Wait they did? But why?
Because there was nobody left in the studio who had the knowledge of how to maintain it. I'm sure this is true for a lot of other parts of the code as well.

Because there was nobody left in the studio who had the knowledge of how to maintain it. I'm sure this is true for a lot of other parts of the code as well.
You mean its true for the entire game?

I don't think that is the reason, right after release it caused a ton of game balance issues. I'd blame this on their dumb decision to try and integrate it with the main MMO gameplay loop, there were of course lots of ways they could have made it work, but they just abandoned it instead.

Also they have used the same custom mission system in other MMOs they have, so I really don't think its an expertise thing.

It's the reason they themselves gave in the post. Also the foundry was removed from STO as well.

Fair enough. It had some pretty cool features, they just never did anything with it. I still find it odd they'd say they had no expertise for it, I figured it must have been in some part spun off from internal tools.

For reference, I was invited, along with 19 other people to alpha test this module. We all told them before the module went live that this was not going to work and was a bad idea and they went ahead and did it anyhow.

Thats Cryptic, deadline must be meet regardless and the design is sacrosanct ... they do the same shit in STO and would in Champions if Champions actually had content added or that Magic the Gathering they are supposedly working on.

They wont change because the higher-ups are the furniture that cannot find a job in another company as if they could, they would jump ship (as many have done) and its part if the company culture, in fact expect then lauding it as "most successful yet" and similar BS.

As for the Foundry ... I suspect the real reason is they lack the staff to maintain such system, not that is LOST TECH from the ANCIENT TIMES OF THE 2000'S! as well non-existing code annotations caused by poor in any data maintenance so they would have to spend manpower (they lack because I suspect they are trying to make a new engine for the mtG game) to maintain it with something that is more that is a skeleton crew (well that one guy).

I tried this game when it first launched years ago.

I was thinking of giving it a whirl due to my fondness for the Forgotten Realms and the fact they were announcing this Undermountain expansion.

However, there seems to be a ton of negative reaction to this module, both on Cryptic forums and here. Would it be worth soloing the content just to try the main campaign and story out? Not really interested in any long-term endgame stuff so interested to hear veterans thoughts.

Hmm it depends on the modules. Some of the modules are better story wise than others, but ultimately most of the quests boil down to the standard, "kill 10, fetch 3, escort to there" type of quests. Undermountain is a little better in that regard though.

It's not cross-platform. Dirty console peasants get walled off in their own little ghettos and you don't interact with them, which means they basically don't exist. Also, you don't want any of this on you. Cryptic has taken very new-player-hostile designs in their active games and you pretty much missed everything that made participating in this dumpster fire worth doing long ago. Don't play this game, and don't play that other game either.

My suggestion is to stay away.

Though it has been years.

To not be a complete stick in the mud I'll say this - I think when they rolled out the Warlock I ended up liking that one quite a bit. As I said it has been years so I have no clue what changes / new classes / bloated extras trash has been added since then.
