13 - Feed or Die

To remind you of a period of calm, to suggest we use it to upgrade our castle's facilities. To agree on selling crops?

Make it so.

There is a clear danger in running low on food. Without food, we cannot field our army. To field a thousand troops, you need a thousand rations. Those rations would feed them for three months.

What are the options available to me?

Tanabu Castle's workshop can be converted into Drill Grounds, a Theater, a Garden, or a Shrine.

Each district has its own set of unique facilities that give benefits when built. A military district has the following:
A Drill Grounds would expand the Conscription bonus of the district, allowing more Conscription development to be done.
A Theater would provide monthly income and populace.
A Garden grants bonus to adjacent districts' Conscription bonus and increase the rate of recovery of lost public support.
A Shrine would increase public support and increases the effectiveness of Blockade by the Castle's units. Blockade is a Siege action.

This is obviously a very big decision in early game due to the cost taken to build one. I would usually recommend going for population and probably Crop yield/Conscript improvements to generate more coin/labor that is so crucial in the early game. But do not worry, the improvements are not permanent; for a cost you can destroy an unwanted upgrade and switch to a desired improvement.

Let's get a Theater going to raise cash and attract more migrants into the city.

How much is the actual income gained? Before building a Theater, this is the income for Tanabu Castle...

The bonus income is around 45 gold per month. Not bad. That translates to roughly 540 gold a year. It'll pay for itself in two years time and the rest is pure profit. With the facility done, I will now focus on developing more agriculture since harvest month is coming soon.

Harvest month arrives..

It's always depressing to see such little surplus budget available at the start of each month. But don't be disheartened, a little persistence goes a long way. Smaller clans cannot rely on monthly taxes to raise money, they sell their crops instead.

Each unit of crop sells for roughly 1 gold a piece.

If we sell too close to the Harvest season, we would get less gold per unit.
And don't think of buying when it's cheap and selling when it's high since the merchant charges 2 gold per unit of supply on average! You simply cannot out-jew the merchant.

Since the harvest season is over, I spend time developing Crafts sector to earn monthly coins.

Pay attention to how much more gold you get per turn, there's not much point in investing 100 gold and getting only 5 more gold per month. Reading monthly logs is also a good way to keep yourself updated to your officer's developments and other information.

In this particular month we learned omega21 is now a 'Ministar' and there is a district in Hiranuma Castle that can be changed.
Upon checking Tanabu Castle, I also discovered I can immediately upgrade the Theater further.

The cost is steep, but I'm curious how much more gold am I getting off this.

Only 30 more gold. What a rip off.
Oh well, time to sell more crops to upgrade.

I'm taking a big risk here, since I'm effectively down to just 1547 crops after making the sale.
In Hiranuma I can upgrade the Commercial Facility in many ways:

A Town Fair increases the Crafts development cap bonus given by the district
A Blacksmith slightly increases the Crafts development cap bonus given by the district but also improves the City's units Storm ability that can be crucial in sieges.
A Rice Dealers increases the rate of population growth and makes supplies cheaper to buy and since this district has the special bonus 'Fountain' this should be the recommended upgrade for me.

Well that's a lot of months spending a quiet time busy, now let's sit back and watch as new year comes...

Sigh. Terminate labor policy and prepare for war.

Micromanaging State Policy is key in early game since its upkeep is very expensive.
I'm going to develop the Conscription in Hiranuma Castle to add more men.

Remember the low stockpile of crops? Well, it was slightly eased by the annual tribute from the tribesmen. We have just enough ration to raise the entire garrison from both Castles.

It's eat or be eaten! Empty the grain stores!

We've hit max crops in Hiranuma, time to work on something else soon.
The captured Nanbu retainer is defiant.

No matter, he's worthless and we should let him go in hopes of meeting him in battlefield again.

Later that year, Castle Tanabu's Craftsmen District welcomes a new Blacksmithy.

With this, we're going to rock Nanbu's gates soon.

Meanwhile Omega reveals his true form.

It's time to conscript more troops in Hiranuma.

And right before harvest season arrives, the Nanbu clan make their move once more.
