Xvart dealing 12 dmg? Hmm. It seems that with 2E health levels You are going to die a lot later in the game to random criticals from stronger enemies.

[captain obvious]Probably 6 is xvart's maximum damage (1d6 short sword), doubled by 'insane' difficulty level.[/captain obvious] Yes, random crits from stronger enemies will mean instant death, but book-swapping +2 CON should help with that a little.

I've ditched the reload count, because posting it all the time got silly. I will just inform in narrative when when reload in other situations than dying happens.

Nah, coz of the helm crits won't be an issue. Too bad you play on Tutu, BG1 mirror image was about equivalent with BG2 stoneskin and you would benefit greatly from that.

Great LP. It's often very funny.

A question, how much time do you spend doing an update? On absolute, but also comparing to time of play?

This is the Avatar I have used since I joined. I changed it when I started the LP to my Char avatar but since it seems like it's going to be long time until I finish I changed it back. Plus someone already uses that avatar and I know it would irritate me if someone started using mine.

It takes me easily two-three the time played to make an update. Mico is not editing pics like you or myself and has only one char plus the disembodied voice to create lines for so I'm sure he does it quicker.

I must have joined after You switched to Lord Paco then. Thanks for the explanation.

Actually, no. I takes about 30-60 minutes to play through an area, and about 2-3 hours to write an update (x1.5 if I do it on my shitty netbook), so writing easily takes at least 75% of time.

Did you install the BETA Patch version 26499 Throne of Bhall patch before installing BGT? There are people on the net saying it breaks spawns.

I only installed BG1, TotSC, BG2, ToB + official patches, and then tutu. That's all. I'm guessing that by BGT You mean Baldur's Gate Trilogy? I don't have that version.

Update #11: Gnoll Stronghold

up11_Baldr000.jpg

Yes, noble codexers, it's that time of the year again - we are getting another book of statboosting. This time it's going to be Charisma, located in a cave beneath Gnoll Stronghold.

codex_m.jpg
Aren't You giving away too much?

People aren't here for the plot, but to see You die in funny ways.

codex_m.jpg
Oh yeah? I bet you then, that I will not die in this update!

O RLY? :smug:

codex_m.jpg
Yes. Gnoll Stronghold is piss easy for someone as awesome, talented and experienced as me. I shall cut through it, like a warm knife through butter! Of course, you are obliged to use optimal tactics.

Ok. And if You lose the bet?

codex_m.jpg
I will agree to do something terribly stupid that you tell me to, without any bitching. But, if I win...

Yes?

codex_m.jpg
You'll get me invisibilty spell and we will avoid any combat that doesn't net me good XP and loot.

Ok. You're on.

up11_Baldr002.jpg

We are amb... waylaid by gnolls on the way.

codex_m.jpg
Nice reflexes on speech check there.

up11_Baldr003.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ow! Mother-Fucker!

Critical hits suffered...

codex_m.jpg
No! No more of that shit!

Ok, ok, only joking.

up11_Baldr004.jpg

Gnolls die quite easily, but...

up11_Baldr005.jpg

codex_m.jpg
What is with all these double ambushes? Is the winter wolf gnolls' pet, or what?

Or they were his pets... no, wait, that makes even less sense.

up11_Baldr006.jpg

Uh... it seems that I have won our bet.

Death count: 40

Reloading.

codex_m.jpg
NOT. A. WORD.

You do realize...

codex_m.jpg
YES. Let's move.

up11_Baldr007.jpg

This time the ambush is set by a pack of dogs. Poor, innocent...

codex_m.jpg
No matter what you say, they die.

Bastard.

up11_Baldr008.jpg

Some kobolds appear after a second or two.

codex_m.jpg
Totally unexpected.

up11_Baldr010.jpg

What do you think? Two deaths before even...?

codex_m.jpg
Shut up!

up11_Baldr011.jpg

Criti... joking, joking.

codex_m.jpg
You're so funny I almost shit my liver out from laughing.

up11_Baldr012.jpg

You know, that critical hit counter might actually be useful in this update...

codex_m.jpg
Fuck you! Just... fuck you.

up11_Baldr013.jpg

The Codex bravely defeats some poor dogs and shitty kobolds, suffering only moderate wounds in the process.

codex_m.jpg
I think I would like you to stop narrating for now.

up11_Baldr014.jpg

We are waylaid once again on the way, but this time by a non-hostile bear, which we ignore.

codex_m.jpg
What? My free XP!

Don't get all whiny, you've almost reached level cap anyway, and we haven't even started doing the plot yet...

up11_Baldr015.jpg

And another ambush. Ghast this time.

codex_m.jpg
What the fuck is going on today? Did a black cat fall into a waterfall and hexed me, or what?

up11_Baldr016.jpg

It's not alone, of course.

codex_m.jpg
Ghast cooperates with gnolls? Now, that's just fucking stupid.

up11_Baldr017.jpg

We get surrounded by gnolls on purpose, to stay out of ghast's reach, and kill it, thanks to superior attack range.

codex_m.jpg
Good job, sword!

up11_Baldr018.jpg

Killing the gnolls gives us our long-due level up.

codex_m.jpg
Yes!

up11_Baldr019.jpg

Finally at the stronghold.

up11_Baldr021.jpg

Area entry stats are also level up stats this time.

up11_Baldr022.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Level 3 spell? Sweet!

Too bad, we haven't found any so far...

up11_Baldr023.jpg

Over 51 000 in kill-XP out of total 60 000 XP gained. Somebody try to tell me this game is quest-based...

up11_Baldr024.jpg

As said, we don't have any 3rd level spells yet.

up11_Baldr025.jpg

We try to rest, but are interrupted by a gnoll.

codex_m.jpg
Well, it is gnoll stronghold.

up11_Baldr026.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Mwahahahaha! Slaughter!

up11_Baldr027.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Fuck. Another one! I just want to rest a bit, ok?

up11_Baldr028.jpg

codex_m.jpg
This is what you get for lack of respect for The Codex.

up11_Baldr029.jpg

We manage to rest at third attempt.

up11_Baldr030.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Geezfuck! Is everybody set on making reaching the stronghold difficult for me?

up11_Baldr032.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ow! You shit! Now I have to rest again! DIE!

up11_Baldr033.jpg

codex_m.jpg
And you too!

up11_Baldr034.jpg

One of the bridgekeepers had magical gloves.

codex_m.jpg
Cool! What do they do?

up11_Baldr036.jpg

They set dexterity to 18.

codex_m.jpg
What? They decrease dexterity? What a useless item!

up11_Baldr035.jpg

The other one dropped some potions. Never hurts to have these, even if for sale.

up11_Baldr037.jpg

And one of them might actually prove useful.

up11_Baldr038.jpg

A quick 112-hour rest.

up11_Baldr039.jpg

We finally enter gnoll stronghold island and meet... xvarts.

codex_m.jpg
You've got to be fucking kidding me.

up11_Baldr040.jpg

codex_m.jpg
DIIIIIIIIIIIE!

up11_Baldr041.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I KNOW THERE ARE MORE OF YOU FUCKERS THERE!

up11_Baldr043.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Dreaming sweet? I sure hope so!

up11_Baldr044.jpg

codex_m.jpg
'Cos you'll never wake up again!

up11_Baldr045.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Is this the cave?

Not sure. Haven't played this game in quite a while, you know. Probably wouldn't touch it again if not for this LP.

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, yeah, spare me the details. 'I don't know' would've sufficed.

up11_Baldr047.jpg

codex_m.jpg
:rage:

up11_Baldr048.jpg

codex_m.jpg
NO MORE FARTS! I'M SERIOUS!

up11_Baldr049.jpg

Of course, there's nothing more here. This cave exists only to provide us with yet another encounter with our beloved smurfs xvarts.

codex_m.jpg
:rage:

up11_Baldr050.jpg

codex_m.jpg
GEEZUS FUCK! NO!

up11_Baldr053.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, yeah, boom-headshot.

up11_Baldr054.jpg

codex_m.jpg
NAAAAAAW! THATZ NOT TROOOOE! THATZ IMPUSSIBAAAAAAALL!

up11_Baldr056.jpg

codex_m.jpg
SLAUGHTER!

up11_Baldr057.jpg

I'm betting there are xvarts inside.

codex_m.jpg
Don't even say that!

up11_Baldr058.jpg

codex_m.jpg
:rage:

up11_Baldr060.jpg

Dear audience. After a small offscreen brainstorm, our hero and I have decided, that we will leave all further images of xvart-fighting without any written comment, just with a random emoticon underneath.

Here's the first one: :)

up11_Baldr061.jpg

Wow. There's actually something else here but xvarts.

codex_m.jpg
I hate carrion crawlers, but anything other than those blue abominations is welcome!

up11_Baldr062.jpg

Not wanting to be stunned and devoured alive, The Codex treats the crawler with it's own medicine.

codex_m.jpg
Here's wand of paralyzation for you! Like it?

up11_Baldr063.jpg

Crawler is easily killed afterwards.

up11_Baldr064.jpg

Three guesess as to what we'll find inside.

codex_m.jpg
I don't even want to think about it.

up11_Baldr065.jpg

:(

up11_Baldr066.jpg

:D

up11_Baldr067.jpg

I think we've hit the jackpot.

codex_m.jpg
I hope you're right! :bounce:

up11_Baldr068.jpg

Yes!

codex_m.jpg
Yes! :bounce:

up11_Baldr069.jpg

This should make You a little less repulsive.

codex_m.jpg
Go on. No amount of your trash-talk can spoil this moment for me. :bounce:

up11_Baldr070.jpg

The tome is used immediately.

up11_Baldr071.jpg

Charisma is raised to 9, which increases NPC reaction modifier from -2 to -1.

codex_m.jpg
I wonder...

Yes?

codex_m.jpg
I knew this chick once. There was sort of mutual atraction between us, if you catch my drift?

I'm not sure I want to, but go on...

codex_m.jpg
Well, to make long story short, she decided to blind herself to make it work, you know, physically, between us, but the spell misfired a bit. I wonder where she is now, and if she has regained her sight.

Thank you for sparing me the details.

up11_Baldr072.jpg

A quick 80-hour rest before we continue.

up11_Baldr073.jpg

:/

up11_Baldr074.jpg

:?

up11_Baldr075.jpg

up11_Baldr076.jpg

up11_Baldr077.jpg

:salute:

up11_Baldr078.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Nooooo! Sword!

Luckily, we have a spare this time.

up11_Baldr079.jpg

:P

up11_Baldr080.jpg

:o

up11_Baldr081.jpg

up11_Baldr082.jpg

;)
Oh, sorry, that's a gnoll.

codex_m.jpg
Gnoll? Where? Wow! A real gnoll! I missed you guys so much!

up11_Baldr085.jpg

codex_m.jpg
You die so much better than those fart-things!

Farthings?

codex_m.jpg
What?

Nothing, I just felt a sudden urge to play Drakensang.

up11_Baldr087.jpg

The Codex got wounded somewhere somehow, so we stay for a short 16-hour rest.

up11_Baldr088.jpg

More gnolls.

codex_m.jpg
As long as it's something other than farts, I'm happy.

up11_Baldr089.jpg

codex_m.jpg
NO! SWORD! NOT YOU TOO!

Broken Sword 2: The Smoking Mirror.

codex_m.jpg
What?

Forget I said anything.

up11_Baldr090.jpg

It's not much of a problem to kill one gnoll with the short sword, but we can't go on like this.

codex_m.jpg
Any ideas?

Sure. We have the option to travel to Friendly Arm Inn, and buy new... I mean, rebuy the same swords, but repaired. It counts as backtracking.

codex_m.jpg
Great! Let's go!

up11_Baldr091.jpg

We are waylaid by gnolls on the way.

codex_m.jpg
I wonder what else appears in one second.

Let's guess.

codex_m.jpg
I'm betting wild dogs.

Kobolds.

up11_Baldr092.jpg

Mountain bear.

codex_m.jpg
We both lost. Lame.

up11_Baldr093.jpg

Will you make it with the short sword?

codex_m.jpg
Sure, but it will take a while...

up11_Baldr095.jpg

Indeed, The Codex wins, although not without being hurt.

codex_m.jpg
It's just a scratch.

up11_Baldr096.jpg

The non-hostile bear is ignored.

codex_m.jpg
No chance for a second level up in this update, so yeah, let it live.

up11_Baldr097.jpg

The swords are again ours. More excess stuff is sold.

codex_m.jpg
Wow, these gauntlets are quite expensive for such a useless item.

Not everyone has 19 dexterity, You know.

codex_m.jpg
I know. I just wanted you to admit my awesomeness in this regard. :smug:

up11_Baldr098.jpg

We are waylaid on the way back too, of course.

codex_m.jpg
Gnolls!

Ghast!

up11_Baldr100.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Who's the boss? :yeah:

up11_Baldr101.jpg

They are quickly defeated.

up11_Baldr102.jpg

Back in stronghold, we explore the northern part of it now.

codex_m.jpg
Come to daddy, little doggies!

up11_Baldr103.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Bad hyena-dog-man... thing. Die!

up11_Baldr104.jpg

Finally, we enter the stronghold itself.

codex_m.jpg
I'm guessing it's all gnolls from here?

up11_Baldr105.jpg

Something wrong with all gnolls from here?

codex_m.jpg
Well, I am a little bored with fighting them too.

I might have an idea for that.

up11_Baldr106.jpg

We find another shield spell scroll. This time The Codex manages to scribe it successfully.

up11_Baldr107.jpg

A quick rest.

codex_m.jpg
What about that idea you mentioned?

up11_Baldr108.jpg

Let's stealth the shit out of this place!

codex_m.jpg
I like!

up11_Baldr109.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Don't mind me guys. Just passing through.

up11_Baldr110.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Let me just slip past here... thanks.

up11_Baldr111.jpg

codex_m.jpg
They won't even see... SHIT!

It was bound to happen, sooner or later.

codex_m.jpg
I will just fuck them all up instead then!

up11_Baldr112.jpg

codex_m.jpg
All of you suddenly feel very sleepy!

up11_Baldr113.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Oh yeah, I am so awesome!

up11_Baldr114.jpg

Two gnolls manage to wake up before killed, but they're not a problem

up11_Baldr115.jpg

Not letting ourselves be discouraged by some bad luck, we continue the stealth-exploring.

up11_Baldr116.jpg

This is the main mob. Orange one is gnoll chieftain - the closest thing to a boss here.

up11_Baldr117.jpg

The Codex reason-defying stealth skills allow him to sneak into the pit...

up11_Baldr118.jpg

...just in time before hide in shadows fails.

codex_m.jpg
Who's the chick?

Oh, it's Dynaheir. There's a quest to free her from here.

codex_m.jpg
Sweet! How much XP do we get?

No XP, I'm afraid. She's a companion.

codex_m.jpg
I'm not freeing her for nothing!

up11_Baldr119.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Yeah, lady, better have something to give me for all the effort.

up11_Baldr121.jpg

I'm afraid that's not the kind of companionship You'd like it to be. She also doesn't have any equipment.

codex_m.jpg
Fuck her, then.

up11_Baldr122.jpg

The remnants of Dynaheir's dialogue, sorry for not catching it with the portrait, but I'm not reloading for that here.

up11_Baldr123.jpg

We continue the stealth-explore, encountering more gnolls.

up11_Baldr124.jpg

Another luckily-timed failure.

codex_m.jpg
It was all planned.

Of course.

up11_Baldr125.jpg

There's a gnoll on top here, and Your stealth failed again.

codex_m.jpg
I have an idea. :smug:

up11_Baldr126.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Let's kill it!

Your creativity is simply smashing.

codex_m.jpg
More like slashing and stabbing, amirite?

Ok, seriously now. It would be kind of lame, if we explored whole fortress without killing gnolls inside.

codex_m.jpg
I've just killed one. And even more earlier, when hide in shadows failed.

You know, that's not what I mean.

codex_m.jpg
What do you mean then?

up11_Baldr132.jpg

Something like that.

codex_m.jpg
If I survive this, I'm going to fucking kill you!

Didn't You say that gnolls aren't any kind of challenge anymore? Prove it!

codex_m.jpg
Ok. Watch this!

up11_Baldr133.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Stay in line, boys. No pushing from behind! There's plenty for everyone!

up11_Baldr134.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Ahahahaha! BURN!

up11_Baldr135.jpg

codex_m.jpg
For all of you that survived, I have a bonus!

up11_Baldr136.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Not feeling sleepy? THEN DIE!

up11_Baldr137.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Oh, yeah! I am so cool right now!

up11_Baldr138.jpg

One of the gnolls dropped something usable.

up11_Baldr140.jpg

Damn, these swords break like crazy today.

codex_m.jpg
Noooooooooooooo!

up11_Baldr139.jpg

Gnoll chieftain wasn't among that slaughtered mob. The Codex lures him and hides in shadows.

codex_m.jpg
I could so backstab him right now...

up11_Baldr141.jpg

codex_m.jpg
...but I prefer to prove that's unnecessary.

up11_Baldr142.jpg

codex_m.jpg
There! Dead!

Good job. Not a scratch, too.

up11_Baldr143.jpg

He's not a real boss and only drops one 2nd level spell and some gold - not even a magical weapon. Actually, to think of it, probably only Sarevok can be called 'a boss' in vanilla BG. Maybe Daveorn too.

up11_Baldr144.jpg

There are still some leftover gnolls here.

codex_m.jpg
Let's kill them so they don't feel omitted!

Right.

up11_Baldr145.jpg

Moving into backstab position. Notice the glitched Dynaheir to the right (I tried talking to her - no reaction, just stands there).

up11_Baldr146.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Only 19 damage? Lame. :decline:

up11_Baldr147.jpg

codex_m.jpg
Now that's more like it! :incline:

And the second one is down.

We move on.

Oh no...

Wait, let me look for an emote.

codex_m.jpg
Don't bother, I'm not fighting these.

up11_Baldr151.jpg

A nice hiding spot to wait out failing stealth.

Screw you, guys. You can stand here 'till you die of starvation.

up11_Baldr153.jpg

Reached this place right in time to 'recharge' hide in shadows again.

codex_m.jpg
Fuck. They're blocking the log-stairs and I have to get down there to fully explore the area.

Do You want me to bring out the emoticons?

codex_m.jpg
Yeah...

up11_Baldr155.jpg

;)

up11_Baldr157.jpg

We find nothing more remotely interesting here.

up11_Baldr159.jpg

codex_m.jpg
I'll be going now, guys. See you later. Or, on second thought, let's not!

Area completed - sort of. If someone knows how to non-magically (and non-cheatingly) reveal the rest of the map here, please let me know.

I only installed BG1, TotSC, BG2, ToB + official patches, and then tutu. That's all. I'm guessing that by BGT You mean Baldur's Gate Trilogy? I don't have that version.
The patch i was talking about is the last official bioware Throne of Bhaal patch, specifically, the one that says BETA (largest number) something in the bioware download page.

Nice, i imagine the Codex will soon develop a fondness for kobolds too.
Probably you are aware of it already, but if you haven't bought the archmagi cloak yet (or anything in the several thousand GP range you need), you get away cheaper if you buy and scribe/fire from scroll a friends spell and purchase after that.

I thought Tutu removed the XP cap but you imply that it is still there. But I guess I have no idea because I have never used Tutu.

I haven't written it clearly, sorry. No beta patch was installed, I applied only one official patch for both TotSC and ToB.

I tried that, actually. Charisma has raised from 9 to 15 after casting the spell, but the price of the robe didn't change. Maybe 15 Charisma isn't enough, or there's some glitch or other 'tweaking' going on.
The same thing with 20 reputation. It should give me 50% discount according to manual, but it's only 33% actually. And I'm pretty sure that in non-tutu the percentage was right.

I didn't read whole tutu readme and just assumed the cap is still there. If it proves to be otherwise, we're in for a pleasant surprise. :smug:

It could be tied to reaction roll, and if CHA is anything like the other stats, it doesn't give you squat between 9-15. You could grab Algernon's cloak and see if that helps with the additional +2 CHA.

Or it could be that only initial reaction roll counts and it's remembered for the rest of the game. I guess we'll see after I get the cloak.

Sorry, cap is still there. As a F/M/T you don't have too many level-ups left.

EDIT: Wooo! New page.
