I think I've got this by the ass now. It seems that there's some countdown on how long you've been at peace, and the stability of the Lesser Partner also influences things. Now I just want this old bastard to die in this most fortuitious time so I can finish off Venice and take back the Imperial crown (and claim Bohemia in the process).

Beware multikult. Having lots of different cultures and religions can really fuck you up the ass every now and then. Humanist Tolerance is definitely a good investment, even if the Pope will get a bit butthurt. It even speeds up the coring process. It's obligatory for any nation that wants to conquer some far eastern territory for delicious spice.

A short update about some internal developments. I've been busy. Nothing to do tomorrow so i should get some more conquest done.

Kurland. A solid fortress of Protestantism amidst an ocean of urine and heresy. Essentially ruled as an aristocratic dictatorship with a strong emphasis on religion.

For his next conquest, the Hochmeister looks to Prussia. He decides this would not be a prudent course of action after examining the web of alliances in the Holy Roman Empire. They are still a target, however.

Agitators and heretics from Lithuania stir up trouble in Samogitia. Most of them are quickly purged, discouraging further efforts, but this hardly looks good on the international stage.

With the Order growing ever more secular and centralised, with the Church being brought under state control, and with Kurlandic patriotism still humming throughout the land, the Hochmeister takes a gamble. Gathering his many staunchly loyal supporters, he has them elect him as God's anointed. Opposition, particularly Catholic opposition, is quickly and ruthlessly stamped out. The Hochmeister adopts his legitimated titles of the Duke of Livonia, the Earl of Estland, the Duke of Kurland, and the Prince of Danzig, while distributing many other lesser titles to his close supporters. He also proclaimed himself as the King of Kurlandy, but this title is not yet recognized by the international community. The nation was practically not that much different. This was a formal despotism. It was more obvious, and thus the opposition was stronger. Riots and revolts took place, but they were all quickly and brutally suppressed. Another important move by the newly elected King was to limit the size of aristocratic private armies, imposing heavy fines on those who disobey. This was to bring the aristocracy under control, so even if they resisted they could be crushed.
One of the most unpopular moves was to abandon his oath of celibacy. it was rare for a Hochmeister to actually stick to this oath, but it was never broken openly. The Hochmeister took as his wife a beautiful young Saxon princess from the Principality of Brandenburg, reestablishing the alliance between the two nations. This, he justified to his supporters, was to consolidate and legitimize his position as monarch.

Drastic government centralization was undertaken. Yearly censuses, improved roadways and postal systems, and more complex bureaucracy was adopted. Every detail of the country was brought to Kurland, to be properly dealt with. This centralization, although unpopular, had many positive effects for all members of society. The serfs still got the worst of it though, as always.

More universal law was introduced, called the Codex Livonia. Among the laws, were guidelines to how estate owning aristocrats should treat their serfs. There was still much room for oppression, but overt and bizarre punishment and cruelty was forbidden.
One noble was to be administered an enormous fine. He had beaten many of his serfs for very negligible offenses. The final straw was when a child, for tripping over on front of his horse when the noble was inspecting his estates, was beaten to death. A chunk of the fine would be given to compensate the serf and his family, while the rest would go to the state. The noble openly resisted this punishment, as he was to be fined an enormous amount of money. He was executed and his family was threatened with disinheritance if they resisted further. This was a shockingly ruthless, no-nonsense approach. Disinheritance to a noble was far worse than death, because it also meant lasting shame, and the end of their family's fortune and noble lineage. The King wanted to show he wasn't messing about. Anyone who opposed the new order would be destroyed.

The King, a model of German virility and strength, was what one might call a love machine. Not too long after his marriage, the Queen gave birth to a healthy male child. The speed at which a legitimate heir was produced was seen as further proof that he had been given divine right to rule.

Despite the initial determined refusal of the conquered Russians, after years of occupation, assimilation, and conversion, the idea of being a conquered people faded away completely. The Prussians weren't that intolerant to other cultures. Historically religion took the place of nationalism before nationalism became rampant throughout the world. Life had normalized, and the inhabitants of Luki simply accepted their Prussian rulers.

This is worrying. The Portuguese have a vast colonial empire of trading ports and conquered eastern cities. If the Austrian Archduke came into possession of that territory, he would be the wealthiest man in Europe. Hopefully, if such a thing does come to pass, the Austrian lack of interest in naval matters will lead to the quick collapse of that colonial empire.

Another noble has been found abusing his serfs outside of the privileges granted in the Codex Livonia. The King quickly set about punishing the noble. He also resisted, so after a brief struggle he was captured, executed, and his family threatened with disinheritance if they resisted. Once again, the King displayed how casually he was willing to disregard his aristocracy's rights and privileges if they opposed him.

They didn't take it well. Many nobles gathered into coalitions to oppose the King.

The King, not one to back down from a fight, simply cracked down on their privileges further.

The aristocracy were forced to relent. With privileges being lost for every shred of resistance they offered, and the threat of disinheritance looming, the aristocracy could do nothing. They couldn't even fight, as the state army would easily crush them. They had wrought their own downfall, as the King began gathering more and more power for himself. The aristocracy still retained their military privileges. The strengthening of Kurlandic despotism meant that the Aristocracy shifted from land holding rulers by proxy, to a wealthy military upper class. The main negative consequence for this was that cavalry forces often had to be provided for by the state. Professionalization of the army was a good thing, but for a medium sized regional power it was ungodly expensive. The country at the moment is in shambles, as the new order is slowly accepted. The King's power was now absolute.

YES! Perhaps your Monarch should run a Space Empire later <3

Awright, I'm finally getting the hang of Denmark. It's around 1430 and I've vassalized half of the Teutonic order. Prussia just formed (impending butturt?)

A few more questions, if you don't mind

    1. Why don't my country names show up in nice big fonts over the country like yours?

    2. Sweden is SUPER-BUTTHURT about our personal union. Them and Denmark are still "in the family", but we're not "married". How do I annex/inherit them? Just keep waiting for my king to die? I need them so I can create Scandinavia. Then go injun-stompin.

    3. Anything I can do to get a decent master of the mint besides hoarding cultural tradition?

Hey bro. You convinced me to leave Civ Uni, The Dark Years and Rising Nations Mods.

    Don't break my heart dude.

Oh, for me at least I get the same map without a mod beyond 4.1 and MMU.

edit- Oh god, I have built CVNs as Romania in HOI2 faster than Carracks as Sweden. Jeez build times are stupid long in MM. *goes back to his game*

Gott in Himmel. Woke up early today. I'll try to get some playing done, have a nap. and hopefully do a large update tonight. I'll include a world map in the update.

I installed it as thus; I installed EU3 complete, i installed HTTT, i patched it to the latest non beta via the autopatcher, i tracked down the beta patch that adds the names to the map, i installed MM Ultimate 1.21

Inheriting Sweden and Norway, then forming Scandinavia with the starting union is the height of popamole faggotry. Generally in PUs if the partner is bigger, wealthier or stronger than you they'll try to worm their way out as soon as possible. MM has some events dealing with Sweden and Denmark i think. I'll probably be doing Sweden or Denmark for my next LP when i finish this one.

Protip Gold, it is no longer wise nor prudent to spam Carracks as in vanilla. Generally the best thing to have is a fleet of a few big ships, with small ships or galleys providing cheaper bulk. Admirals and naval ideas are also a lot more important as quality counts over quantity. You don't have factories churning this shit out, that's why it takes a while.

I'm having a *lot* of fun with Denmark. Vassal'd half the Teutons, and snatched Lubeck. My infamy is crazy high, but I think I'll sit for a while and see what happens.

This really isn't too complex if you have the EU3 wiki.

I assume you're playing Vanilla, then. Magna Mundi is fun because everything has hidden effects, so it's a matter of risk:reward, choices and consequences, as well as the mystery of not knowing precisely how your decisions will turn out. The problem arises when the game only hints at you how to do something, so you are denied some event or decision because of a single arbitrary hidden requirement.

You don't need more than 40 relations (60 is where it seems to reset for PUs in MM if you have over 100), but what you do need is higher Gov tech and prestige. What I've seen to really help with this shit was when your partner's stability drops lower than yours. For me, Hungary converted to Protestantism and bam! Next fifteen years they were up for inheritance, which was what I needed.

Currently I'm cracking down on protestants, but trying to be a more secular catholic is making things hard. I wonder what it results in later on.

Why the fuck ain't I a Great Power? I've one of the largest territories in Europe, and an army worthy of Kurland.

Great point! I just slaughtered them all, blew culture points on an advisor to lower infamy, then used Reconquest to claim the final 5 provinces. Now I'm waiting for my treaty to run out so stockholm is MEIN.

i am pretty close to going Scandinavia in my Grand Campaign game (now on 1552 and i am getting ready for the 30 years war period, if it happens that is):

Norway and Denmark have been beaten in 5-6 successive wars now all the way from the War of Swedish Freedom in early 1400's, the trade dispute of Pommern and recently in the "Big Brawl of Tver", pitching Sweden, Poland, Holstein and Pommern against Denmark/Norway, Muscowy/Pskov, Lithuania and Riga, which ended like this:

Norway is a vassal and free from Denmark, Muscowy lost her Archangelsk area to me and Pskov was annex by me along with Riga (which i wanted to do for a long time, i was never really pleased having little Riga stuck like a little tick inside my kingdom).

Lithuania was forced to release smaller nations by Poland which are warring amongst themselves now atm.

it felt good man, but gave me alot of infamy, so now i have to spend some years lowering that again.

am kinda worried about the Timurids though, they have been making progress through the old Horde lands and into India.

the game has been totally randomized by all the addons, makes it even more fun.

I think you need the highest possible title to be a great power. I became one after i got the event that crowned my Khan as Khagan in the Mongol LP. The requirements are also very high, as great power represents being a global or at least continental superpower. Preparing update as we speak

Ah, fair Kurlandy, a harsh, yet loving motherland to the Prussian fatherland. Savaged by internal instability. Lithuania, like a vulture, sees this as an opportunity to violate fair mother Kurland and snatch Samogitia from her, like a child being snatched from a woman's arms. Sweden and Denmark join in on this disgusting parade of arrogance and deplorable military overconfidence. By God, even if every subject of Kurland must die, no matter how many crops must be burnt, no matter how much blood spilled, the motherland must be protected. For the King, this has the side effect of drawing the attention of the nation away from the new Absolutism. Rage filled patriotic chants fill the streets of the Kingdom and the minds of the people. Once again, everyone in the nation feels they have purpose.

The early part of the war remained bizarrely silent. Small forces of Lithuanians skirmished across the border, no match for the Kurland soldiers. After a couple of years of low intensity fighting, the Lithuanians gather all their manpower and assault, while the Swedes attack Neva.

A huge force of Lithuanians and her Wallachian allies attacks Samogitia. The force greatly outnumbers the Kurlandy army, but the general, according to an Ingrian spy, fell off his horse while inspecting his troops, breaking his neck. Taking this as an omen from God, the King immediately moved to attack, confident

A Lithuanian Catholic monk who witnessed the Battle of Samogitia would remark that "it was the most glorious and disgusting battle ever witnessed by Heaven and Earth"
It began promisingly enough for both sides. The Kurlandy artillery regiment had slowed the marching speed of the army through the Livonian forests to a crawl. The original plan was to march atop hilly ground nearby Samogitia, lure the Lithuanians out, then sweep them from the field like a great boulder of steel and gunpowder. Instead, the King had to settle with a pitched field battle, where the Lithuanians could use their numerical advantage to the utmost.

It began promisingly enough for them. Marching under light fire from artillery, the Lithuanian infantry marched into firing range with the Kurlandy charge infantry. Suffering heavy losses, the newly promoted Lithuanian commander planned to exhaust the Kurlandy infantry, thin them out, then crack their formation from the front with his hussars.

He underestimated the prowess of the Prussians and Latvians. The Russians and Ingrians did not think themselves Kurlandic, but the Prussians and Latvians had every stake in the fate of Kurland. They would fight to the death for their motherland, through pain and hardship. The skill, discipline, fine formation, and supporting fire of the artillery slaughtered the poorly organized and drilled conscripts of the Lithuanian army. Seeing that an infantry rout was possible, the Lithuanian commander sent his cavalry in to support the infantry, as well as to cut off their line of retreat. At this point, with the entire army lined up against his infantry, the King ordered a charge, supported by the cuirassiers from the left flank. The hussars with their minds full of blood, foolishly met the charge. They had no hope against the large and mighty men of Kurland in any sort of close engagement. The Lithuanian army was completely smashed, and the cuirassiers chased them off the field.

After several days of forced marching to escape the Kurlandy army, the Lithuanians were caught. Their slaughter was complete, the few survivors were taken as prisoners of war.

Livonia protects her dear children by scorning those who harm them. Ruined by the attrition, the Lithuanians flee back to their capital to reinforce.

A huge force of knights and hussars crosses into Samogitia. The commander, clearly a military traditionalist, attempts to break the Kurlandic line with a furious charge of over 8000 assorted hussars and knights. Their charge collapses from the weight of fire. The infantry countercharges, sweeping men clean off their horses with the mighty Kurland halberd. The cuirassiers charge in around the flank, encircling them. Over 8000 Lithuanian hussars lie dead. The most miraculous and strange aspect of this battle, is that not a single Kurlandic soldier is recorded as seriously wounded, missing, or dead.

Disgustingly, Luki is occupied. Abandoning the artillery to the garrison in Riga, the brave men of Kurland march as fast as their legs will take them to avenge this blow to Kurlandic pride, to reunite the motherland with her child.

The Lithuanian scum fall like wheat to a scythe before the onslaught of Prussian guns and Kurlandic might. Luki is retaken, and every soldier of the Lithuanian garrison is put to the sword.

Osel is besieged by the pox riddled Wallachians. The King is forced to rely on the valiance of the Latvian defenders, and the strength of the island fortress. A local merchant and philosopher called Benedikt finds himself as the leader of the defenders in Osel. Stirring hearts with oration about Protestant humanism, patriotism, and the pride of the motherland, he gives heart to the defenders. They dare not give way, while the dead soldiers of Kurland look down upon them.

Neva is taken. Filled with patriotic fury, the soldiers march as gods, contemptuous of exhaustion and pain. Upon Ingermanland, much Swedish blood is shed. Brimming with the fire of hate, the Kurlandy formations shrug off the Swedish shot as though it was a mild source of irritation. After a furious charge, the Swedish cowards are sent flying back towards Finland.

Under cover of the Ingrian forests, the Kurlandic army marches in front of the Swedes. Upon reaching Neva, the Swedish and Dane reinforcements there are quickly put to rout. Lying in wait, the King sets a trap for the Swedes. Already demoralized, the sight of their pursuers materializing seemingly out of nowhere in front of them is too much. The Swedish army is put to rout, the few survivors scattering into Russia.

Another Swedish army, dropped off by boat, attacks Neva. They are beaten back into Finland. Confident that the Swedes have been bloodied sufficiently, the King marches the army down to Lithuania, to seize their capital and get favourable peace terms.

Tragically, the King is afflicted with a grave illness on the march. With his last vigour, he reassures the troops of their duty. With his last breath, he names his finest general, Friedrich Kleist, as regent. When he is done ensuring the future of his nation, he dies on the spot. He died standing, as a brave soldier should.

Showing that he is no lesser man than the late King, he immediately pushes out another Swedish force from Neva, before marching south.

Norway subsidizes the war effort. A friendly gesture, but unnecessary. At least Kurland knows who its friends are. Meanwhile, Friedrich decides to split up the army into two forces now that the main Swedish and Lithuanian forces are vanquished. His army would be a heavy hitting force, complete with artillery, to keep the Swedes out on the north front. The other army, commanded by a Prussian aristocrat with the prestigious surname of Lysander, will be more mobile. The second army's purpose will be to crush any small irritating Lithuanian raiding parties. After the Lithuanian's remaining army has been routed, then Lithuania itself can be attacked.

The war is very bloody and very high intensity. There is no shortage of recruits, but organizing them properly into regiments is becoming more difficult and complex. Nevertheless, it speaks for the military prowess of the Kurlandic people, that the internal situation of Kurland has actually improved since the war started. Now the country is more stable, as the war provides a focus for the nation. When Lithuania attacked, the people quickly forgot about the new absolutism. Brilliant propaganda campaigns were worked out by the sinisterly intellectual court Jews. While Kurland is at war, there are no Prussians, Latvians, Russians, Ingrians, Protestants or Catholics, there are only Kurlandics, loyal to their King, and loyal to their motherland.

For Lithuania this war has been one long string of horrible and bloody defeats. Amazingly they still cling to some delusional hope of victory. Maybe they think that the Swedes will come through, maybe they think that reinforcement from the Danes will come, maybe they even think that Russia or the Holy Roman Empire will aid them. None of these things will come to pass. For peace to be achieved, Lithuania's back needed to be broken.

Lithuania is taken, after a long and bitter siege. A further defeat is inflicted on the Swedish army. It was time for peace. Lithuanian military might was now a joke throughout Europe, while Sweden has been humiliated. This was a good day for Kurland.

With no desire for illegitimate territorial gain, Friedrich desires instead the security of Kurland against Lithuania. Lithuania is forced to renounce all claims on Samogitia, while a huge monetary concession for damages caused by the war is to be payed. The money goes into all sorts of civic projects, including a Protestant mission to Neva and Ingermanland.

    Which quickly bares fruit.

Shortly after the war, Friedrich steps down from his position as regent. The new King, also called Friedrich ascends. He is an intellectual. With no time for politeness, and useless formalities, his youth was dedicated to intellectual and military pursuits.

Benedikt, the hero of Osel, is hired as an adviser of state and court philosopher. With the aid of Benedikt's knowledge of translated Greek texts and philosophy, as well as his experience with business, government reform is undertaken. Mostly concerning the economy, the new reforms have a very positive impact. Great amounts of wealth pour into the treasury.

Hmm, worrying. If the Habsburgs get their hands on the wealth of North Italy, they will easily be the foremost power in the Holy Roman Empire.

The wealth of Kurland was reliant on Danzig, and the wealth of Danzig was reliant on trade. This much was obvious. An experience businessman, with experience in naval trade, Benedikt urges the King to look to the seas as well as the land. To this end, Friedrich funds a new branch of the glorious Livonian Engineer Corps, the Kurlandic Marine Corps, dedicated to naval matters. It is a small organization, at the moment dedicated simply to improving merchant vessels and safeguarding Baltic trade. Most are doubtful about this new Corps, but even the mighty army of Livonia and Kurland was originally quite pathetic. The need for a fleet will soon be dire, that is obvious. Every great thing starts small, Kurland's naval tradition will doubtlessly be no exception.

Well, being a great power is supposed to represent one of the Imperial giants. The Ottoman Empire at its zenith, Absolutist France, the Spanish Empire, the Austrian Empire, those are great powers. There was hardly any great power during the early game in EU3's time period, just a bunch of strong but internally muddled large regional powers.

World map for this interested. I'm liking the Ottoman expansion, and the Mughal Empire has appeared around Pakistan and Iran. The Mongol steppe is a total clusterfuck, while absolutely nothing has happened in Japan.

The thing here is that it results in absolutely nonsensical titles.

Also, let me guess: You need to be protestant for Absolute Monarchy?
