Outstanding. Resume ambush positions!
02.jpg

And the provoked commander rushes down the walls once again, into the waiting arms of Xiahou Yuan...

03.jpg

yuan.jpg
So glad we could meet again. Let's finish this.
04.jpg

05.jpg

rk.jpg
Alright! Let's empty the vaults and move out!
06.jpg

rk.jpg
Guo Jia. How fast can we retake Wan?
guo.jpg
Judging by our tactical advantage and officer quality? A month?
rk.jpg
No. Two weeks. One to breakthrough Xu Chang, the other to smash into Wan.
07.jpg

guo.jpg
Ooookay.
08.jpg

xing.jpg
Betrayer! How dare you show yourself!
rk.jpg
I'm in a hurry, stand aside.
guo.jpg
Outnumbered and outmatched. Yes, this is over in a week.
09.jpg

rk.jpg
Heavens have no place for simpletons like you!
10.jpg

11.jpg

rk.jpg
Take him out.
zhong.jpg
Lean into the blow, motherfucker.
12.jpg

yuan.jpg
Charge!
13.jpg

xing.jpg
Difen! You coward! I'll get you! Cross the river and bring me his head!
14.jpg

rk.jpg
Pathetic. Fish him out and let's go.
15.jpg

16.jpg

guo.jpg
Four days, you're ahead of schedule.
17.jpg

Barely a week after the capture of Wan, the garrison still has no leader.
The lightning raid ravages any momentum the Yellow Turbans offensive might have had.

18.jpg

Wan's militia crumbled within four days.

19.jpg

Barely a year has passed since the revolt begun, and already they control seven cities.

To create a Divine Commander worthy of being written down in history, hardships must be piled up before him until they seem like an impassable mountain range.

And then he has to climb it without safety gear.

So yeah, I would vote for pissing off as many people at once as possible.

Searching for my kidnapped sister
That is a great idea to have everyone buttfuck your force from beginning. Kinda like Liu Bei at Xu.

But my intent is to become the giant among pigmies. Whenever a force potentially could get bigger, we nibble off a city of theirs. The idea is to play aggressively defensive in a strategic scale. Force them to attack us at our wall then use reinforcement from main city to smash their invasion, therefore eliminate their own roster of captains and readied troops.

Begin your report on the traitors.
02.jpg

advisor.jpg
They have taken control over major cities in the Central Plains.
03.jpg

advisor.jpg
Pu Yang, Chen Liu, Xu Chang, and most recently Wan. Xiao Pei continues to be unoccupied. Our prefects in the region dare not advance.
liang.jpg
And why not?
advisor.jpg
My lord, Shi Difen's talent pool is immense. He has over three dozens capable scholars and generals with him. Recruits are flocking under his banner.
liang.jpg
Is this true?
04.jpg

05.jpg

06.jpg

11.jpg

15.jpg

18.jpg

guard.jpg
Yes, Lord Zhang. Our scouts have reported over thirty thousand conscripts joins their cause each day. New units are being established and reinforced in every city.
07.jpg

advisor.jpg
A massive undertaking has started in Wan as well. It would appear Shi Difen is planning a massive city expansion of Wan.
liang.jpg
WHAT! Why do we sit idle while this occurs? Where was the initiative?! And how?! How can he afford all this?!
08.jpg

09.jpg

10.jpg

advisor.jpg
My lord, Shi Difen has plundered no less than six cities' worth of treasury. Grains and gold is no concern to him now with season after season worth of tributes pouring into his coffers.
12.jpg

13.jpg

guard.jpg
Our prefects have tried their best at gathering intelligence but found no weakness. The enemy have erected checkpoints at most routes, delaying any possible advances - ensuring enough time to respond if we dare to attack.
liang.jpg
And where is Shi Difen now?
16.jpg

guard.jpg
Scouts have reported they're advancing towards Wu Gate, west of Wan.
liang.jpg
What is his army's composition?
guard.jpg
80,000 elite marksmen. 20,000 veteran infantries. Shall we respond?
liang.jpg
No, don't bother.
advisor.jpg
My lord?
liang.jpg
The scholars say warfare is a balanced game of counter-strategy. Footmen get trampled by horses, arrows slay hordes of cavalry, while legions of shield-bearers overwhelm the marksmen.
advisor.jpg
These are true, none of them are strong enough to overcome the other single-handedly...
liang.jpg
You overlooked one thing: deaths ravage morale, rob units of experience. Only one unit is capable of destroying their enemies while retaining their numbers consistently. Even Crusader Kings quake in terror at such retinues of death...

The gate is ours. We can now push onward to the west.
rk.jpg
Not yet. We should return to Wan for resupply.
04.jpg

Check out the amount of stipend I had to give out. 12,800 gold in all. That is why a single city's income will never suffice.

05.jpg

Food is a non factor. And the expansion of the city adds a new bonus: The Marksman Upgrade.

06.jpg

The best of the archers upgrade - it requires 500 EXP Crossbowmen to be eligible.
Able to fire one tile further, the marksmen is also capable of piercing shots, damaging any unit within the line of fire and going so far as to slaughter even units taking cover behind gates. This effect is still retained when switching to the fearsome Siege Tower.

I've already thought about this game's poor balancing, and simply cannot understand how the Infantry is supposed to sustain a 4-tile ranged attack that could wipe thousands within one turn of concentrated fire, wrecking morale and lives utterly without sustaining a single casualty. But whatever - I could try banning archery and still go for the cheesy fog assault strategy, but that'll just slow us down and not actually force me to re-think.

rk.jpg
The Marksmen will be the last thing they'll ever see..
guo.jpg
Shall we proceed westwards?
07.jpg

rk.jpg
Yes, send a small force to move ahead and construct a camp.

Building a camp is not a bad idea. They serve as mini-fortifications around the map, slowing down advances and therefore more time for defenders to respond. They also give bonuses. Any troops standing by in the camp gains morale while further upgrades adds more defense points and grants passive income bonuses if you control the city nearby. Enemy cities that has its 'battlefield' encroached upon will have their income reduced as well.

08.jpg

rk.jpg
Good. Now we can move on towards Chang An.
09.jpg

rk.jpg
Guo Jia, will the Yellow Turbans finally make their move?
guo.jpg
Quite possibly so. Zhang Liang's cornered in the west - they have no allies. Ma Teng and Dong Zhuo will relish seeing them fall.
rk.jpg
Gather the men and let's move out!
10.jpg

yuan.jpg
Men! Assemble and move out!
11.jpg

Four days later, on the road to Chang An...

12.jpg

chong.jpg
My lord! An enemy force has moved in from the north, they are being led by Tian Feng!
rk.jpg
Guo Jia, your thoughts?
13.jpg

guo.jpg
A last ditch attempt to prevent us from isolating their sovereign since Ji Ling's tiny force has not yet completed construction of the Camp.
rk.jpg
Then we'll give him time by routing these fools. Chang An will have to wait.
chong.jpg
Men! Lock and load! We're heading into an engagement!
guard.jpg
Yes, Sir! Death to all who dares to oppose us!

A lady friend of yours?
rk.jpg
No, Guo Jia. Just one of those fairies I came across while commuting.
guo.jpg
Why not approach her?
rk.jpg
Guo Jia, I am content... How's the troop deployment?
guo.jpg
Way to change the topic - anyway. We're ready. A river divides us.
15.jpg

rk.jpg
Too easy. Tell the men to wait at the extreme edges of the stream. Let them come to us.
16.jpg

Men! Proceed with caution!

Fear not Master Tian Feng! I, Zhou Tai will bring back the traitor's head!

It would appear Tian Feng's army is just the first wave of attack, scouts have reported that Xiahou Dun is on the move to dismantle our camp.
rk.jpg
Funny. I guess they really wanted to remove this blockade.
guo.jpg
I think they've realized your intention of cornering Lord Zhang Liang.
rk.jpg
Guess we'll have to delay the attack for now. Standby at the Camp and prepare to engage.

Don't worry, Master. I'll show my brother the error of his ways.

I've got a question too - what is the mechanic behind the chance of success in recruiting someone after capture? A vs. Charisma check? Is it influenced by the friendship stat that could be achieved before conflict?

There's no clear formula over it, but relations play a part. And each officer actually has a personality (brave, greedy etc) and list of interest (warrior/scholar/collection) that kinda influences it a bit.
If you've killed any of his relative and he has declared you a nemesis, there's no chance of that happening ever.

But to be honest, the roster is only important in early game where you need talent to execute peace time orders effectively aka the 'more bang for buck'.
And Intellect actually influences action points while in battle so bringing in stupid generals will only make your army less effective and even more vulnerable to provocation and other bullshit tactics.
Contrary to many people's beliefs, WAR rating is actually only effective in duels and not in actual warfare of leading men, where LDR (Leadership) actually plays more part. But a high WAR can protect a leader from getting injured from flames and charging tactics during warfare, so it's not good to have it too low.

We will advance towards Chang An as the outpost construction commences.
yuan.jpg
A wise move. I've finished upgrading the latest batch of Crossbowmen.
02.jpg

rk.jpg
Good. Let's take Chang An and corner Zhang Liang.
03.jpg

guo.jpg
Still no movement from the enemy's rear. But their northern forces are a spent force. We've obliterated no less than 150,000 of their army in one month with negligible losses.
rk.jpg
Let them keep casting their eggs at our iron walls. We've come too far to pity these fools. Onward!
04.jpg

yuan.jpg
Sir, a message from Outpost Construction team - the northern Turbans have responded.
05.jpg

 Fine. Let's sweep them aside.

Li Tong, you may have bought Zhang Liang another week but know this, his death is inevitable.

At once, My Lord!
