Going by previous experiences then the only available places are the hut, if is not too far off and the mansion, the shrine can be the same as the woods and we can't really follow the kids to the village.
The shrine is built either near or on top of the Juunimon. Come on, where else if not there? It should be perfectly safe.

True, but let's not forget that we are stiill in the hospital area, that hut can be like some of the rooms we entered before, we enter the hut, statics happens, surprise hungry ghost.
Possible, though if we are at the very beginning there should be no malicious ghosts. I expect the simulation to respect the chronology of events.

I see two 'places of power' here - the Juunimon, and the Mansion. Strictly speaking, only Juunimon is really one, but we know the Baron attempted to use it in some way. So, the Shrine and the Mansion are two points of interest, with the Mansion being a pro-active one, the one where shit is supposed to hit the fan.

I see the current choice more as a choice of 'how do we get inside the mansion' than anything else. A guest, a prisoner, a petitioner. All of these roles will impact our relationships with its inhabitants and allow or forbid us access to a certain information we seek.

Back at using logic again.
We know that the theorethical maximum extension of the bubble we are in is more or less the area covered by Ikei Hospital, this basically means what is in sight or nearby surroundings.
We know that the Woods are SPLAT!
Consideing that the Village is not in sight I assume that is SPLAT! too.
The Mansion obviously is the focal point of this world so is 'safe'.
The Shrine is basically the Juunimon Tree so should be 'safe' as well, treave is the Shrine in sight?
Then we have the hut, that to me screams obvious trap is obvious.
Possible, though if we are at the very beginning there should be no malicious ghosts. I expect the simulation to respect the chronology of events.
If I remember correctly it was you that made the hypothesis that the statics prior to a ghost appeareance indicated an interference with the Quantum Simulation of the Experiment, and Seiji's plan seems to be what caused the phenomenon, so no, this place is not safe, because it's not time travel, or it's the kernel of the simulation or the deepest layer of the spectral world we are in, maybe both.

The Ikei Hospital is actually a complex of several facilities. It is a very large place.

Consideing that the Village is not in sight I assume that is SPLAT! too.
We are standing in the middle of it, one of the huts is right next to us. The Mansion is 'very close', and the Shrine is just down the road.

Don't worry about it, as long as we don't choose to ignore the very reason this place exists and pursue bear cavalry instead, we'll be fine.

If I remember correctly it was you that made the hypothesis that the statics prior to a ghost appeareance indicated an interference with the Quantum Simulation of the Experiment
But there should be a reason for the interference. Those reasons are usually localized to 'ghosts', the people that died there. They, in turn, are tied to certain places and timelines.

I don't think we would encounter the pool ghost here, for example.

so no, this place is not safe, because it's not time travel, or it's the kernel of the simulation or the deepest layer of the spectral world we are in, maybe both.
Think of it as less of a time travel and more of a videotape or a hard drive. We have not yet reached a place where the data is corrupted.

In any case, I suspect we are overthinking this bit. If only we did the analysis where it actually counts. *sigh*

treave, how does this miko stuff work? Are shrine maidens allowed to marry and maintain their status? When do they give their office to the young ones?

It can differ from shrine to shrine.

treave , probably it's obvious but better be sure. Ei is wearing clothes right?
If yes I would like to know of which kind.
Also, can we ask her for a suggestion on what to do/go?

What she wore when you first saw her. She says anywhere will be fine. Mostly.

The Shrine is basically the Juunimon Tree so should be 'safe' as well, treave is the Shrine in sight?

Yes, how else would you know it was down the road if you couldn't see it?

Honestly, the only reason I dislike the Shrine is the wording.

I mean, "surely the priest will be full of compassion and not jump to conclusions" is just asking for :M:M;) to be added on top of it.

I am not sure about Japanese conceptions of what is decent and what isn't, much less so if we are talking XIXth century. Would they not be angry at us running into a sacred place like that? Not to mention that the act of running for a location that is more distant than the others is bound to draw a curious crowd.

What conclusions could one jump to at a sight of a pretty, naked and scarred boy, anyway? :M

P.S. We sure are lucky this isn't a Catholic priest.

Obviously. But I rather think the possibility of a tsundere miko being there and chasing use around while shouting "pervert!" at the top of her lungs is quite high.

Just talk your way out of it.
Did Seiji-sama's divine intervention provide us with +1 Speech?

Last time we tried to explain ourselves, it went like this:
“Ah, I… I see…” You wonder if you should press him further - you get the feeling that he is not being entirely truthful with you - but Tokigawa continues to speak, taking the momentum away from you.

“I am curious, Shinoseki-san, about where you found that list. Were you digging around the hospital files before you came to the lobby?”

“I…”

“The body! That must be it! He found it on the dead body before we came in!” shouts Sakimura in realization before you can answer.

“Dead body?” Tokigawa’s eyebrows arch as he stares at you. “If you found the list there, then it would have belonged to one of the doctors in charge of supervising us trainees. I suppose they did not survive this disaster either…”

“I…”

“Shinoseki-san seemed to be scavenging stuff from the corpse,” Sakimura adds, talking over you. “We saw him with the doctor’s stethoscope. I don’t know what else he took.”

“Stealing from the dead, eh, Shinoseki?” Mori asks suddenly, his attention focused on you. “Why would you need a stethoscope? Are you trained in the use of one?”

“I…” You think you would know how to use one, but how is that question relevant to your current situation?

Without giving you time to respond fully, Mori throws out another question. “What else did you find on the doctor’s body? Was there something important that he was carrying? Something that… oh, I don’t know, people might kill over, Shinoseki?”

“I… I didn’t kill him,” you mutter quickly to defend yourself. “If that’s what you’re getting at. He died a few hours before I woke up.”
A lot of 'I's, and not a lot of anything else. :M

Though I admit that we suddenly grew a backbone when Uehara has confronted us in the next chapter. I wonder if it wasn't because it was a private conversation with someone we already knew...

I have to say, though, Shinoseki trying to explain himself while naked is bound to be comedy gold. Ei would never let us live it down.

Right after the Twelfth Night?

let me just put a training package together.
Training is so Xth century, real men just devour people to get better at things.

Eh. I'll switch back to C2 since there aren't many C3 takers and we have spread ourselves too thin.

Edit: I am seeing ghost messages. The thread is haunted, too. :|

Let me see:
A. you strike a bold pose and ask them to bring you to their leader.

Linched by the mob for being a pedo, or made leader of the village, this is Japan after all, then being sacrificed in the next Juunimon ritual because is customary.

B. You cover yourself up with your hands and try to convince them not to scream

Lynched because a babbling madman tried to corrupt innocent children.

1. The edge of the village, into the forest. You’ll figure out where to get clothes later.

SPLAT!

2. The nearest hut that seems uninhabited.

Surprise ghost.

3. The Western mansion close to you.

"Fresh meat for the ritual,MWAHAHHAHAHAHAH".

4. The large shrine down the road. Surely the priest will be full of compassion

Impaled because a blasphemous maniac with his obscene desires exposed tried to violate the shrine maidens.

It won't end well.

I would be alright with that, as long as we actually try. :M

This is Kaimei prototype. The more pedo you are, the higher you end up on the hierarchy.

The Maiden in the Hut

You run for the hut, the pebbles crunching painfully underfoot. Behind you, you hear the hushed, curious tittering of the children, wondering just who you are and what you are doing naked. As they begin to play with various theories, you dart over the threshold, closing the door behind you. You note the sunken hearth at the center of the living area: embers still stir within it, glowing red amidst a pool of grey ash. Unfortunately, the house isn’t as uninhabited as it seemed from the outside. Still, there are no shoes and sandals at the entryway, and you should be safe for a while – hopefully the children will not tell on you, or if they do, their stories will be dismissed as fanciful tales of the young.

Quietly, carefully, you walk across the wooden floor, looking around to see if there is anything you can garb yourself in. Nothing. Aside from a few iron pots and a comb, this house is pretty threadbare. Perhaps you will have better luck in one of the rooms.

“Father? Are you back?” You hear a young woman call out, and footsteps approaching the living area.

“Oh ho,” says Ei.

Panicking, you look around for a place to hide – but unless you want to run back outside, there is nowhere to go. Weighing your options, you decide to move. You may have better luck at one of the other houses. You run towards the door.

You only manage to make it halfway across the living area when the young woman appears from the connecting hallway, bumping into you. The both of you fall, and the hard wooden floor does not prove kind to your bare bottom. As you rub your back in pain, you see the woman staring wide-eyed between your splayed legs, one trembling hand held over her mouth. She has turned utterly red.

“Oh ho, oh ho,” says Ei. “It’s your lucky day. She’s pretty cute.”

“W-wait… I… this isn’t what it seems…” you stammer, trying to explain while preparing to flee the house as fast as you can. “S-sir… if it is money that you want, we don’t have any,” pleads the woman quietly. She is trembling, her face averted from your naked personage. “If… if it’s my body, I am a sickly woman, so please… don’t hurt me.” She coughs; indeed, her complexion is pale and her long black hair lacking in lustre.

Ei giggles. “You’ll be gentle, won’t you, Acchan?”

“No!”

The woman shrinks back, gasping in fear.

“N-no, I mean, that’s not what I meant,” you say quickly, stumbling over your words. “I’m just looking for some clothes. Believe me, I don’t mean you any harm at all!”

“Oh… oh, I see,” says the woman, trying not to see a thing. She gets up, still carefully averting her eyes. When you make no motion to assault her, her shoulders seem to relax slightly. “Could you wait here for a second?” She walks off into an adjacent room. You can hear her rummaging around inside. Just as you are wondering if she is looking for some sharp implement to stab you with, and if you should just run off now while you still can, the woman reappears, a bundle of cloth in her hands.

“Here,” she says, looking at the floor. “These are my father’s old clothes. If you do not mind…”

“O-Of course not! Much appreciated!” You thank her hurriedly.

“Are you really going to wear those old rags? You’re better off going bold and free,” complains Ei.

As you struggle to get the clothes on, you catch her peeking at you from the corner of her eyes. “Do all men look like this?” she mumbles curiously under her breath.

“Sorry?”

“Never mind, it was nothing,” she says, blushing.

You finally get the sash done up, and sigh in relief. It’s not a very comfortable fit, and still rather breezy below the waist, but at least you have clothes on now.

“It looks like my father’s clothes are too small for you, sir. I’m sorry, but this is the only set of menswear I have in the house,” she apologizes, bowing politely.

“No, no, I’m the one who is sorry for intruding…” You trail off, wondering awkwardly what to say next. At times like this… yes, an introduction might be a good way to start off. “I’m Shinoseki Adachi… a traveller of sorts.”

“It is a pleasure to meet you, Shinoseki-sama. My name is Maeda Yukina.” She returns the introduction with another bow. Maeda? You wonder if there is any connection – but it is a common enough surname as it is, and you decide not to put too much thought into it for now.

You see Ei lying lazily near the hearth, and point at her to continue the introductions. “Oh, by the way, that rude little girl over there is my companion, Ei. Come on, introduce yourself.”

Yukina’s eyes follow the line of your finger, and she looks at Ei in puzzlement. “Ei? There’s… no one there?”

“They can’t see me, Acchan,” says Ei, yawning.

She could have told you earlier. You flush in embarassment, lowering your hand and stretching for an explanation. “I… uh… was it just my imagination?”

Yukina can’t help but giggle in amusement, some life returning to her pallid cheeks. “I’m… I’m sorry. You’re an interesting man, Shinoseki-sama! You must be very good with children, if you have imaginary friends like they do,” she teases politely. “My little brother did that all the time.”

“I… well… it’s not exactly… never mind,” you sigh, giving up as Ei skips to your side, grinning from ear to ear.

“So, Shinoseki-sama, why are you here? Though you look like a cultured man, your manner of speech is somewhat peculiar. It is not as strange as a naked man barging into my house, of course.”

Why are you here, indeed. If your guess is right, the Sakaguchi mansion is that reason. There is also the Juunimon and its associated rituals. “I came here because of that Western mansion,” you say carefully, glossing over how you lost your clothes. “If I’m not mistaken, it is the dwelling of Baron Sakaguchi. I have some business with him.”

Yukina seems to be surprised. “The mansion? Well, a Sakaguchi family still resides in it… they just moved in late last year, in fact, but I am sorry to inform you that Baron Sakaguchi is no longer here. He died a few years ago.”

“I… I see. What happened?”

She looks away, uncomfortable with the question. “I don’t think it is my place to tell, nor could I; my father forbade me to leave the house that night. All I have are whispers and rumours. Hardly reliable. The village elder would know more, he knows everything that goes on in the village. The head priest of the Tendou shrine might also know something… his sister was married to the baron before she died.”

“What about the family currently living in the mansion?”

“You could try asking them, but they seem troubled as of late. I am not sure they would be willing to meet with a stranger at this moment, let alone talk.”

Letting out a sigh, you bow to Yukina. “Thank you for your help, and for the clothes. I will return them as soon as I find something else to wear.” You should leave before you impose on her any further.

As you turn around, Yukina calls out to you. “Please wait, Shinoseki-sama. If you do not mind, perhaps I could escort you to where you want to go? The villagers will be suspicious of a stranger, but I can explain on your behalf.”

“I couldn’t,” you shake your head. “I’ve troubled you enough, Maeda-san.”

“My mother taught me that I should always help a person in need, but truly, it would not be that one-sided,” she smiles gently. “As it so happens, I am supposed to pick up some fish and vegetables later today. If you could help me out with that…”

“Be a gentleman, Acchan,” Ei urges – you can clearly see the ulterior motives carved on her crafty young face. She just wants to tease you further.

***

A. You visit the Sakaguchi mansion.

B. You visit the village elder.

C. You visit the Tendou shrine.

***

1. You have Yukina escort you. You are a stranger, she is not. It would be easier to talk to the villagers with her as an intermediary.

2. You go by yourself. Yukina definitely has a frail constitution, and you do not feel comfortable dragging her around for your business.

Does her build and complexion look anything like the woman we've seen in the photo?

It looks like we've arrived too late. The ritual is done. All we can do is find clues as to what it was.

The inhabitants of the mansion don't wish to see us, and we don't have enough information yet to make them interested in the conversation. Perhaps the head priest would know more.

And of course we'll take on Maeda's offer. Hmm. From a family of peasants to the founders of the Kaimei group. I wonder how that went. Or are they mere off-shoots from that family tree?

It'd be terrible if they sacrificed a daughter in a ritual for fame and power, wouldn't it? :M

Quite. But who would do that? Yukina's mother was of a decent sort, which makes me feel that her father is not that terrible either. Besides, he is probably in his 50s now, and I don't see any other children around. Did I imagine things, or did she say that her little brother is no longer alive?

It also looks like her brother could see the spirits. That can't be a coincidence.

Her father forbade her to leave the house on 'that night'. Did he know anything? I wonder how Yukina's mother died.

Maeda Keiji is yet to be born in 1917. I wonder what year it is now. It looks like it is a few years after the Baron's death. The Baron married Tendou Miko in 1889. I assume she was about 20 then. She was ~30 on the photo. So the photograph was taken at around 1900.

By what Yukina tells us I don't think more than a decade has passed since the experiment, probably less. :|

All right, a few questions, to straighten out the timeline.
1) How old is Yukina, by her looks?
2) How old did the kids on the photo look like?
3) Is there any way to determine the age of the woman in the photo? Hard to do without a face, I know, but there might have been other cues.

Ei is the best thing to happen to us in the whole LP. A hintbook and a wingman in one package.

1) How old is Yukiha, by her looks?

About 20.

2) How old did the kids on the photo looked like?

Hard to judge, probably not older than 10.

3) Is there any way to determine the age of the woman in the photo? Hard to do without a face, I know, but there might have been other cues.

From her hands, she definitely isn't an old hag. Maybe the same age as Mrs. Sakaguchi, they have similar builds.
