Yes please, travel there and find an answer to this mystary. If it's "pixels", slay them all with extreme prejudice - all blocky shapes must have their corners rounded off or die. If it's "pixies" instead, engage in tasteful conversation, exploration and general inter-species bonding. You have your orders, Mouse Guard. :salute:

Part III: Of pixels and bogs obscura

So here is our brave Julian, ready to march against the forces of evil. But can you spot what's wrong with this picture?

Indeed, my observant reader, the numbers do not match those of the previous update. You see, after many unsuccessful attempts to unravel the mystery behind the Bird Totem, I have succumbed to temptation of using google  There I learned that in order to use said totem, one must set his emulated environment to have exactly 512K of chip memory and no other additional memory whatsoever. As you have already guessed, that was not my case. Changing configuration on the fly didn't help, nor was I able to use the in-game save. That's why I had to start a new game and repeat our voyage to the Vermillion Manor.

So, what does this totem do, you say? Oh, you'll see!

But for now, let's visit Marheim.

We go south, past the graveyard.

    Enjoying the countryside.

Sounds dangerous. It would be wise to avoid that place for a while.

At long last, the glorious city of Marheim! I can hear the sailors swearing already!

...eh, actually no, it doesn't look like a port city at all :M

I wonder if this has something to do with the witch.

    :hmmm:

I gave him more gold to see if he will say something else. He didn't. But our kindness went up!

    This door requires white key.

And this one requires gold key.

Spending two keys just to confirm the absence of princess is kinda disappointing.
    :rpgcodex:

There are other structures in the city, but they all are locked and require grey keys.

In one of the buildings there is a cleric who provides healing and gives a few tips.

    :what:

    :incline:

Well, that was rather uneventful. After a quick nap we are ready to go back home.

Hey, visiting a graveyard at night sound like a good idea.

    So, empty crypt?

    :hmmm:

    Back to Tambry.

Now we are ready to investigate the mystery of the Pixel Grove. I'll go south from Tambry, then turn west, visit those two unnamed rectangles and from there I'll go along the swamp's southern edge.

This confirms our empirical data :obviously:

So the unnamed rectangles are taverns.

    Old news.

Our bravery is triple-digit now :smug:

This moorland is crawling with all sorts of enemies.

The purpose of this ring will probably be revealed in the next update.
Meanwhile I've consulted the map and it seems that the grove we seek lies north.

    Movement is slowed.

    Pixle, eh?

    :hmmm:

This mysterious Pixel Grove sure is mysterious. Someone probably got here first and took all the pixels...

Well, let's go deeper into the bog then, who knows what's hidden there.

Traveling like that is a bit confusing. Maybe there is something that can aid us in our quest? Perhaps, something magical? Some sort of totem? If only we had something like this...

So that's what Bird Totem does, it shows the map of the current area. Here you can see the Pixel Grove in the top left, Stone Ring in the bottom left and a suspicious looking house right in the middle of the bog. Let's go check it out.

    :yeah:

Uh-oh, we're kinda low on vitality. I think it's a good idea to visit cleric we met earlier.

Archers are a pain to deal with, so I'm running away.

Archers are lagging behind giving me an opportunity to deal with swordsman.

    I'm waltzing around this one.

    :smug:

And this one dies from my arrow.

I still have some time before the midnight, so I head to Marheim.

[IMG] HE has usurped my place as lord of undead. Bring me bones of the ancient king and I'll help you destroy him, Dark One.

    :salute:

We must rest before venturing forth.

We are once again near the center of the map, in the village of Tambry. Now what?

    Heh, "pixle".

Proceed to Hemsath's Tomb and check out the Lake of Dreams please, they are close by and sound interesting.

It would be fun if running away from battles reduced your bravery :)

Yeah, I sure do. By the time I got to that bog-house he was shaking already and was really close to dying.
Those locations better have something to do or else.

I remember having some fun with this game. The Amiga version had excellent graphics and it's one of the few games where I really enjoyed the music. The C64 version apparantly was horribly bad.
I found a good strategy in the beginning to be to lure enemies towards the graveyard, and shoot them through the fence. Even Julian was very weak at the start, but after killing some enemies this way he was virtually invincible. So the game wasn't very balanced.

I never did finish the game since I apparantly collected the gold statues in the wrong order.

I agree, music is lovely, just needs a bit more variety.

Fence is not an obstacle for melee weapons too.

    Shhh, no spoilers please.

    Part IV: :2/5:

Once again we see Julian, standing in the middle of Tambry, ready to venture into the wilderness and face numerous dangers. Today our plan is to disturb the dead while raiding the tomb of Hemsath!
    :yeah:

[IMG] Why do you do this to me?..

Here is the entrance to the tomb.

    Let the raiding begin!

We walk down the long corridor.

    Really long corridor.

    Extremely long corridor.

Corridor leads us into a maze. The key to solving this maze is, uhm, well, keys. Gold and Red ones. The maze is not too complex, but it requires a lot of keys.

    Crystal Orb reveals hidden doors.

Here I just walked through a wall.

    :hmmm:

So after randomly wandering through a maze Julian came to a large room.

[IMG] Oh man! It's a bone, fuck yeah, incline!.. It's a bone... It's a fucking bone... I'm so hungry and tired...

We plunge back into a maze.

Unfortunately, we ran out of Gold keys, so we can't explore this maze fully. But enemies here drop those keys fairly often, so... Grindan time!

[IMG] Tame the golden beast and no mountain may deny you! But what rope could hold such a creature?
    [IMG] Updated my journal.

At this point Julian is shaking and losing HPs from starvation, he very well may not make it out alive. What a miserable end...

Still, curiosity gets the better of him and off into the maze we go.

Well now, this looks like a proper treasure :incline:
    Time to gtfo.

We even have some keys left. But HPs are dangerously low.

Huh, HPs are going up while Julian lies on the floor... Did I just abuse resting?

Ahh, it's good to see the sunlight again! Julian still needs something to eat though. To the tavern we go:

Now, isn't it convenient that the Lake of Dreams is just a little to the north from here?

Here is the Lake of Dreams.

Well, there is nothing that immediately catches my attention, so let's just travel along the coast.

    :hmmm:

    :what:

    :yeah:

I'm going to that small island in the middle of the lake.

    Aaand it's empty.
    :decline:

    Let's go back to Tambry.

Oh, by the way. That bone we found in the tomb is actually a bone of an ancient king. Let's deliver it to the Wraith Lord.

It's to early and Wraith Lord doesn't accept visitors, so we'll go to Marheim first.

    91 HPs? :incline:

It's still early but we don't have anything else to do.

    So we'll just wait.

    Fucking finally.

[IMG] As promised, here is the bones.
[IMG] Good! That spirit now rests quietly in my halls. Take this crystal shard.

I also gave him some gold, just for lulz. And what do you know...

    :salute:

It was a long day, Julian needs some rest.

New dawn brings new challenges. This time Julian will try to reach the Isle of Sorcery.

First we go to the tower north of Tambry.

From there we make our way through the thick forest.

And then go east, to the stone ring.

Watch closely now as I try to tap into the power of ancient magicks. First we face north and then use one of our Blue Stones.

[IMG] I feel the warp overtaking me!

Yup, we've been teleported to the Isle of Sorcery. According to the map, there is something in the western part of the island, let's go there.

Speaking to Sorceress increases ones luck, it seems.

    Up to 65 that is.

That's where we will leave Julian for now, inside the Crystal Palace, on the Isle of Sorcery. And who knows where his quest will take him next?

Wow, an update in which something actually happens! :)

Am I failing a PER check or food can only be eaten in taverns and there is no way to take food supplies with you? Julian is on one hell of a diet, starving near to death, eating a single meal and then repeating (the famous Black Cat diet?)...

Let's check out Watchtower, Seahold and the three unnamed tower thingies in the vicinity... (one directly under Marheim, one further west on the road, and one directly under Tambry but much further south).

    Bad trip report #5: Turtlespotting

After a short stay at Crystal Palace, we are ready to travel back to the mainland.

To go back we must face south and use one of our blue stones.

[IMG] Look, there's two women fucking a polar bear!

    From here we just--

    :hmmm:

Well, apparently stone rings don't work the way I expected, and we landed in the mountains south of Marheim. Guess I'll use this opportunity to explore nearby places of interest. That building surrounded by mountains looks like a good place to start.

    A-ha, a mountain pass.

    [IMG] Come at me bro!

    :smug:

    Another mysterious artifact.

    Dream Knight respawns!

Let's see what else this area is hiding from us.

    This cabin is empty.

    :hmmm:

    An empty castle, how fascinating.

Let's try our luck with a stone ring again, shall we?

    :what:

We've traveled far to the west and I don't like the idea of going home on foot so...

    Much better.

We've stumbled upon a keep on our way home.

But there was nothing of interest there.

Yay, we've managed to reach Tambry after all. Now we can proceed with CappenVarra's route.

To spice things up a little I've decided to get on a raft.

But that didn't take us far.

The first tower turned out to be an old castle. An empty old castle.

While visiting Marheim we've spent some keys unlocking various doors...

Apples! Now we can stock up on food!

    :yeah:

    Eh, not really.

    :rage:

But let's not allow rage and hunger to distract us from our journey.

Yet another old castle. This one is not empty though.

    Not too exciting.

[IMG] Sun, you say? You know, I have this Sun Stone, maybe... Wait, ogres are coming, I'll talk to you later.

Unfortunately, in the heat of battle, Julian mortally wounded the old man!

[IMG] Only the light... *cough*... of the Sun... *cough*...

Hmm, so you can kill NPCs in this game. I wonder if this will work on king...
    :M

    Another old castle, another disappointment.

    Well done, CappenVarra, well done.

Let's see if Watchtower is any different from these castles.

    :hmmm:

    Looks empty.

But repeatedly tapping "Take" yields something.

Using this Sea Shell doesn't seem to do anything...

    Wait, something is happening!

[IMG] Just hop on my back if you need a ride somewhere.
[IMG] Damn, those were no ordinary apples...

    :yeah:

We are now going to visit Seahold.

Fun fact: pressing attack button while riding the turtle increases ones bravery.

You know, I am still feeling bad about what happened to that old man.

Maybe donating some gold to this turtle will improve Julian's karma?

    It does :incline:

    [IMG] :takemyjewgold:
[IMG] Why, thank you, young sir!

    Behold, a Seahold at last.

    Not again...

    Oh.

    Only two to go.

I've checked the map and that Swan Isle thingie got my attention. It has no stone ring, so it can only be reached by using turtle. This has to be significant, right? But traveling such a long distance by sea is kinda boring. That's why we're going to use the stone ring we saw earlier today.

[IMG] Something stirs inside Julian... a presence, a hunger. It is bound, angry... and it cannot escape...

Alas, we came to this stone ring only to find that we have no blue stones left.

    :rage:

But don't let this sadden you because we can go elsewhere. Let' go to Grimwood and confront the Witch I say! But, as usual, we'll visit Marheim and Tambry first.

    [IMG] Updated my journal.

    :decline:

    We're all set.

    Shit just got real.

A dead end. We'll have to find another entrance to the forest.

    And find we did.

    :hmmm:

A quicksand or a swamp or whatever this is sucks Julian down into a cave!

After what seemed like an eternity of aimless wandering, we came here:

Don't tell me it's a dead end again! No, there have to be a cave somewhere here, I can tell from some of the pixels.

    Yup, here it s.

    Getting closer.

    :what:

[IMG] The Sunstone has made the witch vulnerable!

[IMG] The Sunstone has made the witch vulnerable!
[IMG] The Sunstone has made the witch vulnerable!

Missed this message and kept using the Sun Stone

    :smug:

[IMG] As you touch the Golden Lasso, a strange, tingling sensation arises in the back of your mind... a memory, beginning to surface... "Tame the golden beast and no mountain may deny you! But what rope could hold such a creature?" As you try to flesh out the memory, it fades......and you can remember nothing more.

And that's where it ends for today. What will be our next destination?

While you are coming up with an answer I'll try to gtfo of this maze.

Oookay. I think I will back away slowly...

I am well known for exceeding expectations :smug:

And you really should title your updates using quotes from the game, it will be great! This whole story arc so far can be called Act 1: Julian was getting very hungry. There, I have done my part for today. Proceed to wander aimlessly and valiantly ride turtles where no swans had sung before! :salute:
