Out of the blue, the ac adapter starts getting shaky, and then yesterday evening it wouldn't work at all.

Also the IPS screen of my X220 has crazy burn-in. It's a known problem, yet the Lenovo representative I talked to looked at me like I was from Mars when I told him the panel would need replacement. He then started wanting to check something in my Windows settings, and nearly refused to help me because of my Linux dual-boot. Are you kidding me? Why are you saying this and demanding my password when it's purely a hardware problem? Why won't you honor Lenovo's own replacement policies?

The Lenovo boards are full of people with tons or defects on this machine, and who stand unable to get their warranty honored because Lenovo blames them.

What a piece of garbage from a garbage company. I might well keep it as a machine only for playing old low resolution PC games, and get a MacBook retina. As fruity as Apple is, they don't try to bail out when comes the time to take care of you.

I've been on a phone only for a ray already and it's driving me mad.

If I were to get one my first thought would be Asus as it appears to be the most reliable brand today, and they have just released the Zenbook Ultras with high resolution IPS screens at reasonable prices. But the Retina screen looks like in a league all of its own, Apple has fast and efficient support, and the stability of OS X is interesting.

I'll have to try them both and make a decision.

Asus is okay. Lenovo is just as good in my opinion, in terms of every day quality control.

Before you all start jumping up and down like a pack of monkeys, bear in mind I've sold many dozens of Lenovos and I have yet to have one come back with a serious problem. The last RMA I had to do with them was for a dumbass teenage kid's model which he dropped, and it subsequently developed an intermittent system board problem, which Lenovo replaced right away.

They even overnighted me a laptop shipping box with a pre-paid (overnight) shipping label already included, so I got the thing back from them in a matter of days.

Asus is nice, but overrated. Same with HHR.

I don't know about Asus nor Lenovo, however from my experience I can assure you that HP/Compaq and Toshiba are shit and you should get whatever but them.

Crispy, is it feasible to change the fan on Lenovo Thinkpad T61? Mine is making all sorts of grinding noises every now and then and hoovering only helps for a very short while. I wasn't worried while my HP worked but since that's b0rked now... I don't have money to buy a new laptop, so any little tricks I could do at home that could extend its life would be appreciated!

Yeah, the heatsink/fan assemblies generally are replaceable. These two guys I trust:

    http://www.notebookparts.com/

    http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/

I've ordered many times from both, but they're Kwan. I don't remember where you're from but I suspect from the Hoover comment you're US also.

If you can't get the part for some reason try taking the inspection panel off the bottom, carefully unscrew and remove the hs/fan assy, clean out its dust very thoroughly, and spray its internal fan bearing with a little bit of Inox or similar electronics-safe lubricant/cleaner.

Im in the UK now, I'll see how much they charge for shipping.

Fuck, $50 even for the cheapest model, plus S/H. Yikes.

Went to an official warranty service provider. The guy fixed the power thing, but looked at me like I was from Mars when I talked about the screen. In the end he didn't want to do anything, and said he only fixed the power because this was the only problem. What a jerk. Lenovo themselves acknowledge that this is a manufacturing issue and allow anyone under warranty to get a free replacement. Even if I explained it all to him in detail, he just ignored all of it.

Anyway, it looks like people keep getting problems even after getting replacement panels, seems this panel is just cheap anyhow. Might still get another laptop. Will try to see the retina macbook just to see. Would like to see the zenlwalk ultras, but it looks like they'll only be out in the fall.

Crispy, have you ever had to repair an Asus?

File a formal complaint at the store and then elevate a copy of it directly to Lenovo. When you get the replacement, sell it on eBay and get an Asus.

Yes, but rarely. They're comparitively rare. Honestly, from what I've seen, Asus's QC with everything except their motherboards (which are excellent) is shit.

I personally would never buy an Asus laptop.

Wife went to an Apple Store to see the Retina MacBook pro. Then she sold her actual MacBook and implored me to come and see it for myself, that the screen was just so incredible it was worth every other consideration.

She was right. That screen, so lucious, so neat, it looks like a painting!

It was so good, we walked out of there with orders for two MacBooks Retina. We were told it would take a very long while to receive ours though, due to very high demand, and the fact that they have to order them with Canadian French keyboards.

Me owning a Macintosh again, after 20 years. Feels surreal...

    High end Dell and Lenovo.

For low end I have no idea. They are probably all equally bad.

In the end we got a call saying it would take even longer than we were first told, and cancelled the orders. My wife is going to use my Ipad for a while longer and decide later if she wants to re-order.

I installed an SSD in my Lenovo. Now that thing flies.

The screen thing honestly doesn't bother me that much, I'll keep it for now but we'll see.

My wife is planning to still buy a Mac Retina because they will be faster with the release of Mountain Lion, me I hold off.

I looked at the Asus Zenbook Prime models, and was fairly interested, especially because of the modest price, fairly good Asus reliability, decent keyboard and especially the 1080p IPS screen, but then I saw that the screen flickers almost like a CRT

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wv2fy-Wvd94

What the hell is this insanity, I thought that stuff was gone forever with LCDs?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlight#Flicker_due_to_backlight_dimming

To hell with LED, taking one of the best laptop screens ever made... and rendering it worthless
