfect in Paper Man.
    John C. Reilly in Terri.
Does Ryan Reynolds count? He was great in 'Definitely, Maybe', Buried and Chaos Theory. Before that he was mostly known for the wisecracking-douche roles.
How about Steve Carell in Dan In Real Life? Not entirely serious though.

    Can't think of anymore.

Yeah, that was actually the first thing I saw him in. When I later saw his goofy character in That 70s Show I was shocked. The man's a good actor.
