Which was really bad design. Even when you finally realize that you're out of luck in places where people aren't shooting at you, you don't know which area to run around with unarmed while people are taking potshots at you without a lot of annoying trial and error.

Finally got that foul remnant pulled, I'm filled with enough steroids, Vicodin and penicillin to allow a paraplegic to do cartwheels. Originally this was going to be one massive post, but I've split it and tomorrow there will be an update of equal size. The LP has switched to Snes9x internal shots batch-resized before uploading, tell me if you prefer this to the old version. Enjoy!

Right, as Jake works his way through the game combat will occasionally provide Karma to go along with nuyen. Karma can be spent upon finding a bed to sleep in, upgrading Jake's abilities in various ways. First, there are attributes:
Body determines the amount of hit points that Jake has. Each point in Body adds 10 maximum HP. His body stat is 3 at the moment, and so he has 30 HP. Which is pitiful and must be rectified.
Strength determines Jake's ability to wield weapons and armor. Somehow I don't think I'll have a problem lifting whatever is available for awhile.
Charisma affects how many Shadowrunners Jake can have in his party at any one time. At its starting level, Jake can only recruit one Shadowrunner. Which is fine, because we can't afford any and haven't needed them.
A note about stats and upgrading in general; a Strength of 3 will require that many Karma points to change it. Obviously with only one Karma we're not improving attributes.
Skills:
Firearms determines Jake's accuracy with guns. The higher this skill, the more often Jake will hit. Accuracy is also affected by the gun Jake is using, but this skill boosts accuracy using any weapon. Pretty important to boost right now, seeing as I don't want to get my face shot off.
Computer governs Jake's powers in the Matrix. We're not doing a lot with them early on, so maybe a point or two here or there is fine.

On the way to the morgue Jake runs into an assassin type that's just plain annoying. Hard to find hitbox, relatively high HP for the time, and worst of all-
drops no nuyen. There've been times when all three slots are activated and taking potshots at passersby. It's best to duck into the alley or a doorway to reset the street.
Several times I've come back, and each time all it takes to be unrecognizable is another accessory? Seriously.
Being an unhelpful twat and pissing yourself in fear must take a lot more effort than I thought.
Alternatively if this game had the option to take items off I could have removed the sunglasses and solved it that way. Zombie Overlord takes what he wants!

One thing I liked when I played this game long ago is that some skills cannot be learned/obtained with Karma, you must find certain trainers and ask them for the stuff. But you'll learn about it as you progress...
PS: With Firearms 6-7 you have more than enough skill until the endgame, it's better to focus on Strength if you want to use bulkier weapons (good thing that ammo is infinite).
PPS: Also, don't try to attack innocent civilians or Dog will punish you (seriously).

Jake's health pool was enough to walk through their gunfire and shoot them in the face. But the Samurai Warrior's ranged attack hits multiple times and, yes, crits as high as eight per hit.
His close-ranged attack is less dangerous by far, maybe 2-3 per and it misses a lot.
Not that it matters. Two exchanges with that chain gun it's over. Reloaded several times and there's just no way.

Pity this game doesn't support the snes mouse (like clock tower in fact). This kind of mixed rpg/adventure gets quite clumsy without it. But on the other hand, it gives some semblance of difficulty beyond grinding to the combat
There is even a 'gun' controller option in snes9x but that is even more rare than mouse and doesn't work here.
btw, use the R1 and R2 buttons in this game (or whatever their name) - they allow examining and using objects without going into the object menu.

The finale of the game was a bit of a anti-climax, but it got pleasantly weird at the end of the credits.
Game also also overlooked dismissing shadowrunners. I had to gun down the girls i was with because they weren't strong enough for the last levels.
