N64 was an awesome console, played more of that than any other way back when.

Pilotwings, Blast Corps, Ocarina, Goldeneye, etc.

Honestly though there's a lot of things I don't like about modern Nintendo, such as just the increasing lag and difficultly of accessing Nintendo properties and ideas, multiple accounts, log in screens, just feels so much more unwieldly than when you just popped up in a game and powered the thing on, not to mention the kind of ascendance of Mario/Zelda and a few major franchises at the head of everything, digital over physical distribution.

People seem to forget the era when Nintendo was more than just Mario and Zelda, they had more diverse offerings within the kind of first party system being more of a robust affair with diverse titles.

Even today stuff like Fire Emblem is really a lot of fun and was derived from that era where Nintendo meant maybe Mario or Zelda or maybe just another Metroid.

I mean you compare E3 2004 with TP to 2014 with a few internet videos, it just doesn't feel remotely the same.

Nintendo is bringing back the NES — only a little smaller. Today the company announced what it's calling the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition. It looks just like an NES, only a lot tinier, and it comes with 30 games built-in. You can connect it to your TV via an HDMI cable, and it also includes a controller designed to work just like the iconic rectangular NES gamepad. (The new controller will also connect to a Wii Remote, so that you can use it to play Virtual Console games on a Wii or Wii U.) In addition to HDMI support and a lack of cartridges, the new mini-console also features one useful modern convenience: multiple suspend points, so that you won't have to fumble around with passwords when you start playing a game again. The NES Classic Edition will be available on November 11th for $59.99. Here's the complete list of games:
  • Balloon Fight
  • BUBBLE BOBBLE
  • Castlevania
  • Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
  • Donkey KongTM
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • DOUBLE DRAGON II: THE REVENGE
  • Dr. Mario
  • Excitebike
  • FINAL FANTASY
  • Galaga
  • GHOSTS'N GOBLINS
  • GRADIUS
  • Ice Climber
  • Kid Icarus
  • Kirby's Adventure
  • Mario Bros.
  • MEGA MAN 2
  • Metroid
  • NINJA GAIDEN
  • PAC-MAN
  • Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream
  • StarTropics
  • SUPER C
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • TECMO BOWL
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

At least it has a decent lineup of games. Good fucking luck playing the NES version of Final Fantasy 1 tho. I wonder if they have any plans of expanding their selection of games. Megaman 2 is all well and good, but I've played it to death. I wouldn't mind playing the later Megaman games even if they aren't that great (although MM3 & 4 are still fine). Needs Castlevania 3 as well.

30 years later Nintendo makes its own "9999 games in one!" console.
