Too many Portuguese characters with fair skin, blue eyes and blonde hair.

My immersion is broken.

It's a Japanese game. You should be thankful that they didn't draw Italians with yellow skin and greed hair.

The Galleon Theft, Continued

u01c001_zpsb2809018.png

Now allow me to explain the combat system. The combat is completely turn-based ( :incline: ) but you only have direct control over your flagship ( :decline: ). Movement is actually hexagonal, even though it may not seem so.

u01c002_zps44cd9292.png

The battle ends when either flagship was defeated. You can earn additional battle experience by defeating the convoy ships, but if you just want to win, it's best to just go for the enemy flagship. Unfortunately, Raphael's flagship is a bit far away, so we can't get to him this turn. We ended up shooting a Flemish Galleon instead.

u01c003_zps5fb4dee0.png

Getting hit by guns will make the victim ship lose some durability and crew. Sometimes it will lose some power and tacking as well. Guns are actually not terreibly useful in this game, since it takes forever to sink anything unless the captain is extremely experienced and the ship is armed with the most powerful guns.

u01c004_zpscb46cb84.png

On the enemy turn, one of the enemy's Light Galley decided to go melee with our ship. The result? We killed EVERYONE on their ship, while sustaining very minor casualty ourselves. The outcome of a melee is determined by many factors, including the level and stat of the captains and the number of crew on the ships. The important thing to note is that crew assigned to combat fights much better in melee than those assigned to navigation and lookout! I don't know how the NPCs assign their crew, but I'm pretty sure they don't assign all of them to combat, so we'd have an advantage over them even if their ship has more crew than ours.

u01c005_zpsfb098ff9.png

Meanwhile, Raphael's flagship has entered our movement range.

u01c006_zps4087292d.png

Let's melee them!

u01c007_zpsc5456cb5.png

When meleeing the enemy flagship, you get a prompt as to whether to challenge the enemy commodore to a duel. If your flagship has more crew than theirs, you can force the enemy commodore to duel with you. He may still accept the challenge even when his ship has more crew if he thinks he can beat you. The winner of the duel will win the battle immediately. With the right equipment, dueling is the fastest way to win battles. However, right now Catalina doesn't have any equipment at all, so we'll win by murdering all of their crew instead.

u01c008_zps778f943b.png

u01c009_zpsb1ef834c.png

On the enemy turn, the enemy flagship decided to melee back. In melee combat, the attack and counterattack occurs simultaneously, so we've already fought them twice. Also, enemy ship no.5 meleed us as well, although the other enemy ships are still busy maneuvering themselves.

u01c010_zps82a8ecf2.png

Here's the the enemy flagship after meleeing us twice. We're still outnumbered, but they've taken more damage than us.

u01c011_zps57406bc8.png

Another turn later, we're down to 47 crew...

u01c012_zps3ad6ab8b.png

...But the enemy flagship has also been reduced to 52 crew.

u01c013_zpsb3f72f3c.png

Realizing that he's about to lose the battle, Raphael attempted to flee.

u01c014_zps17b51606.png

THERE IS NO ESCAPE!

u01c015_zpsa346936a.png

We took a hit from the enemy guns. No biggies - it didn't even kill any of our men.

u01c016_zpsd3554b13.png

Lol, the enemy flagship is almost out of crew.

u01c017_zpsa666c857.png

Unfortunately, we can't catch up with them this turn.

u01c018_zps659bc14e.png

u01c019_zps941c1893.png

We exchanged fire with the enemy flagship.

u01c020_zps7c7b357a.png

Time to finish them off!

u01c021_zps94ca38b2.png

That should do it.

u01c022_zpsd70bae95.png

:yeah:
We have won our first naval battle!

u01c023_zps1c19ebec.png

The loot we got was pretty meh. But then again, the true loot we get from battles is the captured enemy ships!

u01c024_zps4eb848dc.png

You see, after you win a battle, you get to seize the defeated enemy ships, which can be sold at ports for a lot of money. Each ship requires a captain, so you can only seize as many ships as the number of mates. That's why it's a good idea for pirates to hire a lot of mates early on. Also, you can't seize any ship that was sunk with guns, which is yet another reason why guns are crap in this game.

u01c025_zps67ec023d.png

Since we only have one mate at the moment, we can only seize one ship. It's almost always a good idea to seize the biggest ships in the enemy fleet, as they tend to sell for the most money.

u01c026_zpsb9d58ab6.png

We actually get to name the ship we seized, but since we're going to sell it ASAP anyway it doesn't really matter.

u01c027_zps41c50413.png

We also get to seize any cargo the enemy fleet was carrying. Most of the times it's just some basic supplies, but occasionally there's also trading goods.

Also, note that our ship lost nearly two thirds of its crew in the battle. But it's fine, really - human lives can be purchased with money, but battle experience can't!

(Seriously it's incredibly easy to forget that the crew are in fact people rather than mindless automatons while playing UW2. At least the crew can rebel against you in UW3.)

u01c028_zps104c390f.png

We took all the supplies.

u01c029_zps52c5f542.png

Said Raphael before Catalina Executed him.

u01c030_zps0fdefd74.png

Let's land and repair our ship before we go into Ceuta.

u01c031_zpsfc6448bf.png

There're various things we can do on land. We can repair the ship using lumbers, search for water, or just wait. Wait is particularly noteworthy because waiting on land actually makes our fleet completely invicible - no storms or pirates can harm our fleet while we're waiting on land!

u01c032_zpse33e43fd.png

For now, though, we're interested in the Repair command.

u01c033_zpsa4192279.png

Here we can spend lumber to repair our ship.

u01c034_zps6c5098e0.png

Done! Our ship was only lightly damaged, so it only took one unit of lumber to fix.

u01c035_zpsb1d9ebb7.png

Let's enter the port of Ceuta, then.

u01c036_zpsd80be787.png

The shipyard is pretty easy to find.

u01c037_zps7cfd0def.png

Sometimes a NPC will tell you about a used ship for sale in the shipyard.

Upon entering the shipyard, an event was triggered:

u01c038_zpsba70c9d7.png

cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"What?"
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"Commander Ezequiel has been issued an official order from the King to arrest you."
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"I see. That isn't good news."
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"What shall we do?"
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"If you're asking me to surrender, my answer is NO."
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"Then will you fight against your own country?"
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"You can leave me now if you wish. I don't intend to force you to commit treason."
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"No, once an officer pledges his loyalty, it's for good."
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Now, that's the spirit."
...Didn't you pledge loyalty to the Kingdom of Spain when you joined the Spanish army?

u01c039_zps41a98aae.png

Anyway, the shipyard. We're here to sell off the Flemish Galleon we seized earlier.

u01c040_zpscc52a117.png

u01c041_zps55b2bf48.png

Even though we were able to seize only one ship, we still got much more profit from selling the ship than looting the enemy fleet.

u01c042_zpse706b143.png

The shipyard at Ceuta can't build any new ships at the moment. If you look at the right side of the screenshot above, you'll see that the Economy and Industry capacity of Ceuta are much lower than that of Seville. It's possible to increase both capacity of a port by investing a lot of money, but we won't do that just now.

u01c043_zps2f7d29d8.png

However, there're some used ships for sale here.

u01c044_zps6279caed.png

u01c045_zps2644cf89.png

Sadly, both of them are crappy small ships. There're tons of ships in UW2, but only a handful of them are actually worth using.

(Also, according to the Wikipedia, the Balsa is actually some kind of small ship used by native South Americans. Wat?)

u01c046_zpsdbab6f40.png

u01c047_zpseeaf54de.png

You can also buy figureheads at the shipyard. I don't remember what they do. I think they give a bonus to luck, and maybe a bonus to melee combat. Either way, a low-level figurehead like the sea horse doesn't do anything noteworthy.

u01c048_zps4b2608e6.png

You can also purchase guns for your ship here. Rebel is currently using Culverins, which can shoot far but don't do much damage. We could swap the Culverins for Cannons, which do more damage but have a shorter range. Both are pretty much crap.

u01c049_zps0c249886.png

Finally, let's change the name of our flagship to something that isn't depressingly unimaginative!

u01c050_zpsa72ae7a3.png

I decided to name our flagship after one of the Warriors of Diversity.

u01c051_zps8bdbabb9.png

Time to wander the streets a bit.

u01c052_zps74e26f9e.png

At the lodge, we can see the port's disposition towards the countries. Currently, Ceuta is allied with Portugal. We might run into problems in allied ports of Portugal if we manage to piss off the Portuguese too much. Not that it's going to stop us from beating the crap out of the Portuguese fleets. :smug:

u01c053_zps7a12ab55.png

Are those green thingies supposed to be trees? Looks like green fungi to me.

u01c054_zps847fd671.png

This is an important advice if you're going to adventure.

u01c055_zps156f9c17.png

More random historical babbling. For those who don't know, she's referring to the Battle of Ceuta.

u01c056_zpsa14a72d5.png

Important advice about duelling!

u01c057_zps8826c281.png

Trade fame is probably the easiest to raise via questing. Unfortunately, the quests tend to be banal shit boring.

u01c058_zpsb982b49b.png

Oh, and by the way: Catalina has gained some navigation experience, as well as a lot of battle experience. Generally speaking, battle experience is considerably easier to gain than navigation experience.

u01c059_zpsd8ca8710.png

u01c060_zps4372c06f.png

We may purchase information about the countries for a hilariously cheap price at the guild.

u01c061_zps7c027e87.png

Messages like this might trick you into thinking that the countries acutally interact with each other. In truth, though, they really don't - or if they do, it happens too slowly to ever be noticable. Sometimes NPC fleets will invest in another country's allied port to make it allied with the NPC's own country, but that's about it.

u01c062_zpseef9950a.png

Also, I get this impression that I'm probably supposed to purchase information about the merchant fleets so that I can hunt them down. In practice, doing this is rarely worth the trouble - you're probably better off just parking at the Strait of Gibraltar and beat up whoever comes near.

u01c063_zps4ecdfd27.png

Let's pay a visit to the pub.

u01c064_zps833b46a9.png

The pub is where we will draft new cannon fodders crew for our fleet. Before you attempt to recruit crew, it's a good idea to first buy everyone some drinks. This doesn't cost much money and will allow you to recruit much more people in a draft.

u01c065_zpsb628b595.png

Apparently Catalina is already famous after just one battle.

u01c066_zps420f0284.png

u01c067_zpsd8049441.png

Boo. Boring.

u01c068_zps49e13d75.png

u01c069_zps0681bb81.png

The number of crew you get from drafting is related to a number of factors, including your fame, rank, how many drinks you bought for the pub guys, and the port's economy capacity. Unfortunately, since Ceuta has piss poor economy, we didn't get many people.

u01c070_zps6bbbac68.png

At least low economy also makes hiring the crew less expensive.

u01c071_zpsae5357a3.png

By the way, see the "min crew" line in the ship info menu? If you don't have at least that number of crew assigned to navigtion, the ship will sail much slower. When I first played UW2, I thought I only needed to have this many crew on board, and became confused when my fleet was sailing at an almost glacial speed. Don't let this happen to you!

u01c072_zps3627de11.png

u01c073_zpsdd75d766.png

Alright, let's assign the crew to navigation and sail out.

u01c074_zps0d45128e.png

In case you've forgotten, we're currently on a mission to deliver some goods to Genoa from Algiers. Let's go to Algiers first.

u01c075_zps8350ffe7.png

Note how the cityscape looks very different from Seville and Ceuta. The game uses different tilesets for ports in different regions. It's pretty cool.

u01c076_zps91fd6d76.png

The person we want to meet with is in the market.

u01c077_zps31e3bb57.png

Hmph. Almost all trader quests are boring as fuck, and this one doesn't even pay well.

u01c078_zps25f08385.png

I still accepted to do the job because what the hell.

u01c079_zps2171669c.png

The Barbary Pirates are pretty tough people, both in real life and in UW2. Do not mess with them at low levels, or they will tear you a new one.

u01c080_zpsce70a1af.png

I'm pretty sure it also has something to do with your battle level and certain stats.

u01c081_zps82894734.png

This is also a handy thing to know, since we're going to recruit a lot of crew.

u01c082_zps0534610f.png

This building is probably the headquarters of the Barbary Pirates. In UW2 we can't even enter it, but in Gaiden it's an important place.

u01c083_zps6cc74757.png

Meet Khayr ad-Din! He and his brother (which isn't present, but I'm sure we'll run into him soon) are the Barbary Pirates the woman was talking about. They're notable for being quite a bit stronger than nearly every other NPC commodore in the game.

u01c084_zps1686160e.png

Pirate NPCs will threat you instead of saluting you when you try to talk with them. Don't get discouraged; they will never actually attack you in a pub.

u01c085_zpsd2143393.png

This Reis guy seems to be pretty famous.

u01c086_zps532148ce.png

That's a lie. You could buy him (i.e. hire him into your fleet) with drinks; it's just that drinks alone aren't enough.

u01c087_zps02250e50.png

NPCs who are already the commodore of their own fleet will never join you. This doesn't mean it's impossible to hire them; you just have to come up with a way to make them... lose their fleet.

u01c088_zpse3656445.png

u01c089_zps3c1166f5.png

We tried to recruited crew after buying 50 bottles of whiskey for everybody.

u01c090_zpsb65303fb.png

Algiers' economy capacity is stronger than Ceuta's, so we got more crew for a single draft.

u01c091_zps7342dffa.png

After resupplying our fleet, we set sail for Genoa.

u01c092_zpsdce61fe1.png

:hmmm: This fleet has been following us ever since we left Ceuta. Are they up to something?

u01c093_zps811a8eda.png

It's a Spanish fleet. Let's try talking with them.

u01c094_zpsd83f401c.png

Oh shi-

u01c095_zps01f65777.png

cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Splendid! The Spanish Fleet is all out in the bay."
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"So this is just a preliminary skirmish."

u01c096_zps1ae3edb7.png

Okay. Now, this is pretty bad.

u01c097_zps8bf92cc0.png

The enemy flagship has twice as many crew onboard as ours, and worse yet, since I wasn't expecting a battle, I didn't assign the crew to combat!

u01c098_zps6ec98d58.png

It's pretty clear that we can't win the battle, so let's run!

u01c099_zpsdbd734a0.png

The Escape command is only available when the flagship is on the edge of the map.

u01c100_zpsa6e1203d.png

u01c101_zpsceff3cea.png

Phew! Escaped.

u01c102_zps3ce98f81.png

emil_zpse45c0125.png
"It's Commander Ezequiel's Flag ship, the Santa Cruz! And look - they're signaling a message to us by flag... It says 'Your previous battle was a brave yet vain attempt. Surrender now, and you may get a special pardon. But if you resist, there will be no future, glory, or life for rebels."
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Rebels..."
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"Hard to starboard! Commodore, fleeing is the only way out of here!"

u01c103_zps5e66761d.png

We have escaped. But as soon as the Spanish fleet catches up with us, we'll have to battle again. Thankfully, we'll be perfectly safe inside a port.

u01c104_zps142a869a.png

We simply can't defeat the enemy fleet with so few crew. We need more. Unfortunately, since we've already drafted once in the pub today, the recruit command is currently unavailable.

u01c105_zps1193ab44.png

Then again, all we need to do is to spend a night at the lodge, and we could draft again.

u01c106_zps63a040f8.png

That brings the crew number up to 120, exactly what we started with. But I'm playing safe. We'll draft again tomorrow, then take on the Spanish fleet.

u01c107_zps25b18f0c.png

Oh. So that's what the figureheads do.

u01c108_zps2eb3c977.png

152 crew. That should be enough.

u01c109_zpsd6a51d3d.png

I assigned all the crew to combat before going into the battle.

u01c110_zps13982dd3.png

u01c111_zps9a760857.png

To arms, then!

u01c112_zps9c98c200.png

The battle plan is the same as the last time. Charge their flagship, murder all the dudes.

u01c113_zpsd7ac5793.png

After one round of combat, we're almost on equal footing with the enemy flagship.

u01c114_zps97555830.png

Another round of combat brought their crew number down to 47.

u01c115_zpse309dcda.png

This time, it's they that are fleeing from the battle. Let's see if we can finish them off.

u01c116_zpsb344f71a.png

Dammit. Their ship just remains outside our melee range!

u01c117_zps343fcb86.png

Eventually, though, we were able to catch up with them.

u01c118_zps8260f043.png

:yeah: :yeah:

u01c119_zpscae31cf6.png

u01c120_zps151346fd.png

u01c121_zpsc0340558.png

We seized some gold and another Flemish Galleon from our enemies.

u01c122_zpsb60da689.png

We also loaded some supplies onto our ship.

u01c123_zps1b8319d7.png

Unfortunately, it seems like we're being cornered by the invisible Spanish ships.
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"This may be the last battle for us... Emilio, I regret that I got you involved in my personal grudge."
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"That's OK. It was my choice to join you. I'll accompany you till the very end."
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Attention crew, prepare to assault the enemy."
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"Commodore, something is strange about the way the enemy is moving. It seems as if they're retreating..."

u01c124_zpscac25962.png

cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"They're fleeing!"
Ooh, it's like the Battle of Chibi all over again.
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"What a stroke of luck! We're saved! Wait, what is that, drifting over there? It's a Spanish officer! He's clinging to a piece of driftwood."
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Pull him up on deck."
andr_zpsf9321b3e.png
"Whew, thanks for saving me."
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"You are now our prisoner. State your name and rank."
andr_zpsf9321b3e.png
"Huh, don't be so pretentious, pirates! My name is Andreas Paella. I'm a lieutenant in the Spanish Navy. You should also know that I'm the one who saved you. I set that fire."
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"That's an obvious lie. Why would a stranger save us?"
andr_zpsf9321b3e.png
"Oh, I see you don't have too much of a memory. But then you've probably met a hundred crazy drunks at the pub."
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"Oh, you're the crazy drunk from the pub!"
Somehow that line made me laugh way harder than it should've.
andr_zpsf9321b3e.png
"You must be wondering why I saved you. Well, Miss Lady Pirate, I was a school buddy of your fiance, Hernan Obregon. Even though he was from a noble family, he was still a good guy. He was very kind to people like me who grew up in poverty. That's why I decided to save you. And I'd like to join your mission, too. So let me work for you, Commodore. I'm quite useful, you know."
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"What should we do?"
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Welcome aboard, mate."
andr_zpsf9321b3e.png
"Thank you, Commodore! We'er going to make a great team!"
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Don't get me wrong. You might be useful to me, but I don't completely trust you yet. If you give me the slightest reason to suspect you of betrayal, it's all over for you."

And so we got another companion! :yeah:

...I don't trust this guy. He's got a villain's face.

u01c125_zps4fc89296.png

Oh, also Hugo said something. I don't blame you if you'd forgotten that he existed.

u01c126_zpsde118f4e.png

Upon entering the shipyard of Algiers, another event was triggered.
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"What is it? About Commander Ezequiel again?"
andr_zpsf9321b3e.png
"No. It's about our enemy."
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"Duke Franco disowned his son, Joao Franco, who is now traveling the high seas."
andr_zpsf9321b3e.png
"If that's true, then we're in luck. If Joao is in Lisbon, we can't approach him. But if he's out on the sea, we'll have plenty of opportunities to attack."
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Andreas Paella!"
andr_zpsf9321b3e.png
"Uh, yes, Commodore?"
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"I, did you hear that, I will destroy the Francos. Try to remember that. No one is going to interfere with my revenge."
andr_zpsf9321b3e.png
"I understand, Commodore."

u01c127_zps45ebf514.png

We sold the Flemish Galleon for some cash.

u01c128_zpsca1bac73.png

The building with a vase sign (is that a vase?) is the item shop. Let's go take a look.

u01c129_zps30582403.png

Different item shops sell different things. Some ports doesn't have an item shop at all.

u01c130_zpsd291f489.png

There're two kinds of items for sale, a cutlass and some lime juice. The cutlass is a piece of duel equipment, which makes you do better in duels. A D-rank weapon isn't worth buying, though.

Lime juice, on the other hand, is a consumable item that cures scurvy. It's fairly useful, so I bought a few bottles.

u01c134_zps0251c7d0.png

From now on, Catalina will be asking pretty much everyone she come across about Joao's whereabouts. Try get used to that.

u01c135_zpsfa6e50c6.png

u01c136_zpse5fd8424.png

u01c137_zpsfd68957f.png

It's probably going to take a while to find him, though.

u01c138_zpsf598109c.png

Finally, here's one of the more well-hidden secrets in the game. You see, most buildings are closed during the night, and the item shop is no exception. However, if you attempt to enter the item shop at around 2:00 AM...

u01c139_zps1d14e340.png

In addition to the usual business hours, item shops are also open for about two hours in the midnight. If you enter the shop during this period, you may be able to purchase secret items. Unfortunately, the item shop in Algiers doesn't have any secret item for sale.

u01c140_zpsfe85fdb9.png

Before we leave, let's take another look at Catalina's character sheet. She has gained even more battle experience, but sadly hasn't gained a level yet.

u01c141_zps53fb64c3.png

And here's the character sheet of our new mate, who for some reason is still shown as "loyal to Spain". He's considerably more experienced at battle than Catalina and Emilio.

u01c142_zps7aaea00a.png

I assigned Andreas to the job of Chief Navigator. To be honest, I don't even remember what Chief Navigator does, but I think he makes the crew fight better in melee, which is very handy.

Next time: Catalina doesn't murder 500 people in 8 days. Probably.

I take it the outcome of the battle with Hugo would be the same even if you'd lost? Except for loot, of course.

Yes. Flee twice, and the event triggers. You're not really supposed to be able to defeat the Spanish fleet at this point of the game, but hey, in a game like UW2, breaking the game is more or less the whole point.

Oh man I'm so glad that you asked. UW3 is by far the best game in the series. There're so many good things about UW3 that I don't even know where to begin with.

First off, UW3 is much more historically accurate than any other UW game. Where the other UW games has fictional characters, almost every named NPC that appeared in UW3 also actually existed IRL. Yes, that means you can meet up with Christopher Columbus, Leonardo da Vinci, Queen Isabellla I, as well as some less famous historical figures like Jacques Cartier and Diogo Lopes de Sequeira. The world politics is also closer to what it actually was like in the 16th century world, so, for example, we have Republic of Genoa/Venice instead of Italy, and Kingdom of England/Scotland instead of Britain. UW3 is also only UW game to feature a dynamic world - as in-game time passes, NPCs appear and disappear, nations rise and fall, new cities are established, and historical events may occur. UW3 is still far from perfectly accurate, but considering that the game was made by a bunch of Japanese dudes in a time without Wikipedia, it's quite impressive.

Of course, historical accuracy alone won't make a great game. UW3 offers great gameplay as well. First off, you can actually customize the protagonist here - a massive :incline: from UW2, although in UW4 the feature was removed again. The gameplay puts a heavy emphasis on exploration and adventures. This doesn't mean you can't play a pirate - the naval combat is more or less the same as UW2, except less broken. Adventuring, on the other hand, has being completely reworked. In UW2 adventuring is quite simple: sail around until you find a village, then explore until you find stuffies. In UW3 it's a lot more complicated. In order to find something, you have to first read about it in libraries, which requires you to have the corresponding language skill, and may have other requirements as well. Then you might want to find someone who is willing to sponsor your expedition. Then you will have to gather infomation about your objective in the pubs. Finally, land travelling is usually required to actually reach your objective. Yes, land travelling is actually a thing in UW3 - there're inland cities, as well. And unlike in UW2, every discovery has an scripted event associated with it in UW3. Sometimes it's quite minor, but sometimes you'll have to solve puzzles or defeat monsters. There're tons of cool shits to find, ranging from famous structures like the Potala Palace and Temple of Luxor, to mystical beasts like vampires and krakens. Then, when your protagonist grows old, you can woo barmaids and have kids. Once your son have grown up, you can retire and then continue playing as your son.

UW3 is also the only UW game that doesn't give two shits about being politically correct. You can, among others, beat up some Indian chieftain who tries to stop your men from colonizing his homeland, conquer the Ottoman Empire, commit genocide on the Aztecs, and engage in the highly profitable activity of slave trading (before they decided that's too extreme and patched it out). Also, no female captains in this one! :incline:

Sadly, the ignorant manboons were unable to appreciate this master piece, and as a result the game sold extremely poorly. This is probably why UW3 was never ported to any console. And why every single game in the series after UW3 was shit.

UW3 is certainly not without faults. The UI is clunky, and finding things can get tedious at times. Still, if you can read Japanese/Chinese/Korean. You should definitely give it a shot. There aren't many games that plays like this one, and the few which does aren't remotely as well made.

Oh for fuck sake.

Thanks for the info nevertheless. Sounds like a hell of a game.

And whats wrong with female captains? You don't like living out the revenge of a cute Eighteen year old spanish soldier who looks nothing like a spaniard?

Seems like a game I'd want to at least try out. Do you know where I can find it (other than on amazon)? I'd like to see if this one could get a place in our translation waiting list :)

I like the censor job on the SNES version, it replaces all alcohol with other things (Nothing like treating a pub full of sailors with grape juice, tea, fish and chips). Also, Emilio calls Andreas a "Crazy philosopher," instead of a drunk.

Yeah, I didn't know about any future games past 2, but now that I know about it, UW3 sounds fucking amazing. Too bad it would be hell to play untranslated.

Those who could translate it are too obsessed with either Kawaii uguu~ , hentai or both to ever do a fan translation of Uncharted Waters 3.

:decline:

Check your PM.
It's such a pity that all Koei makes anymore is dynasty warriors games.
False! They've only just announced UW5 a few weeks ago:

I got excited for half a second before I saw the word "browser".

Pretty sure that's not the group they were trying to avoid giving offense to. I recall having to hide Diablo from a friend's mother because she'd have freaked out over it. 3 guesses as to why.

Though I think the whole 'CHILDRENS CAN'T KNOW ABOUT ALCOHOL OR DONGS!' thing is just a bipartisan american thing.

One of my most favourite games in SNES (I also played the PC version though) along with EVO

Cannons are fairly good, if you can study gunnery from some guy in Hamburg. Your Bravery needs to be fairly high though (I think you increase it by duels or attacking ships).

Actually Ali's playthrough is fairly good if you just want to experience of the game without being constrained by plot-related shit. Most of the time, I just go straight to the Nile for the villages, sell them (not to that stingy Egyptian though fuck that asshole), take cartography and just explore around the world for villages until such time I can afford to go pirating.

Also I love how in this game:
how some rogue Portuguese noble is trying to form a huheuehueh Neo-Atlantian pirate empire and that the original Atlanteans are niggers chilling in Massawa :troll:

I think we might be able to do something with UW3:

I have yet to discover where the story files are located, but the free roaming part of the game is totally doable.
Anyway, UW3 is now officially on my todo list :)

:yeah:
UW3 doesn't have much of a story at all. The most text-heavy parts are libarary books and discovery events.

Also, about the LP: sorry for the delay. I'm writing the update now, next update should come in a few days.

Beware all of you picking Ali. You will experience about fifteen updates of buying carpets in Istanbul and selling them in Athens, then buying art and selling it in Istanbul. It's the best trade route in the game, but dull.

Almost forgot, but this is totally wrong.

The best and arguably far less monotonous way to make money with Ali is to go away from this but instead, once you have around 10 to 20k to fund it, do a lot of exploring and adventuring, not forgetting to chart all North Europe ports too(you'll see why), finding hopefully some villages with * rated discoveries. Or if you're crazy enough, become an Ottoman privateer and hire a lot of mates to build up a lot of gold selling captured ships, although doing that with Ali is crazy, and then:

1) Visit Cairo to hire Zaganos(he is really useful even for Ali) and appoint him as bookkeeper.

2) Buy a tax permit from the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, preferably in April or October to take maximum advantage of it.

3) Buy a fast ship(or more than one if you can afford while keeping at least 150 ingots) with the biggest cargo hold you can: La Reale, Frigate or Tekkousen, in order of least to most useful. Note: The last two require investing a lot of gold in one of the British or Flemish and in one of the Japanese shipyards, respectively, and the French ports might lack enough Industry to build La Reales and also require investment depending on when you do it.

4) Invest in any East African port, preferably Sofala, until such port has gold for sale.

5) Buy as much gold as your ship(s) can carry in East Africa while having enough food and water for about 10 days of travel,

6) Check the Log of Goods and Zaganos will inform specifically where in North Europe you will be able to sell the gold for the highest price.

7) Head to the north European port Zaganos mentioned, and sell all your gold in it.

8) ???

9) Profit!!! Now invest some of it, preferably in the always heavily disputed Mediterranean, to gain trade fame.

I'm always amused how Italy is the bitch of other powers in these game (just like real-life eh? :troll:). When I'm playing as Pietro, I defect almost immediately once I got a noble title to Portugal (since you're working for the Francos anyways).

Sorry for the schedule slip, I was busy with, uh, other activities. Won't happen again. Promise.

Cheating A Bank In Two Steps

u02001_zps92c63a12.png

Off we go. In case you've forgotten, we're on a quest to deliver some fishes to Genoa.

u02002_zps567a2c68.png

We "discovered" the port of Palma on our way.

u02003_zps63d3e9b3.png

It didn't take too long for us to get to Genoa.

u02004_zpsa1dfd954.png

Another event was triggered when we entered a random building.

cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Is it about Duke Franco or Commander Ezequiel?"
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"Duke Franco. I've heard that the Prince of Portugal is missing right now. Some people say Duke Franco may be involved."
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Oh really? How so?"
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"Well, they say Duke Franco plotted to eliminate the Prince so his son Joao could take the throne."
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"If that rumor is true then Duke Franco is a real villain."
andr_zpsf9321b3e.png
"He's worse than we pirates!"
Leon Franco was a pirate!

u02005_zpsf9e2dbf2.png

It's possible to buy silver in Genoa. Catalina doesn't really care to trade, though.

u02006_zpseeb67ae6.png

This is true if you don't want to do battles, but if you do, then it's a good idea to keep as many crew on your ships as possible at all times.

u02007_zps0d8827fe.png

u02008_zps521222ea.png

u02009_zps78279137.png

More random NPCs.

u02010_zps147cea8f.png

We took the goods to the market. Unfortunately, we can't even get our reward yet. This quest is way too much trouble for 1000 gold coins, I tell you. In fact it's probably the worst quest in the game.

u02011_zpsb1cbc7f0.png

Here's the goods list of Genoa.

u02012_zpsa9888881.png

We also went to the shipyard to check if there's any good used ships we can buy.

u02013_zps8e65ecc9.png

u02014_zps16bbe955.png

u02015_zps31f8bab0.png

u02016_zpsba294663.png

There isn't, sadly. What we want is a mederate-sized fast ship. None of these ships fill the bill.

u02017_zps130106ca.png

We can also order new ships in the shipyard. Unfortunately, new ships take a long time to build, and I'm an impatient guy, so we probably won't bother with this option.

u02018_zps7e04c2ce.png

Also, Genoa is the capital of Italy, so there's a palace here.

u02019_zps3f2b25f7.png

Well it seems like we're pretty famous!

u02020_zpsb555cf6f.png

Here, we can meet with the ruler or defect to the country. If we were a noble of this country, we would also be able to ask for gold and ships here.

u02021_zps26be8016.png

We'll meet with the ruler first. Sphere of Influence tells us which ports are allied to this country. Letter of Marque allows us to ask for a letter of marque. You can't ask for a letter of marque unless you're loyal to this country. The Tax Free Permit, on the other hand, can be requested by anyone. The permit is only effective in the country's allied ports. You typically have to pay a lot of money to get a permit, and it only lasts for about half a year. Since Catalina isn't really interested in trading, this option is also useless to us.

u02022_zps61b5e583.png

u02023_zpsc3849cd8.png

u02024_zps333d5946.png

u02025_zps8fa232a1.png

To be honest, all these infomation are quite useless.

u02026_zps9c61b5fb.png

You can also defect to a country at their palace.

u02027_zps1523b038.png

Defecting to another country can render the game unwinnable in some circumstances, so doing so is not advised.

u02028_zpsa581b12a.png

Anyway, let's visit the bank! Most of the commands here are pretty self-explanative.

u02029_zpse5a54189.png

Right now our credit line is hilariously thin. I think the credit line increases when you rise in rank, but I'm not completely sure about that.

u02030_zps680d75f4.png

Of course, we can also deposit money here.

u02031_zpsfdeff492.png

I deposited most of our money at the bank. The reason of doing so will soon become apparent.

u02032_zps5a152e36.png

Before we would venture into the Uncharted Waters, it's a very good idea to improve our luck first. The main way to raise one's luck is to donate to the church. I don't exactly remember how donations work, but I believe the increase in luck is related to BOTH the absolute value and the proportion of the donation (i.e. the increase is larger if you donate all of your cash at once).

u02033_zpsed9b621d.png

To max out your luck with the least amount of money spent, you should deposit most of you cash into the bank, leaving only a few thousand coins on you, then donate them all at the church.

u02034_zpse6d997e8.png

Next, withdraw a few thousand coins from the bank, then donate them again. Repeat a few times and your luck should be maxed out.

u02035_zpscb2a0fe6.png

Of course, don't forget to withdraw your money after doing all of these.

u02036_zps3c570b6b.png

Our next stop is the item shop.

u02037_zpse9e6374e.png

Using a measuring instrument on the seas will tell you the longitude and latitude of your current position. It's very useful, but since I'm quite familiar with this game I don't really need it right now.

u02038_zps1e73639a.png

The Velvet Coat is an accessory item. These items are close to useless.

u02039_zps06d20892.png

Also, we went to the local fortune teller's to have Catalina's fortune told. It seems like she has indeed maxed out her luck. :incline:

u02040_zpsf9e44886.png

u02041_zpsc647cc87.png

While we're at it, I decided to have Andreas' fortune told as well. Seems like he's pretty lucky!

u02042_zps7f15d22d.png

Let's check out if there's any good navigator for hire at the pub.

u02043_zpsbdb015ab.png

As I've said before, NPCs who is already the commodore of their own fleet will never join you, so don't bother.

u02044_zps10223d13.png

Roberto and Nicolo are the only vagabond sailors here. Let's try hiring them.

u02045_zps8c573d47.png

u02046_zps550afe52.png

Hurrah! They both agreed to join our team! :yeah:

u02047_zps37e28540.png

We went to check the item shop again at 2 AM, but I apparently forgot to take a screenshot of the merchandise list. I don't think there was anything of importance.

u02048_zps2ddf18b7.png

It's time to sail out again.

u02049_zpsfd857dae.png

Let's pay a visit to Marseille. It's close enough to Genoa, after all.

u02050_zpscc6f558b.png

Somehow, Roberto managed to level up after less than a day of sailing. That reminds me, I've yet to take a look at the character sheets of our new mates.

u02051_zpsb8e35d12.png

Roberto here has pretty terrible stats across the board. He's also nominally loyal to Portugal, but the truth is: once one has gotten aboard on our ship, he will be loyal to us, and only to us.

u02052_zps53c4f355.png

Nicolo only has slightly better stats than Roberto.

u02053_zps45362da0.png

If you aren't reading a FAQ (or this LP), this should be how you find out about the secret merchandise in item shops.

u02054_zpsa7940570.png

Sometimes you might find an item shop (or any other building, really) in a port that is larger than normal. They may look pretty, but they aren't functionally different from the same type of buildings in other ports.

u02055_zpsa649bbba.png

u02056_zps2f2904b3.png

The local item shop has a pretty poor selection. Treasures are as useful as accessories, which means they're also nearly useless.

u02057_zps8b47d747.png

u02058_zpsa3899d35.png

u02059_zps8f9557f0.png

The shipyard doesn't have any good ships for sale either.

u02060_zpsd2d0c002.png

We're running out of cash, so let's withdraw all of our money from the bank.

u02061_zps1d84cebb.png

The secret item here is the Estock, a B-rank weapon. B-rank equipments aren't amazing, but they're good enough to be worth using, and they don't cost much. There're better ways to spend money in the early game though.

u02062_zps72b308bc.png

Our next stop is Barcelona.

u02063_zps0f1dd652.png

Ooh, there's a cartograhper in this town!

u02064_zpsfe68f039.png

Well, let's go to the shipyard.

u02065_zpsdc8b46cd.png

Eh?

u02066_zpsde66490e.png

Oh shit.

You see, since we're officially traitors now, we're going to run into problems in Spanish ports. Every time we enter a building in a Spanish port, we must succeed a dice roll or we'll be recognized.

u02067_zps75214532.png

If we're recognized, we'll get another roll to escape from the mobs. If we failed again, we'll lost most of our cash.

u02068_zps5f262fc9.png

Thankfully, we managed to escape this time.

u02069_zpsa70a88db.png

This is what usually happens when you enter a building in a hostile port. The first mate warns you about this, but you don't get recognized.

u02070_zpsa04ada7f.png

It's in Barcelona that we finally found what we're looking for: a La Reale!

u02071_zpsee1e91cd.png

The La Reale is a bit small to be a battleship, but it's very fast (it's one of the fastest ships in the game), requires relatively little manning, and since it's a galley it can sail fairly fast even when sailing agianst wind. These traits make it the ideal ship for adventuring.

u02072_zps3c5b0d57.png

We attempted to buy the ship, but we couldn't afford the money.

u02073_zps653f835a.png

We haggled a bit with the master of the shipyard.

u02074_zpsfad417fe.png

Unfortunately, he wouldn't accept the price we named.

u02075_zpsc36cc581.png

If the shipyard master rejects your offer twice, you get kicked out of the shipyard and can't enter again for the duration of a day.

u02076_zpsbdb0a1aa.png

This must be the residence of Diogo.

u02077_zps21cc1437.png

Cartographers are a special type of NPC. If you sign a contract with one of them, you can get rewarded with money and adventure fame for mapping out the world. For the protagonists who need adventure fame, this is critically important; for those who don't, doing so still provides some nice extra cash.

u02078_zps4813c22e.png

The problem is that your protagonist must have the Cartography skill in order to sign a contract with cartographers. The good news is that any cartographer NPC can teach you the skill for a fee.

u02079_zps5b878709.png

u02080_zpsb85c48c1.png

u02081_zps0606adc9.png

The bad news is that Catalina is too dumb to be a cartographer. :rage: God knows how long it will take to raise her knowledge score to 75. We will probably never bother.

u02082_zps069ebd29.png

Here's the local item shop.

u02083_zpsbcb622b2.png

u02084_zpsb83238c0.png

The dagger and leather armor are shit equipments that are pretty much never worth anything.

u02085_zps1d270bac.png

The balm, on the other hand, is one of the most useful items in the entire game. It actually calms down a storm. No, it doesn't make sense. I bought a few bottles of those.

u02086_zps79236e06.png

On the next day, we returned to the shipyard and attempted to buy that La Reale again.

u02087_zpsf39d7f59.png

Unfortunately, it turned out that the shipyard master wouldn't settle for anything less than 35,000, which is more than what we can afford. Oh well, we'll return later.

u02088_zpsfb4f8ba0.png

Let's check out Valencia next.

u02089_zps5ff1d33b.png

u02090_zps13087fec.png

The item shop here has some lime juice for sale. Other than that, nothing interesting.

u02091_zpsc32b1645.png

u02092_zps29a0e644.png

Back at Algiers, we finally collected the reward for our quest. In addition to the money, we also got 200 trade fame for completing the quest.

u02093_zpsfb8a9fb4.png

We went to check if there's any new quest available at the guild and saw a Collect Debt quest. This type of quest is important as it's related to one of the most ridiculous money exploits in the early game.

u02094_zps6414a353.png

We took the quest and set sail for Venice,

u02095_zpsf2ee29c6.png

Discovering the port of Ragusa on our way.

u02096_zps4ab2275a.png

We reached Venice after a few days.

u02097_zpsdf2964ca.png

The Marco Polo bank in UW2 is a true amazement. It's apparently the biggest banking dynasty in the 16th century, with branches in literally every corner of the world, from the Americas to China. It's also ran by a bunch of retarded fuckwits - you'll see soon.

u02098_zpseda60f30.png

Incidentally, Venice is probably the largest and coolest city in UW2.

u02099_zps94e89dfc.png

A blue bird sign denotes one of importance. Let's pay him a visit!

u02100_zpsf8e0651e.png

u02101_zpsdcdbb03e.png

u02102_zps5ed16435.png

However, as soon as we entered the building, an event was triggered.

u02103_zpse202f004.png

Seems like we'll have to check out the shipyard first.

u02104_zps81f464df.png

emil_zpse45c0125.png
"Those two people are being attacked by that huge mob of pirates!"
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Andreas! Emilio! Let's save them!"
dude3_zps717df493.png
"Hmph, you're pretty tough. Hey guys, it's time for you to take care of the kid!"
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Not if I have anything to say about it!"
dude3_zps717df493.png
"Who in the blazes are you?"
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"A pirate, like yourself. But not so vile as the likes of you, to attack two people with so many men."
That's right. Catalina prefers to win by abusing broken game mechanics instead!
dude3_zps717df493.png
"A lady pirate?! Ha, you're that Spanish traitor, aren't you!
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"No one has survived a duel with me. On guard!"
Uhh, sorry Catalina, but you haven't actually duelled anyone yet.
dude3_zps717df493.png
"Blast! You'll regret this!"
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Pirates have such a limited vocabulary. Can't they ever say something original?"
jarl_zps717df493.png
"Thank you very much. You saved my life."
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Don't mention it. You're Portuguese, aren't you?"
jarl_zps717df493.png
"I am Joao Franco. As a token of my thanks, I'll play a song on my lute for you."

u02105_zps9a8d39b2.png

jarl_zps717df493.png
"What's the matter?"
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"I am the sister of Commodore Michael Erantzo of Spain. You are responsible for his loss. Prepare yourself for my fury!"
jarl_zps717df493.png
"W, Wait! I don't understand! Why do you want to fight me?"
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"No more stalling. Pick up your sword!"
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"Commodore, just a moment. I heard something outside."
easy_zpsca990099.png
"Pirate Catalina, I know you're in there. You're under arrest by orders of the King of Spain, Carlos I. Throw down your weapons and surrender!"
...When did YOU get here?
cata_zps6e756ce0.png
"Ugh, I could almost... Listen kid, you were lucky this time, but next time we meet, revenge will be mine!"

u02106_zps04c66792.png

Catalina then managed to flee from Ezequiel's invisible Spanish army. Again.

u02107_zps58ed416f.png

Well. That was some fun detour, but let's not forget what we came here for.

u02108_zpse97e0589.png

u02109_zps52a0fcc2.png

u02110_zps196eee80.png

Hmph. This is just another fetch quest that doesn't even pay well... OR IS IT?
:smug:

u02111_zps8fc9fdcb.png

u02112_zps41ee8755.png

Remember the building with a blue bird sign before? Turns out it's just the residence of another cartographer.

u02113_zps5b1a9d5b.png

Now, we're on a quest to collect some debt from a dude called Antoine Fitch. We've no idea how should we do it though. Maybe the waitress at the pub would know something?

u02114_zpsd86ca7a6.png

The first two options here are used to increase your standing with the waitress. Investigation is used to acquire infomation about NPC fleets. Ask info is used to acquire other infomation. Sadly, wooing waitresses didn't become possible until UW3. I'm pretty sure that Catalina is straight anyway.

u02115_zps4fee22da.png

A waitress will reject your request for investigation unless your standing with her is high enough.

u02116_zps8cfc4c72.png

u02117_zps188bce07.png

Let's try treating someone, then.

u02118_zps6b28868c.png

u02119_zpsdbd542b5.png

Sadly, it seems like nobody here knows anything about Antoine.

u02120_zps941fd3ca.png

u02121_zps277b3154.png

u02122_zps09e2326c.png

There's also a single unhelpful navigator at the pub.

u02123_zps441e0564.png

It's 2 AM so let's check out the item shop again!

u02124_zps09fa1dfb.png

u02125_zps9fd4b5ac.png

Shitty C-rank equipment.

u02126_zps0ba241b0.png

Sextants are basically the same as quadrants, except more accurate.

u02127_zps01b5cbc8.png

u02128_zps52e91e58.png

More shitty items. Treasures and accessories have precisely one use (other than being sold in shops): you can gift them to waitresses to raise their standings with you. It's generally unwise to spend money on this though.

u02129_zps5304ec15.png

Maybe someone in another port will know something about Antoine?

u02130_zps1453ed61.png

Let's check Ragusa first.

u02131_zpse51bfaf1.png

u02132_zpsc856c243.png

u02133_zpsc3da2e3c.png

Nope. Nobody here knows anything about Antoine.

u02134_zps5021901e.png

And the item shop does in fact have a poor selection. What a lackluster port. :decline:

u02135_zps1a11538a.png

Next up is Naples.

u02136_zpsbc2b53e0.png

Ooh, another special NPC.

u02137_zpscb44320e.png

Here's Juliano's home.

u02138_zps6521810e.png

Meet Professor Juliano. He plays an important role in Gaiden. In UW2, however, he just teaches the Celestial Navigation skill.

u02139_zps10847b86.png

u02140_zpsbe29424d.png

u02141_zps60b0eec6.png

Unfortunately, Catalina is once again too dumb to understand the art of astronomy. :x

u02142_zps0d5b8c71.png

Good thing that Catalina can just have the men do all the stargazing for her. :troll:

u02143_zpsbd379632.png

We met an unemployed navigator in the local pub.

u02144_zps952ae15f.png

u02145_zpsdd86cdf5.png

Sadly, none of the people here knows anything about Antoine either.

u02146_zps8b504cd0.png

The unemployed navigator agreed to join our team though! :incline:

u02147_zpsf6e9e933.png

His stats aren't amazing, but we don't care.

u02148_zps92a8a446.png

For some inexplicable reasons, the item shop of Naples is located in the middle of a forest. Do they even get any customers?

u02149_zps046ea6fa.png

Some intersting items for sale here.

u02150_zpsba5eac39.png

The leather armor is still crap.

u02151_zpsceeb72fa.png

Rat poison is another useful utility item. We bought a bottle.

u02152_zps9861c012.png

And then... there's the Crusader Armor.

The Crusader Armor is a piece of ☆-rank equipment. ☆-rank equipment are the most powerful in the game. All of them makes you practically invincible in duels, and all of them costs an exorbitant amount of money to buy. We'll definitely come back for this armor when we've enough money. For now, though, we have more pressing matters to attend to.

u02153_zps5e2dc5a7.png

u02154_zpsf84861d8.png

Upon entering Pisa, Dante gained a level. Nobody cared.

u02155_zps008a8b91.png

u02156_zps203e982e.png

Ah, so there's an possible sponsor in this town!

u02157_zps11ff2b71.png

Also, have a look at the Upright Tower of Pisa.

u02158_zpsfc97ec3b.png

This must be the residence of the Duke.

u02159_zpsae6b9b57.png

Let's try signing a contract with him.

u02160_zpsea2c0a87.png

u02161_zps050e1748.png

Now, the sponsors. These are the helpful people that helps turning your discoveries into money. Basically, you find something, report it to your sponsor, and you get money and fame! It's strongly advised that you find a sponsor before you would go adventuring.

u02162_zpsf8cc08ce.png

We now have a sponsor! :incline:

u02163_zps1320b9aa.png

u02164_zps7e79eece.png

u02165_zpsf98f2308.png

u02166_zps861d5f63.png

If asked, your sponsor will also give you clues about where to find villages (and therefore discoveries).

u02167_zps63bd4f00.png

u02168_zpse0c26863.png

Also, we finally learned the location of Antoine! :yeah: Our trip to Pisa has been a fruitful one.

u02169_zpsd23674d1.png

u02170_zpsc22952e8.png

u02171_zps2b7fcce7.png

u02172_zps99e3d5d7.png

The item shop had some nice things for sale, although we didn't buy any.

u02173_zpsdf8ce0ed.png

I decided to autosail to Bordeaux.

u02174_zps1af54c92.png

The journey took ten days. Dante gained another level.

u02175_zpsf1d64773.png

Aha! Antoine is indeed here! But wait, I see another navigator called Jacob. Let's gossip a bit with him first.

u02176_zpsd1de123e.png

u02177_zpsef93808d.png

We welcomed Jacob into our fleet.

u02178_zpsef24331b.png

Now, Antoine Fitch...

u02179_zps3ea8a98d.png

u02180_zps60d88c21.png

Well, that was easy. Sometimes the debtor will run away when you tries to collect his debt, and you'd have to track him down again.

u02181_zps71689dac.png

Anyway, here's Jacob's character sheet. His stats aren't terribly exciting, but he knows the Accounting skill, which is very valuable.

u02182_zpsa553894f.png

I appointed him as our bookkeeper immediately.

u02183_zps22c1b59d.png

By the way, there's another possible sponsor in Bordeaux. Since we're already in a contract with the Duke of Modena, there's not much reason to bother with him.

u02184_zps133d97be.png

Mmm, Bordeaux wine.

u02185_zpsb3f00331.png

At the beginning of each month, we'll have to pay the wage of our mates. It's a pretty negligeable expense.

u02186_zps7e9c5a67.png

They say one has to know one's enemies, so let's take a look at Lisbon!

u02187_zps3affae5c.png

Duke Franco sure lives a luxurious life, huh.

u02188_zps51750cc1.png

We went to the shipyard to check if there's a La Reale. There wasn't, sadly.

u02189_zpsb60ccc67.png

This is Duke Franco's mansion. Is... is that thing supposed to be a kennel?

Anyway, let's pay a visit to the Duke! I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

u02190_zpsc786b7f2.png

emil_zpse45c0125.png
"That doesn't sound fair."
marc_zps81726362.png
"May I help you?"
emil_zpse45c0125.png
"No. No, thank you. No surprise attack, of course. Excuse us.
marc_zps81726362.png
"Hummm, they're a suspicious lot..."
Duke Franco is actually a possible sponsor, but due to obvious reasons, Catalina can't sign a pact with him.

u02191_zpsbde47415.png

Well, that was fun. How about we check out the pub next?

u02192_zpsa3831bbe.png

As you can see, Lisbon's pub is quite crowded. It's the capital of Portugal after a-

Wait. Who's that?

u02193_zps49fa1112.png

Didn't you just get Executed by Catalina an update ago? I'm pretty sure you did.

u02194_zpsa1aa299f.png

Incidentally: while most navigators prefer to hang out in the pub, sometimes you'll find navigators at the lodge as well. We didn't bother hiring any of the people here, though - Catalina already has a lot of mates. There's a hard cap as to how many mates you can have, and getting rid of bad navigators can be surprisingly tricky.

u02195_zps4b0bb9d3.png

u02196_zpsb5e9c47f.png

There's a Telescope for sale in the shop here. The Telescope is an useful item that gives a big bonus to the fleet's lookout range. With a Telescope, you probably don't need more than a few crew assigned to lookout anymore.

u02197_zps683f760c.png

Well. Now, I said before that the Debt Collection quest is related to one of the most ridiculous money exploits in the early game... And now I shall demonstrate how to do the exploit.

See the five ingots we got from Antoine Fitch? They look shiny, don't they? Do we really have to return them to the Marco Polo bank?

Well, we don't. We can easily claim the money for ourselves. The exploit is quick, simple, and utterly retarded.

Find a branch of Marco Polo bank (NOT the headquarters in Venice!) and deposit most of your money there.

u02198_zpsbab36413.png

Then, go back to the headquarters in Venice.

u02199_zpsf1e2b9cd.png

The banker scolds us, and the quest is terminated.

u02200_zps88d4be94.png

What did we lost? Well, 100 points of trade fame, and... that's it, actually.

u02201_zps279b8846.png

Now go back to the bank and withdraw all the money, and we're done.

That's correct. We just prevented the Marco Polo bank from taking our money by depositing the money in their bank.

You'd think there's some punishment for doing such a ridiculous exploit, but there really isn't. In fact, if we wish, we can take another Debt Collection quest from the guilds and do the exploit again. Because the bankers at the Marco Polo bank are retarded.

Well, I believe now is about time that we went adventuring. A good place to start adventuring is the Nile. There's lots of things to discover and very little risk.

u02202_zpsaaa0d0a1.png

We discovered a village when we're sailing for the Nile. Finding a village is a very good thing for an adventurer, since village means discovery!

u02203_zps0502f74f.png

We landed on the village and were presented with several options. I'll explain most of these options later. For now, let's search.

u02x001_zps4bd5ae3b.png

Ooh, ancient civilization!

u02204_zps988474f9.png

We have made our first discovery: the Rosetta Stone! Sadly it's a D-rank discovery, so it's not worth much.

u02205_zpsa16c31e9.png

Before going down the Nile, we should resupply at Alexandria.

u02206_zps055a1b08.png

u02207_zps62da87fe.png

Patriotism is overrated. Catalina only cares about vengeance!

u02208_zpsf7ec0393.png

Most ports in Western Asia have mosques rather than Christian churchs. For Muslim characters (only Ali), mosques are functionally identical to churchs. Christian characters can't enter mosques.

u02209_zpse139302e.png

Fun fact: you'll automatically convert to Islam if you'd defected to Turkey.

u02210_zpsa8625f1a.png

u02211_zpsee60e5b1.png

There's also another possible sponsor here.

u02212_zpsd5c7b614.png

We should buy some items now that we have the money.

u02213_zps4fc5ae98.png

u02214_zpsda14c985.png

Catalina bought herself a set of half plate and a scimitar. These equipments are hardly amazing, but they'll have to do for now.

u02215_zps40725356.png

We also bought a sextant.

u02216_zpsc9b16b86.png

Catalina equipped the half plate and the scimitar. She'll be able to actually win some duels now.

u02217_zpsababa865.png

Alright. It's time for ADVENTURES!
:yeah:

Next time: Catalina journeys around the world.
