Let me tell you, I am not a big a fan of demon knights at all.
Update #73: Machinae Supremacy, part I - Mostly Harmless
I bet it won't be wonderland on the other side of this.
They're fighting each other! And I haven't brought any popcorn!
Whoa! Is Michael Bay directing this?
Awww. And it was just getting good.
Who the fuck is this guy?
With that attitude of yours, Carston, I can tell we are going to become very good friends...
Ten years, huh? It must smell like shit in there.
He's like an ultimate Pokemon otaku.
Yeah, I agree that talking to you is not very interesting.
Uh... Hi there?
Is that all you have, boys?
Let me show you things here will look from now on.
Got it?
Do I really care about his apprentices?
They might know how to free him from the casing.
I don't think I want to talk to Carston any more.
I honestly have no idea when The Codex has regained his original gender, as I was even planning to make a special update involving casting spells in the wild magic zone to hopefully revert him to, uh, 'normal'. I guess this saves us some time.
All these look good enough, except maybe number of attacks, but it is too late to go dual-wielding Crom Faeyr and Celestial Fury now, we have invested too much into two-handed weapons.
We will of course still abuse Crom Faeyr in the right moments, when we finally craft it.
Right now the belt of +strength is more useful, though.
Does anyone know if the Magic Resistance bug is visual only, or if it does affect our actual magic resistance?
We have surpassed 2000 kills!
We also have an inventory clutter problem, which needs to be solved asap.
Shadows! This place must have a connection to the Glittering Plane.
And this covers the obscure book reference for this update.
Well.. That's... A lot of shadows.
Alright, just one more obscure book reference: we could certainly use a shadowmaster right now...
Death Count: 321
Load.
That was extremely painful and unpleasant and I hope you die a similarly horrible death.
Maybe I will... but only once.
However, shadows should not be a real challenge for us, especially if The Codex wears some actual armour.
Are you sure this armor will be enough?
Like I said. It should be.
It's fine. It's fine. I got this...
Doing good here. There's nothing to be afraid.
Ok, almost there...
Alright! I am the fucking best!
Let me guess. The machine?
It definitely looks like it.
But first we need to deal with the inventory problem.
And next time we will confront them about that journal we found on the third level. Yes, I am sure I will remember about that...
Yes, I'd like that!
And this replaces both Armor of the Hart and Red Dragon Scale, although we will keep the latter for maximum fire immunity (when combined with the two rings).
But these gloves do nothing...
Not YET.
Aaah. Now I like them!
Oh, did I overlook you when I was here before? Let me fix that.
Ok.
Orogs! That's... very disappointing, actually.
At least they explode into chunks, which is always nice.
Holy shit!
WTF are these damage numbers?
Killed by furniture. And yes, I know mimics only pretend to be chests, but still.
Death Count: 322
Load game.
How can we deal with a damage ouput like that?
Resistances.
Also, do not come any closer, to not trigger any more of them.
We are still taking 6 damage from every hit, but I was too lazy to search for the Red Dragon Scale in the bag of holding.
You fucker.
Also, we are shooting fire arrows, because we have over 400 hundred of them and ran out of storage space for new arrows, so I guess we can spare some.
Yeah! Go to hell, dumpster!
The next one does not seem to shoot fire...
Run away!
A retreat combined with some quick drinking saves our hero from death. We also find a chest that turns out not to be a mimic.
Back to mimics - this one was shooting poison (Ring of Gaxx gives immunity to that).
What about the other two?
We have no acid protection that I remember, so you will have to try and kill them faster than they kill you.
Great.
Die, die, die, die, die!
YES! YES! YES!
The worst part? None of the mimics dropped (contained?) anything noteworthy.
Let's move to some other room.
At least I can't complain about opponent diversity on this level.
STAY STILL!
Note to self: don't run after fleeing enemies, you have a bow.
Watch out, his friends are out for revenge.
Cute.
I remember slaughtering these things back in Update #5. I don't think they've gotten anys tronger since then.
This looks easy enough that spells should not be needed, so I will just wear heavy armor, to make the slaughter faster.
Spells are not needed. Weren't you listening?
Exploding snakes! Now with 50% extra gibs!
I smell a puzzle.
That might be burned torch oil.
I smell a torch-lighting puzzle.
Let's try this door now.
We have lost a couple of sreenshots here, but the incoming wave of yuan-tis was slaughtered by Skull of Death's in-built death spell.
And now it's trolls. Well, I guess the existence of the summonning machine can justify anything.
I could probably get rid of this flail now that I have a fuckton of other fire-imbued weapons, but I like it so much!
HA!
For fuck's sake.
Why does every container here have some kind of magical ammo inside?
Troll hunting time!
Great excuse to post this again:
Watch it, bros. I cannot guarantee you will like it as much as I do, but it is unique enough to be worth your time.
Trolls got nothing on me!
Except maybe hitting hard and often and overwhelming me with superior numbers...
Luckily, I know a chokepoint or two from my devil-fighting days.
Finishing trolls off is such a pain in the ass.
Still better than a pain in the gut when they rip out my intestines, though.
I love to be on the other side of jump scares.
There, there, no getting up.
Where do spectral trolls even come from... Or wait, I don't really want to know.
Yet another door.
Remember, regardless of how many doors you have, Sauron has MORDOR.
As the good book says, magical golems are dealt with through the use of non-magical weapons.
We have ours, but in case we have not brought any, there was an entire stash of them outside. decline
This thing is rather pathetic.
I guess they are only a challenge for the illiterate.
Not this time!
A chess piece?
Oh, okay.
Not fooling me!
We cannot ccess any more rooms here at the moment. As the spoiler-tooltip says, we are now moving into illithid encampment.
Well, it's a corridor.
I could just come closer and fuck their shit up, but I prefer if they come to me.
I probably should have kept my heavy armor on, though.
Yup, definitely.
Thst's much better!
Level up!
We can now switch to backstabbing with Fire Tooth instead of Sword of the Mask.
More crits never hurt... Me. Never hurt me. They might hurt someone else, though.
Another bug!
I never realized the work in QA was so intense.
This is more bugs than in a Bethesda* game!
*Insert Obsidian or Creative Assembly, if you prefer.
I guess we can call this a fan-patch.
Lookey-lookey.
Oh, I get these now! They must be some kind of a manual for the machine.
Nuh-uh, maybe next time.
I don't want to carry a dead body around.
I think he is still alive.
I am pretty sure he will be dead after we finish talking.
See? He already talks about dying in peace.
And by 'forbidden knowledge' you probably mean 'phat lewt'.
I find a liiiiittle hard to believe they were able to get through the previous levels.
I wish I had seen all that, sounds fun.
Aha! So there is a way!
But these tunnels look like they were built by the illithid in the first place... I don't get it.
tl;dr: There is a way to free Carston from his glass prison, and we need to do that in order to gain access to the machine, which will open the way to the next level.
Aaaand, he's dead. I knew it!
Which means I get to take his stuff... Wow, is that a magic missile wand? Haven't seen one of these in a while.
Time for more Codex Pest Control Services!
We're the best around these parts. Or any parts, really.
And don't worry about paying the bill, I will just take what I want.
I'm sure they did not do it only to make my life harder. That would be silly, right? RIGHT?
Almost walked into this one.
Give me the other part of that fucking rod and I'll let you live.
Ok, I lied.
But thanks for bringing it anyway.
There.
Tsk, tsk.
Well, that's just nasty.
This must be the kitchen.
They locked the refrigerator? What is this place, an illithid college dormitory?
I don't even want to know what they're cooking here...
...but I guess it must be pretty hot.
Oops, I think I broke the fridge.
Wha-? Vampiric illithids? WTF?
Bro, do you even sparkle?
We try to follow the gaseous form to some kind of a coffin to maybe stake the corpse for bonus XP, but it just despawns after a while.
Area completed!
Next time: We shall engage in a lot of melee combat, finally using some of our more exotic weapons to achieve tactical advantage (and lulz).
Well, it kinda does get turned into something weird once our heroes leave the Northern Empire behind, but oh well. By the way, if you're fan of the author, does the name Shinsan ring a bell?
No, I have only read The Black Company by him (actually, still reading - halfway through the last book now). I will probably be seeking out more when I deal with my backlog.
