They are a very religious race They worship the planet as some sort of God. They have built several temples in that sector.

So if we destroy those places...

Their faith would be shattered, and they would probably abandon the planet or commit suicide.

What do their temples look like?

Look for giant stones with inscriptions carved on them. We believe there are five main temples. If you destroy those, it should be enough.

Judging from the wording ("never returned it") sounds like the latter. He freaked out and threatened her when she attempted to break up with him, then she waited until he calmed down and left it on the drawer or something.
